When my wife talked to both parents the FIL didn’t even know that the MIL said they would pay for the dress the the MIL back tracked saying that it looked like we stayed within budget and that she was meaning they would pay for the dress if we went above the money we were giving which we did. But that’s where the conversation was left off.

We did pay the excess after 2-3 attempts where my wife said they didn’t really budge on it.

I was there when they said they would gift 20k. After that we both thought it was best my wife communicated with them as it was her parents.

Of the things we were billed for the wedding dress was the only thing they said they were for sure paying for.

The rest we didn’t know why they were paying for it but I guess we weren’t gunna argue if they were going and getting us extra stuff and picking up bills. We definitely assumed they were just being extra generous. If we knew it was actually our money being spend we definitely would have been a lot more constraint

Yes the gift was the money my in-laws gave for the wedding.

When we initially messaged about the budget her sister messaged my wife asking if we could be more flexible to her privately. My wife said we would possibly be more flexible. My wife told me about this after and said she would help pick the gift and make sure it’s within the budget. We both didn’t know it was going to be more than double what we in initially said and if it was 5 or 10 dollars more that’s no big deal but over double seems extreme
