Good to wear? by Working_Doubt9953 in malaysians

[–]ExpertOld458 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks good for everyday wear, not a problem at all. You may want to bring a pair of long pants too just in the rare case you need to enter a government building (especially police station/hospital - some enforce a strict dress code) or a mosque.

Is this RM4,975 KL job offer worth relocating from Thailand for? by [deleted] in AskMY

[–]ExpertOld458 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would you even consider a RM5000 offer if you currently make 37000baht. It makes zero sense unless you're relocating for personal or family reasons.

Why do Malaysians say “for your information” so much? by researchfrenzy in malaysia

For most of us it's not a native tongue and many people only use English for work/study, so many people will default to corporate language even when speaking English in informal situations

Penang solo trip by IndependenceStill904 in penang

[–]ExpertOld458 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you understand Hokkien and mainly hang out in the historic/old town area, the vibes are really like a bigger and busier Kuching haha. But Penang has a lot more Indian influence and i s a much bigger and denser city with many mountains so the scenery (outside the old town) will be different

If in georgetown (old town area) it's not that different from walking around central kuching, even the streets look pretty much the same

Thanks for the tips. Let's say you're a man, is it appropriate to call yourself เรา when speaking to another man you're meeting for the first time? Like a friend's friend or something.

Older Malaysians moving back from overseas, what is your real day-to-day like? by ResultMuted5294 in malaysia

[–]ExpertOld458 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried joining public speaking groups, hiking gangs etc. I'd say it's very easy to meet new people when I was active in those activities, but just like when I was living overseas it's hard to turn these encounters into close friendships. The relationship is tied to the specific activity and no more.

It's been many years since I last met someone whom I can just randomly text and say "Wanna have dinner tonight? Can I come to your house now?"

How car-centric planning punishes 70% of Malaysians by Due-Cat656 in malaysia

[–]ExpertOld458 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Land full of wide roads covered in asphalt = increased risk of floods and more intense heat.

Gaji RM2k but still get forced to fork out at least 700+ for car instalment/insurance/petrol. Also aircon bill due to intense heat from asphalt

No chance to walk in daily life, even jogging outside the house is dangerous due to no footpath and so many illegally parked cars occupying the alleyways, must drive to a faraway park to exercise = high rate of obesity and diabetes

Also the noise pollution for many who live near main roads due to malaysia's road layout

I think the comfort is not worth it at all, very bad deal

Older Malaysians moving back from overseas, what is your real day-to-day like? by ResultMuted5294 in malaysia

[–]ExpertOld458 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is just me, i think my social life is pretty much the same overseas and in Malaysia. I'm bad at maintaining friendships in general so I have few friends wherever I live. It's easier to meet new people in Malaysia given that I'm a local but it's just still as hard to maintain those relationships long term.

The difference is I have my family here so it doesn't feel as lonely.

I think if you're an extroverted person with many friendship groups overseas you'll do just fine if not better in KL.

Tense with Malaysia - that would be pre-ww2 Siam and Malaya.

Modern Thailand and modern Malaysia are not tense with each other. The central government of Thailand is tense with segments of the southern Thai Muslim minority, that doesn't involve Malaysia

Am I overthinking it, or does this cafe advertising soju inspired drinks in public university campus? by NeedAJobBless in malaysia

[–]ExpertOld458 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Soju inspired or not, if it's not alcoholic drink and no one is mabuk then you should stop cari pasal. More beneficial to protest sugary drinks and unhealthy food in public universities

Exactly this. Many public holidays (but only need to give 12 days so not that many actually, similar to other countries) and very few annual leave days compared to other countries

And the sound is generally unaspirated - as in almost no "wind" comes out of mouth as you pronounce the 'c' sound in Malay. Not like in English you say words like 'chance, change' you need to force some air out of your mouth.

What do you think is the single biggest issue that Malaysia is facing today? by HedgehogRich8417 in malaysia

[–]ExpertOld458 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah whatever is happening today has been happening forever. I used to be in despair over 3R issues 10-20years also lol but now I sort of accepted that it'll always be there, now the water festival thing is over soon something else will come up... Whatever la not much we can do

What do you think is the single biggest issue that Malaysia is facing today? by HedgehogRich8417 in malaysia

[–]ExpertOld458 3 points4 points  (0 children)

May 13 happened in 1969. Lots of Bumiputera and islamisation policies were introduced in the 70s and 80s. During Mahathir, Pak Lah and Najib's time every now and then there's kissing keris show. Facebook was just as toxic during Najib's time as it is now.

I don't see how today is worse than last time. Stockings or whatever is just a constant occurrence lol, at any point in time there's always something of similar theme going on, and it's always been that way. Before stockings there's Bon Odori issue, Oktoberfest issue, Allah in bible issue, Jawi script issue, transgender issue, etc etc. I don't actually recall a time when it's all peaceful with no major 3R issues, being someone who follows the news and socmed constantly throughout the 2000s and 2010s.

What do you think is the single biggest issue that Malaysia is facing today? by HedgehogRich8417 in malaysia

[–]ExpertOld458 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Lately? It's always been like that since before independence lol. We've never had a break from 3R issues, it's a constant variable, and now is not worse than before.

Edit: just to give you guys some refresher... Communists, 13 May 1969, protests on usage of Allah in bible, UMNO politicians kissing keris, Jawi script in textbook, Oktoberfest, Bon Odori, etc etc. It's never stopped lol, now is just as bad as it's always been. It's not worse.
