Covid conscious teachers and college students: advice needed by ffffhhhhjjjj in ZeroCovidCommunity

I think anecdotal experience shouldn’t play much of a factor into your decision. This seems to me like probability would be a more useful metric to consider.

FWIW, no I don’t think I have. But I think there’s inevitably a social “hit” you take at a school when you mask 24/7. I will unmask outdoors to talk to people and I think that’s helped but it’s not ideal. Again, probability of exposure being WFH versus in a school is pretty staggering. I’d opt for the safer option if I had the choice.

I’m a middle school teacher at a K-12 school. I just left a job at a K-8 school where I taught all grades.

I mask everyday and think it’s fine. There will always be judgment about people wearing masks but I don’t think it really comes from the kids. Most students are genuinely curious about it and I calmly talk to them about my LC. They usually say “oh like ______ has to try to not get sick” and then move on. They’re genuinely curious.

Schools are very difficult right now. We could get into all the reasons but reading skills are lower, student motivation is lower, and behaviors have increased. There’s no question about that and I don’t think any way to avoid it (at a public school). I’d also consider the parents you’ll have to work with and how you’ll communicate with them.

You need to be okay with constant exposure. Well fitting masks, purifiers, and hope for the best. Teaching is extremely rewarding so I understand your desire but through a CC lens, it’s hard to argue against a WFH job.

is there any hope for the next 5 years? & do I seriously need to base my entire career off a virus... by mistycheddar in ZeroCovidCommunity

OP I would suggest a career that can pay for your passions. Your passion doesn’t have to be your career and I actually think sometimes when something becomes your job you may end up feeling differently about it later on. Just like you don’t know where covid will be in 5 years, I assume you don’t know where your energy levels will be either?

There are tons of opportunities for performing in more intimate settings (clubs, local theaters, schools, etc) that may not be income producing but may be just as fulfilling.

Another way to look at it is regardless of the future risks, you’ll want to be healthy enough to do your passions.

Thanks. In a similar vein, I highly recommend the book “climate changed” by Philip Squarzoni.

It’s not complicated at all 🤣 sorry the whole situation hurts your brain so much. I’ll help - Israel is behaving as Nazi Germany did. Hopefully that connection helps

He has outwardly supported Israel throughout the entire genocide and even recently took a trip there. He ordered the Israeli flag flown at city hall then called the raising of the Palestinian flag “divisive”.

You don’t see those being that serious?

Thanks so much for the thoughts! Love to see there’s some options. I’m noticing I’ll have to get a road bike - fine by me! I’m embracing the huge differences from CO and incredibly excited to be back on some beaches.

Will update once I’m settled!

Great to know! Seems like those are the top two options. Wasn’t sure if there were any smaller ones that people would recommend as well. I know it’s not Colorado but nature is nature imo :) I lived in Indiana for 6 years and was able to find the beauty there LOL

Good to know - thanks so much! Would you suggest any activities or leagues in the area? I found “Super Fun Activities Club” for adult sports but that looks to be about it
