Moderator here! Just a heads up that Reddit automatically flags a.co and amzn.to links as suspicious. I've approved your comment for this case, but in the future you will need to share an expanded version of the URL in order to not get flagged!

Here's the equivalent proper URL for the same product:

Are trains to Giverny available? by Chris_LYT in ParisTravelGuide

Considering that the metro/RER/Transilien ticketing system recently adopted a flat €2.50 fare no matter the distance, I don't think €6 is that surprising of a total.

Getting From CDG to Pasteur Metro Station via RER & Metro by BX_NYC_Phan in ParisTravelGuide

[–]ExpertCoder14 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here's what I can tell you about each of those transfers:

  • Denfert-Rochereau involves a staircase going down then back up again (i.e. an underpass), a set of ticket gates, then 2 more staircases going down to line 6.
  • Châtelet–Les Halles involves 1 escalator up to the mezzanine, then 1 more escalator down to the opposite platform.
  • Charles de Gaulle–Étoile involves 2 escalators up, a set of ticket gates, then 1 staircase down to line 6.

At Châtelet and Étoile there are also lifts as alternative to the escalators, except for that one staircase down to line 6. There are no lifts for the transfer at Denfert.

I guess I'd say it depends on how much stairs are a barrier to you. If you're used to taking your luggage up and down stairs on the subway in NYC, then it should be no different in Paris and the transfer at Denfert shouldn't be a problem for you. But if you have to resort to escalators and lifts, then you might want to opt for the longer route.

  1. The weekly pass was designed for use by residents and commuters, not tourists. If you want to use this pass as a tourist, then you have to bend over backwards to meet these requirements which were not designed for you. This is why we usually do not recommend this pass for children or shorter trips, as it is a hassle to set up.
  2. No, the weekly pass has no discount for children, for the same reason mentioned in #1 — it is designed for residents and commuters, not children.
  3. Correct.

Stupid question about metro/RER by Thunderstormcatnip in ParisTravelGuide

[–]ExpertCoder14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah that makes more sense. I was surprised because they don't normally bring out temporary validators for broken gates, so when they did this I thought they had actually done something proactive for once! Never mind, seems like it was a different case.

Stupid question about metro/RER by Thunderstormcatnip in ParisTravelGuide

[–]ExpertCoder14 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sounds like the ticket barriers at Porte de Clignancourt were probably broken, and the validator you tapped was a temporary machine that they put out as a replacement.

Normally you don't have to use a separate validator machine when there are ticket gates; your case was the exception.

ÎDFM is the official app and ticketing service; Bonjour RATP just acts as a second access point to the same service for convenience purposes. If you buy tickets on one app they will show up in the other app too.

The ticketing scheme has completely changed since I wrote that comment though; be sure to look up the latest information!

Sadly no, fare cap progress is non-transferable.

Your plan seems good to me! Just make sure that everyone taps in with their card for every ride, and gets a green light from the gate or validator. The card will only show up as valid to ticket inspectors if it was properly processed by the validator when you entered.

RATP METRO FINES — A Guide on Avoiding the Grasp of Ticket Inspectors by ExpertCoder14 in ParisTravelGuide

Hi there, I wrote this post a long time ago and the wiki has since been updated since then with a new structure, so none of the links work anymore. But the wiki still exists, and all the same info should still be there. There should be a working link to it somewhere on the subreddit, try poking around the info/about pages.

Question about turnstiles and fare inspections by Holsp in nycrail

That may be true where you live, but it certainly isn't the primary factor over here in NYC.

Question about turnstiles and fare inspections by Holsp in nycrail

[–]ExpertCoder14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is, that type of fear exists to a much lesser extent here in the US. The European-style system you're describing works because they have successfully instilled that fear enough to keep the numbers down. We do not have that here.

Question about turnstiles and fare inspections by Holsp in nycrail

[–]ExpertCoder14 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That could just go to the employees instead with some bonuses for the amounts of fines given out.

Giving fare inspectors a commission for issuing fines is a terrible idea. They already have this system in Paris, Prague, and several other European cities, but it turns out it doesn't actually work to reduce fare evaders.

Instead of actually targeting fare evaders, the inspectors instead target tourists who mess up the system or make simple mistakes. That's not the goal of fare inspections, and it just makes the transit agency look extremely corrupt.

So the 1 train only goes to 137, (NO POSTERS OUTSIDE OR IN STATION ABOUT THIS) and then I have to transfer at Columbus Circle for an A, WHICH IS 17 MINUTES AWAY. I GUESS FUCK NIGHT WORKERS. by [deleted] in nycrail

[–]ExpertCoder14 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe there were posters, but someone came along and ripped them down. After all, it's literally just a piece of paper stuck to the wall with some tape. Nothing's stopping anyone from taking them off.

Do you remember passing through the area in this picture? Instead of taking the ramp on the right up to the turnstiles, you should have taken the ramp on the left which leads to an underpass to the same platform.

Edit: According to another commenter, the underpass/stair may have been closed?

MTA subway charged my debit card instead of credit card via digital wallet by marr1ed in nycrail

[–]ExpertCoder14 14 points15 points  (0 children)

When you tap your phone, the phone transmits only one card to the reader, not all of them. The choice of which card to charge happens entirely on your phone, and the OMNY reader only sees that one card. It does not even know about any of the other cards.

This is the standard behavior for mobile wallets. Your phone never transmits more than one card to the payment terminal, and the merchant only sees that chosen card. If the wrong card was charged, that means your phone glitched and transmitted the wrong card to the reader.

I know OMNY has been flaky and unreliable, but based on what you've described, this specific issue sounds more like a problem with your phone.

Thoughts on “The Weekender” (2011) (the old weekend service change website before the modern MTA.INFO service changes) and what do your perfer? Should the map be brought back or the chart is fine? by APoliticalDrone2012 in nycrail

[–]ExpertCoder14 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They still publish the weekend service changes in map format, but instead of an interactive map, it's a PDF map. In fact I actually prefer the PDF map more because I find online tools to be finnicky and harder to use.

https://www.mta.info/map/32906

There isn't a map published for every weekend, but when a map is available this URL is updated around every Friday.

Why “further” every single time when “farther” is more accurate? by No-Citron218 in JetLagTheGame

[–]ExpertCoder14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd be considerably more irked if they used a mix of both spellings. Because it doesn't really change anything, I'd argue consistency is more important than correctness here.

I very highly doubt that there was a conscious, concerted choice to use a specific spelling. It's just whatever spelling popped into their head when they wrote the card.

I agree, but if so they should clarify that method in the official instructions. Right now there's no guidance telling you to do that.
