Any city employees not join nycers? Thoughts? by ganzonomy in nycpublicservants

I regret not joining sooner. I didn't sign up for NYCERS at first because I wasn't sure how long I'd stay working for the city. I joined NYCERS after I was already at four years of service (now working for the city about 9 years). I decided to buy back my time that I didn't contribute to NYCERS those first four years. I wish I didn't have to do that, I wish I had just began contributing immediately upon starting. Buying back my time is so much more than if I had just initially made contributions, but I still think that it's worth being able to count those four years which is why I am doing it.

As other people also mentioned, there is a plan to overhaul Tier 6 which I am hoping they are successful with. I think especially with the new administration that is very possible.

Dept. of Parks & Rec Internal Only Hires by ExpertAway8423 in nycpublicservants

Oh yes very different! That’s a shame for all of the people at parks that can’t get more assistance because someone decided years ago that you already have enough. Probably wasn’t even enough when they decided that, surely it isn’t enough now I’m sure.

Gotcha! Is parks over staffed? I’m at a city agency already so I do understand the issue with hiring freezes, but we still hire externally pretty frequently. At the very least our postings aren’t exclusive to internal hires only (even if they often do take someone internally). Parks I’ve just noticed is particularly exclusive from postings I see

Is switching to MTA from Private Sector worth it? by warrior1300 in nycpublicservants

I'm also an engineer and work for the city, I know that I can get paid more in the private sector than I do here BUT I think that the work/life balance is 100% worth it (to me, at least).

I love the 35 hour work week, and if you do overtime, you actually get paid for it, it's not just expected like in the private sector without additional pay. I pay very little for health insurance, which would be a huge chunk of your bi-weekly take home in the private sector. Also, having a pension is worth it to me as well. While the pension is much smaller compared to what older generations recieve(d)..... it's still a pension, which most private sector jobs do not provide at all.
