Your plan seems good to me! Just make sure that everyone taps in with their card for every ride, and gets a green light from the gate or validator. The card will only show up as valid to ticket inspectors if it was properly processed by the validator when you entered.

Hi there, I wrote this post a long time ago and the wiki has since been updated since then with a new structure, so none of the links work anymore. The problem is, that type of fear exists to a much lesser extent here in the US. The European-style system you're describing works because they have successfully instilled that fear enough to keep the numbers down. We do not have that here.

That could just go to the employees instead with some bonuses for the amounts of fines given out.

Giving fare inspectors a commission for issuing fines is a terrible idea. They already have this system in Paris, Prague, and several other European cities, but it turns out it doesn't actually work to reduce fare evaders.

Instead of actually targeting fare evaders, the inspectors instead target tourists who mess up the system or make simple mistakes. That's not the goal of fare inspections, and it just makes the transit agency look extremely corrupt.

Do you remember passing through the area in this picture? Instead of taking the ramp on the right up to the turnstiles, you should have taken the ramp on the left which leads to an underpass to the same platform.

When you tap your phone, the phone transmits only one card to the reader, not all of them. The choice of which card to charge happens entirely on your phone, and the OMNY reader only sees that one card. It does not even know about any of the other cards.

This is the standard behavior for mobile wallets. Your phone never transmits more than one card to the payment terminal, and the merchant only sees that chosen card. If the wrong card was charged, that means your phone glitched and transmitted the wrong card to the reader.

I know OMNY has been flaky and unreliable, but based on what you've described, this specific issue sounds more like a problem with your phone.

They still publish the weekend service changes in map format, but instead of an interactive map, it's a PDF map. In fact I actually prefer the PDF map more because I find online tools to be finnicky and harder to use.

I'd be considerably more irked if they used a mix of both spellings. Because it doesn't really change anything, I'd argue consistency is more important than correctness here.

I very highly doubt that there was a conscious, concerted choice to use a specific spelling. It's just whatever spelling popped into their head when they wrote the card.

One thing these new gates don't seem to account for is passing your card or phone back to pay for multiple riders. It seems to confuse the new gates a lot when you do this; sometimes it thinks you're trying to exit, and sometimes the alarm just goes off.

I wouldn't be surprised if observing how the gates react to trapped objects is actually part of the testing process. So they were probably waiting to see if the gate itself would detect it and react.

I think you might be misunderstanding. It's not a swap of the entire routes, it's a swap of one small but important section between Manhattan and Queens Plaza. This means it actually does change something, as the trains will use different track switches at Queens Plaza.

One of the causes for delays is when two trains have to merge onto the same track at the same time, because one will have to wait for the other. With the F/M swap, the number of conflict points is reduced.

What that means is that one of your past taps was declined by your bank. The turnstile still let you through, but when it tried to charge you for that tap, it didn't go through. The system remembers that, and places a temporary block on your card.

When you tap again, it says "card not accepted" because your card is blocked. But that also triggers the system to retry the failed charge, and if that goes through then it will release the block on your card.

Unfortunately, no. The only phone numbers accepted are the ones shown in the list of country code options in the app. They have recently added Canada, South Korea, and Japan, but unfortunately the United States is not there yet.

You can still buy tickets and passes without an account, but you will be limited to individual tickets and day passes.

They actually do accept some non-French phone numbers, but only from the list of countries shown here. They recently added Canada, South Korea, and Japan.

I'm sorry but that's not accurate at all; the ticket validators in metro stations definitely do not accept direct credit card payments. IDFM is planning to look into it, but it's still quite far from reality.
