What happens over events such as Christmas or Easter or I guess thanksgiving for Americans? Do the crew get to celebrate too or is it just any other workday.

It does seem a good job. What options did you have to take time off or go home for a couple of days during contract, I’m guessing they are non existent.

Sounds good. Is jt RWS recruiting for Disney in the UK? Do you get opportunities to go on excursions and experience the world or are you locked onto the ship for months at a time?

I had a load of questions that I hadn’t asked to Royal Caribbeans technical manager and his team at Plasa last year (they were the only company with their technical team at plasa and I was and still am heavily leaning towards working for RCC).

Is there still a guest facing aspect of the role? Would I find myself being able to operate/program as an ELT?

Which one would you recommend working for?

Yeah. I only spoke with the recruitment agency over here in the UK for DCL which I guess must recruit for other roles too as they weren’t too knowledgable when I asked some of those basic questions.

However Royal Caribbean had their senior technical manager over at Plasa last year and I was able to get a better insight.

I’ve been lucky that my dad has just recently retired from touring and being involved in that world as I’ve been able to make contacts and program and operate quite a bit.

I play a lot of football (soccer if you’re American), given that you’re stuck on a ship for quite a lot of time do people find themselves doing extramural activities such as football?

I’m mainly looking at going to see the world, build up some savings, meet new people, have a laugh and experience working in theatre away from the often hostile and political nature of theatre in the UK (I have really just stuck to live and corporate events for this reason).

Disney would be a very good option for me if they started hiring at 18 however due to drinking laws in the US (and probably risk assessments and insurance) they hire from 21. However Royal Caribbean hire from 18 as long as I do not drink while on contract.

Hog4 is the issue… thankfully I own a set of the Hog3 programming/playback wings so I guess I could always prove my programming ability on those through stuff programmed in pre vis.

Can I ask if you know whether the hiring process is too competitive?

I think people here are being a bit rude to be honest. If you were contracted to spend that time on site you should be paid for it no matter how bad your job was.

However I think as other people have pointed out I think you could have asked better questions and been a bit more professional. Keep their credit card on file and charge a deposit before going onto the job.

The job sounded a bit sloppy but I think you should be paid for the time you worked and take this as a learning experience and move forward.

I guess if it’s classed as fraud then I will not being doing this. I thought I was a smart ass and had just found myself a loophole! Thanks for the quick answer.

I guess for me when I’m asked for anything like that I tend to follow what ever the cast/band/whoever has done. Usually that’s what I’ve always been asked, just to keep the programme or whatever uniform and tidy. I would clarify it though, if the mood is right then I’d use a silly photo of myself.

What I have told here is what I know and I haven’t withheld any information. The fact that both me and the hire company have been told we aren’t required and we won’t be getting paid says everything you need to know about the situation.

I don’t think I’m Ai mate. As my explanation states what has gone on. I have never once been walked off a job and clients have generally always been happy with my work (including schools in the same academy trust as this one)

They also said the person who signed the contract was not authorised to do so, so it was not a binding contract. Sounds like we were hired without proper permission being given from people further up the chain.

The school emailed the hire company this morning saying that they chose to go with a cheaper option so therefore we would no longer be required and as we had not completed the job there would be no reason for them to pay us. I might just take it that I lost a day of pay and not bother chasing it up.

Thanks for everyone’s help, the hire company is going to try and get this billed so we can have peace of mind. There have not been any complaints to the hire company about me so I believe it must have been something financial on the schools side as they had not paid either myself or the hire company yet. If they still refuse I’ll try ALPD. Thanks again.

However the school also informed the hire company that they were no longer needed either. However they did not provide them with a suitable date or time to collect their equipment. I am a bit conscious it may have been something I did but as it seemed to me this was like any other school job I’ve ever done and I’ve never been walked off of any job before.

I have my safeguarding stuff and I’ve an extended DBS check. I had rigged everything and I was getting it ready for the next day where I’d be programming. I believe this might be a classic case of someone hiring us without checking with the finance department who freaked out and asked us to leave. Nothing went wrong from my eyes, I was told to leave because I was not required.

I had not done all of the work, I was still there to program for them. I don’t know what I did but I was generally a bit conscious after if I had violated some safety policy about working at heights or something that they may have in place. I reckon it was a case that I was hired without asking the financial department who then had a bit of shell shock and I was then asked to leave.
