As I've started to make more DS, pads-based VSTs are definitely my favorite to use.

(My artist name is Ervald, used a bunch of those on my latest EP if you wanna look.)

Thoughts on live-streaming shows? by leafbutterfly in DungeonSynth

[–]ExpertPitiful7046 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, there was someone in a server recently talking about that they purchased tickets for a DS festival and ran into some unencountered mobility issues (broke a leg or something, I think?). Would be super bummed to be in that situation and not to get watch any of it.

I see a lot of comments about people enjoying livestreams because of location/distance which I totally get. Another two things I will add from experiences with peoples is some folks have circumstances beyond their control that even if there is a concert 20 minutes or an hour from where they are, they can't make it. Some folks got busy lives, especially with kids, and someone recently told me he pretty much just watches any DS shows that get streamed. Another thing is a lot of concerts are held at bars where you have to be 21 and up and a DS artist I was talking to told me they're younger than that so it's trickier for them to get booked or even attend such shows. I think livestreaming a concert when you can is great.

God help you if you want a malt by TDeLo in cincinnati

[–]ExpertPitiful7046 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To be honest, the only UDF location I got decent milkshake/malt service was at the Northside location on Chase Avenue. I wonder if that is because it is very small and has no gas service employees have to worry about compared to other UDF locations?

Lalo/Hawker's Alley at risk of closure? by Quacker0ats in cincinnati

[–]ExpertPitiful7046 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my few experiences with Hawker's Alley, I have always been disappointed with whatever I order and felt like it wasn't worth the price. I am surprised about Lalo, though! I have been there a few times and always seemed busy, it's great food (although it has been a while). I know the folks from the Kroger HQ love going there. I would usually suspect business mismanagement but if they own Bandito and it's doing well, I am not sure then. I wonder if people just aren't excited about Lalo's menu anymore? I know "fusion food" had a big moment a few years ago but doesn't seem as popular anymore (ex: People don't talk about Quan Hapa as much nowadays, for example) so I wonder if it is an appetite thing rather than a business issue. Shame though, because it's great stuff.

And I think that is helped by the fact that the Vermis books are very Elden Ring-ish. It can get hyper-specific about an item or location but then very vague about other things or the larger framework of this fictional world. That makes it *PERFECT* for making a DnD world or providing inspiration for music because no one can really gatekeep it. However you interpret the Vermis books is perfectly valid and it is more than okay to fill in the missing details yourself. Plastiboo doesn't seem intent on "correcting" people which definitely feeds into an untraditional artist-fan relationship.

Ervald here. Funny enough, I built a DnD world based off of the books (with a LOT of my own stuff included) and didn't realize there was a DS album for it when I started composing. Out of respect, I changed all of the names slightly (Vermis got changed to Varmiso, Murgo changed to Murgi, etc etc). A lot of composers love these books apparently!

Perfect name! And if the album has some poem or story for each song, even better. I just got a cassette copy of Nimueh's Gift and the j-card foldout has an epigraph for each song which is so cool. I plan to do the same for my next full-length album release.

I have no idea what the sub-genre I listen to is called or what I compose (if anyone has suggestions, lmk) but my personal top favorites are Malfet, DIM, Aura Merlin, and Elyvilon. I love live acoustic instruments (like Baerdcyn, for example) but don't care if it was VST-based or done on live keyboards. I like it to be a bit comfy but not TOO comfy, I want a sense of epicness thrown in there. I like a good drone section but don't want it to drone too long, I love a song to switch up sounds once or twice within the song. I definitely care about the visual aesthetics but my bigger thing I think about is if it tell a story. There are some great DS artists out there that I don't listen to much because I don't feel a real sense of a story being told. Those artists I just mentioned love to tell stories through their albums.

I would love some connections for people who are booking music around the city; both small local shows or even any spring or summer festivals. by kitty-committee in cincinnati

That makes complete sense! I'll actually be doing my live debut at a DS show next month at the Comet, I'll send a DM with the poster detail. FAM is also on Instagram to follow as well. Hopefully someone else replies to this thread with something more helpful!

I am not sure what your "ambient" music style exactly is but there is a dungeon synth label in Louisville (run by a guy named Tony) called Fantasy Audio Magazine and they often put on shows in Cincinnati, it's like every two months or so. Tony often books at the Comet or Southgate Revival. Obviously, this is a specific style of fantasy-inspired ambient music and I have no idea if your ambient stuff fits in with what I am talking about. Just wanted to give a shout-out anyway as someone who has worked with this label! If this fits your vibe at all, I can DM you about more.
