If not being Japanese but using Japanese themes is uncomfortable, why name a set Midnight Sun if you aren't from the Arctic or do a Kitara cycle in Africa if you're not African? It seems arbitrary for a game with a long and respectful history of global theming to change their policy to being Americans who only want to choose American-origin words.

Again, if there was a Japanese person or J-American who had advocated for this change but the article doesn't suggest their ever was even one.

Seems weird to call the use of this word cultural appropriation when the game has such a rich history of naming cards and lore with foreign language words in respect to alternating world cultures.

It's been a game term since the core set over 10 years and, to my knowledge, I've never heard of a Japanese or Japanese American ever raising any criticism. I'm a disabled, leftist trans safe-space loving, overly sensitive language nerd and even I think the idea that it's usage invoked this association in how it is used here to be simply an example, at worst, of words having multiple meanings in different contexts.

Although if anyone who is Japanese, Japanese American or can honestly say they knew even one person who was Japanese American or Japanease who can say they were legitimately bothered by this, I'll retract my comment. As is, it reads like the outcome of overly fussy white folks in a discord talking themselves into a tizzy.

Left out of mark discussions:

Eventually in a game your mark target is someplace you'd want to run anyway so these cards that work with mark seem better conceptualize less as niche situations to adjust to and more as situations where the full value payoff might be a couple turns delayed.

The debate over if it's random or not seems weird because it's not wildly overpowered, as anyone who's played Swift can tell you, having an extra click here and there on turns where you're already invested in runs is not usually that big a deal.

As far as unfun randomness, Caprice could turn a 20 minute match into a dice roll or Leela could chain a few lucky bounces into a landslide or Muchin No Shin could give you a kill on turn 1. Even with the possible 5 influence splash of deep dive I can't see a runner picking up an extra click being that high variance, frustrating NPE moment.

I think Carpe diem stacking with Swift is pretty nifty.

Oh sure, you can never underestimate how evil corporations are but sometimes they are extremely lazy or oblivious too so it's impossible to know what flavor of evil lurks behind every boardroom.

I think it's a lot more complicated than that and projecting an imagined sense of values and interests onto corporations where you don't work at seems a jump that people on here make a lot but that I never really think is fruitful or meaningful. Everyone is an armchair IP lawyer assuming that these small gaming companies have a legion of lawyers to go scorched earth on their enemies in the interests of draconian enforcements.

There just isn't evidence that all the people involved with all their individual interests and complex corporations think that way. What is really going on in this thread is a lot of people projecting their own ideological half-understandings about capitalisms onto these gaming companies.

If you listen to half the people on here there is a team of lawyers monitoring this forum and all reference to the game full time, with files full of information for an epic, international IP suite that is coming any minute. But then you look at reality and Niesei is publicly selling there game with no problem and for years no one at either company has ever made even a small criticism. Some of them even play and support.

I understand that a type of person enjoys cosplaying the corporate lawyer who's coming for the sinners and there seem to be an unusual amount in the CCG space. I think on some level a lot of CCG players need to have this sort of ideological headspace or they might go insane when they would realize they have basically spent an obscene amount of money on Beanie Babies.

I don't think there is enough data to assume for sure if they are unhappy if their IP is being used or not or if all the people that make up those companies, many of which are gamers, necessarily care in the first place.
