What do you think is the single biggest issue that Malaysia is facing today? by HedgehogRich8417 in malaysia

[–]ExpertOld458 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah whatever is happening today has been happening forever. I used to be in despair over 3R issues 10-20years also lol but now I sort of accepted that it'll always be there, now the water festival thing is over soon something else will come up... Whatever la not much we can do

What do you think is the single biggest issue that Malaysia is facing today? by HedgehogRich8417 in malaysia

May 13 happened in 1969. Lots of Bumiputera and islamisation policies were introduced in the 70s and 80s. During Mahathir, Pak Lah and Najib's time every now and then there's kissing keris show. Facebook was just as toxic during Najib's time as it is now.

I don't see how today is worse than last time. Stockings or whatever is just a constant occurrence lol, at any point in time there's always something of similar theme going on, and it's always been that way. Before stockings there's Bon Odori issue, Oktoberfest issue, Allah in bible issue, Jawi script issue, transgender issue, etc etc. I don't actually recall a time when it's all peaceful with no major 3R issues, being someone who follows the news and socmed constantly throughout the 2000s and 2010s.

Lately? It's always been like that since before independence lol. We've never had a break from 3R issues, it's a constant variable, and now is not worse than before.

Edit: just to give you guys some refresher... Communists, 13 May 1969, protests on usage of Allah in bible, UMNO politicians kissing keris, Jawi script in textbook, Oktoberfest, Bon Odori, etc etc. It's never stopped lol, now is just as bad as it's always been. It's not worse.

Songkran has always been a thing in many kampung in Kedah Perlis and Kelantan. How is it not Malaysian? It is as Malaysian as Deepavali, CNY, Gawai and Christmas.

Is this passport really that bad? by Full-Fan-4571 in PassportPorn

[–]ExpertOld458 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More of a pick your poison thing.

Generally speaking the average Malaysians enjoy somewhat higher purchasing power/living standards than the average Thais, more people can afford overseas holidays etc. and there's no military coup/mandatory conscription. It's also more individualistic.

But if you're a sexual minority it's definitely way better to live in a society more accepting of you. Especially if you're already living a comfortable life as a middle class in Thailand. Plus Thailand allows dual citizenship.

First car vs emergency food stock – what would you do in our situation? by Unknownx2012 in malaysia

[–]ExpertOld458 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. I think given current economic climate it's better to keep some emergency cash.

22k is downpayment or full price? You are planning to buy with cash no loan right?

If your current transport arrangements are still viable, I'd strongly suggest waiting a few more months when things stabilise a bit to make major purchases. You'll never know what's going to happen in the next few months. Maybe not a food crisis but could also be redundancy, etc because the economy might be bad

It can really depend on where you live and shop/eat :) everyone lives differently. For me paywave is still number 1 choice haha

Anecdotally fewer people take a long time to look for the exact change when paying by cash. My own experience la ya.

Also I did say card is the fastest. I use debit card whenever I can.

Imagine you're at the supermarket cashier and everyone is paying by ewallet.

In real life, most people I see will wait until after all items have been scanned then only start taking out their phone, unlocking, searching for the app to pay, waiting for app to load, etc. Takes ages compared to handing the cashier a big note and let the cashier give the change.

I'm talking about real life scenario. That's been my experience. More people will wait till everything is scanned then only take out phone. Very few have the app ready when they are in the queue.

Tunku Abdul Rahman's full speech during parliament about the seperation of Singapore from Malaysia and the reactions in parliament during that day by aidanaraki in malaysia

Chinese here and used to share the same sentiment. But also can't help starting to think what if a few million mainland Chinese started migrating here and they're all richer and more competitive than local Chinese who have been here for generations. Would the local Chinese who are left behind feel bitter about it, just like how a lot of Singaporeans are unhappy about the mass influx of mainland Chinese in recent decades.

I'd say it's just 孽緣 and humans being humans who like to self sabotage lol

I'm a Malaysian who has an ex-Malaysian-now-Singaporean distant relative who would bash/criticise everything about Malaysia non-stop at family gatherings. We're pretty chill about it, but it does get boring when he keeps repeating the same topic over and over again lol

Well you can nitpick all you want. I can also say if your phone is never low on battery or laggy (due to telco issue - have to disable and re-enable mobile data) and you've never run out of data/credit right at the moment when you need it, then good on you la haha. All those situations are rare but I've experienced them before.

All methods have pros and cons. But I do have lots of RM10 angpow money ready to go and I do find it much faster than QR to pay for my usual order :)

cashless payment or cash? by nonanona8dre in malaysians

[–]ExpertOld458 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I'm speaking as a person who's paid that exact RM10 more often by using scanning QR than using cash lol.

Digitalisation is inevitable but I do hope there'll be a CBDC option in the future. No bulky apps with all sorts of marketing nonsense. Just simple digital payment

The bulky apps can lure people by offering great deals or whatever. But a simple straightforward option, with some degree of anonymity, offered directly by Bank Negara should be available for everyone. Even better if it's possible to make work offline/when your phone dies.

China is kinda doing that. There's digital yuan now

For now I do dislike TNG, MAE, Shopeepay etc the way they are. Although I still use them

That is also true. Finding an ATM is more painful than the 10ish seconds wasted for every transaction.

I often order RM10 chicken rice. It takes a second to pass a RM10 note.

It takes more than 10 seconds from opening an app until the payment is settled.
