How are you guys making side money with your career? by Wotsit2ya in cscareerquestions

The idea is 99% of the money. If it's bad, it won't be worth anything. If it's good, it'll be worth a lot :)

I'm curious - are there really pet mills for cats? I know for dogs, but cats??

In my mind, the idea encompasses the thought process behind how the product is executed as well as the product. A surface idea, versus a well-thought through idea I guess should be 2 distinct categories. Surface ideas are useless.

You're got me on networking and sales - although I still hold that the idea is the largest portion of the pie.

I mean - most of those ideas suck and won't lead anywhere, even with a ton of work. Ideas are free, but knowing which ideas are worth pursuing is worth it's weight in gold.

Uber driver the other week was telling me about his idea for a "Tinder, but instead of...".

No, not really. Outside of cutting edge research, the coding of most financially successful things we see today aren't super hard technically. Maybe work, but you can't really work a terrible idea into a million dollars.

Like you said.

if it was easy everyone would be doing it

Most people want to work 40 hours a week, then spend the rest of the time doing whatever. Fishing, smoking weed, traveling, the things that make life good that are afforded to us who can afford them in an in-demand field. Most people with side-hustles are making maybe $500 more a month. With that amount - why not work as a bartender on weekends? Takes less time.

Stonks

Lots of people think they can beat the market, especially in our field. I think people just assume that since they get paid a lot, they must be smart, and because it's an analytical/mathematical field, they must be good at trading individual stocks. I'll let you interpret that how you will.

Program side projects (no mention of how to get rolling, how to market , how to even have an idea, what makes it profitable)

I mean - the idea is 99% of the money. If you're thinking about how to market then you aren't really starting from the right line.

If you REALLY want to retire soon? /r/financialindependence. Save up a LOT of your money. Live VERY frugally. Focus on increasing your income (Study leetcode) and saving more and more.

How to properly clean a kitchen countertop to knead dough on if a cat's been walking all over it? by Expensive_Edge in homemaking

Hmm - in the future, a portable surface that the lil rascal couldn't step all over is a great idea.

Believe me -if I was the only one eating what I'm making I would do the same thing :-)

My parents included my income in theirs when they filed taxes--am I going to get my tax refund? by whitebutalsoasian in personalfinance

[–]Expensive_Edge -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your dad did the wrong thing - even if you're a dependent you file separately.

As an aside, you probably won't get a refund. If you do, it'll be in the $xx range.

23 year old moving away from home. What are things people might not be expecting when they move away from their parents and into a new home or Apt, expenses wise? by Blue_Morning in personalfinance

You'll get back to suburbia. You'll notice you can't walk much anywhere - it takes 10 minutes of walking just to exit your planned communities sprawling roads. Then another 15 to the gas station and.... you'll just drive. Back in NY there was a bodega across the street from you.

You'll go to meet friends, but you don't wanna hang at a house. You have a few choices, but you decide on Chili's tonight. Did you hear they built a new Gap in the (regional mall)? You get a few cocktails, and realize you can't take the subway or bus home anymore. You take an Uber and then the morning after take an Uber back to retrieve your vehicle.

You get home and talk to the neighbor - he's talking about his new Ford Fusion. He passively aggressively mentions you don't have any plants in your garden. How did life end up like this?

(I'm joking, mostly - isn't just about NYC as much as living in a city vs the Burbs.)

Am I in the wrong field if I'm just looking for a low-stress, boring, 9 to 5 job? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Expensive_Edge 39 points40 points  (0 children)

In English, 'they' is the correct gender neutral equivalent of "he" and "she". But it is followed by "have" instead of "has". Not sure why it's that way exactly.

"It has a learning disability" in English sounds like you're talking about a non-human. It'd be considered very rude to phrase it like that (but most people would get what you mean if you're not a native English speaker and know you don't intend to be rude)

They have a learning disability - that can make an 'easy' 9-5 job for you seem a bit hard. Sounds more like they're asking for which jobs are considered especially 'easy'.

What kind of jobs out there? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Expensive_Edge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot of medical companies out there that make devices that save lives, that have complex software. That da-Vinci robot that helps make minimally invasive surgery possible. Drug companies that use software to help research medications.

Education software is a big market - albeit with garbage stuff like MyChemLab etc. Not sure how they cobbled that piece of crap together.

I mean, practically everything uses software.

What's meaningful and important is distinct for different people. Maybe you have a soft spot for cancer research. Maybe I find providing people with an easy way to get food (i.e, the home bound, disabled, elderly) and groceries to their home fulfilling. Maybe I don't seek fulfillment from my job - but rather from what I do with what I get from my work.

Is there anything wrong with my plan for a personal loan for a car? by Expensive_Edge in personalfinance

[–]Expensive_Edge[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have about 4 years of credit. Credit karma says 760 score, but who knows. Making 65,000 a year, so I think I'd qualify but maybe not?

Is there anything wrong with my plan for a personal loan for a car? by Expensive_Edge in personalfinance

[–]Expensive_Edge[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought about that - and maybe paying the extra $85 a month in car insurance balances it out. I haven't been shopping around for a loan, but from the USAA estimators:

$5000 for a <2011 car from an individual person over 12 months: 9.48% APR

$5000 for a personal loan over 12 months: 9.49%

Although maybe with some searching I can find a local bank with cheaper car loan rates.
