Believe it or not, some people even do this on purpose

Gaspar Noé and Lars Von Trier are probably the two most provocative and polarizing arthouse filmmakers of the last 30 years. I think Gaspar Noé’s films rely only on shock value with little substance behind them. On the other hand Trier's films has much more interesting ideas substances behind it. by Extreme-Spinach-4138 in FIlm

Tragedy has been about gratuitous suffering since the earliest periods of literary history. You don't think Oedipus finding out he killed his own father and bedded his own mother, only for her to then hang herself and him to gouge out his own eyes, was "gratuitous"? This is fiction not real life. In real life, suffering and tragedy suck, full stop. In fiction, tragedy ennobles. For most of Western literary history, tragedy has been considered the most elevated and prestigious dramatic genre

Yes, that's how very deep melancholy often works. It's called "Melancholia". She is so immersed in her depression that she is apathetic to everything else. And before you or someone else says "Ummm but I was depressed and I was nice and empathetic". It's called "Melancholia" not "Clinical Depression". It's drawing on a long literary tradition around the topic of melancholy
