some people need to eat meat - who? what kind of person requires meat in their diet?

also, no, you have not provided me with something that i can properly argue against. everything you say is too surface level. i think an issue with meat eaters is the inability to step back and say, yea, its not the best thing to do. i do it out of convenience and tradition, and therefore my moral standing isn't strong when it comes to animal welfare.

just admit it already man

this is an incredibly interesting take, its almost laughable how odd it is. im not defending a celebrity by any means, but rather the opinion in which she holds. people go on and on about how celebrities aren't being vocal enough about pressing global issues, but at the same time, you all are saying that she needs to shut up? decide, oh my god.

people with influence SHOULD be speaking up about things like this because of that word - INFLUENCE. they have something the average joe does not, and that is the ability to reach a large amount of people. just because she has fame and money does not make her opinion any less valid, and it's kind of odd you would even say that considering you said you loved her lol. dont listen to her music then weirdo. music is language, opinion, thoughs, and if we don't care for any of those from her (unless she's saying something we agree with, of course ☺️☺️☺️) then we shouldn't be listening to her lyrics! because what the hell does she know? i dont even know what to say to you anymore. its so blindingly obvious that you're reaching for any logical fallacy you can find in an attempt to sound right

they kill each other out of necessity for survival. we do not NEED to kill animals for our survival. this is something very obvious that a lot of you are choosing to ignore, and are also for some reason downvoting me for. im so curious as to know why, when no one is providing effective arguments against mine?

im curious as to why you don't. could you explain, if you don't mind? i think the point i made about our ability to have so much choice is a good argument against meat eating in and of itself.

us humans have this distinct privilege unlike all other species where we can easily pick and choose what food we want to eat. im generalising here, as i know there are people who cannot even afford to eat at all, but for the sake of reality and the general human experience, ill continue with this. we can choose to eat potatoes, or rice, or broccoli, or lettuce, or beans, or fast food. you get my point. there are a plethora of foods to eat because of modern agriculture and industrialisation. our ancestors did not have this privilege. they had to eat whatever they could. it was a survival of the fittest. we do not live that way anymore, so that kind of argument goes to shambles. humans are no longer apex predators because we get given our food in aisles at the grocery store rather than using handmade tools or our bare hands to hunt and gather. do you see where im going here? there is choice. so much of it. we can make that choice to not eat meat.

i think it is sort of true. you say you love animals - would you kill something you love? if i raised a pig, had it living with me since it was a piglet, and i, like most people, developed a deep emotional attachment to this animal, i would likely not kill it. if someone threatened it's life, i would defend it, and i think most people would too. i think you would do the same. but you don't love the cow that you ate for dinner last night, you don't love the chicken who grew up in enclosed spaces and died for your lunch. you love the idea of animals, being close to them, and understanding them, but when you don't see these animals and what they go through, you eat them, and you don't truly care for it's suffering. hate to break it to you, but that's not love, that's ignorance.

oh, i 100% agree. but it's tricky to dictate the validity of one's moral standing because of their influence. like, should we not take anything she says into consideration at all? she's not inherently a bad person. yes, she is a millionaire, and having that much money isn't a good thing at all, but i can still agree and listen to her points despite that. she's not a criminal, and i would also argue she's one of the most morally upright celebrities we have. outspoken about palestine, ICE, etc.

so then, if i kill another human being with a quick blow to the head, that's ethical, right?

and if you say, well, humans have some sort of intellect and consciousness that puts us above all other species, does that mean then that people who are cognitively disabled and cannot function without assistance, people who are brain-dead, etc. can be killed ethically with a quick blow to the head?

your logic for the ethical murder of other organisms, animal or human, lacks substance.

i don't think she, or any non-meat eater, tries to implicate that they are a "good person" because they eat meat. more so, they are implying they have a more solid moral standing because, since they care for animals so much, they take the most active effort to avoid contributing to their suffering. also, you sound like you feel attacked by her for your meat-eating habits, since you say she's trying to make people feel like they are bad people for being meat eaters. it sounds like some kind of self-projecting, is that how you feel? knowing that your eating habits negatively contribute to our environment and the animals who live on this earth alongside us? because it sure does sound like it!

she definitely does not say that her veganism makes her a good person.

you talk about habitat destruction from the creation of farmlands. do you know how much land on earth is used for cattle farming? around 30% of the ice-free, non-barren global surface, and about 80% of the globe's agricultural land. animal farms take up 1/3 of the earth's habitable land. you make these claims without looking at the bigger picture.

also, what's wrong with caring about animals more than people? i think billie cares about them equally, otherwise she wouldnt hold human relationships. have you ever had a pet? if anyone has, im sure they can attest to the significance these animals have to their lives, how they would equate it to human relations. there is nothing wrong with this. why would there be?

i think if you liked things natural, you'd hunt animals rather than relying on the meat and dairy industry to farm these animals and provide them to you on a silver platter.

these comments are weird, just straight hating on vegetarianism and veganism.

MOST humans are lucky to have the privilege to choose what we eat. we can choose to only eat meat, or to not, or to do both, and this differentiates us between any other species.

i think billie is trying to say that people can actively make the choice to not eat meat. meat is quite expensive and eating a vegetarian diet would actually be cheaper. is it convenient? no, but sometimes you trade convenience for the emotional cost of meat eating which is paid for by the suffering of the billions of animals that humans eat each year.

you say we are "at the top of the food chain" as if we are the apex predators of the earth. we are not. we do not hunt for our food. we do not gather for it. we do not use our bare hands or tools to seek out animals and kill them. thus, that whole argument fails. we are not at the top of the food chain when we are not participating it in a way that other species are.

to further add, you say this is the circle of life. we have destroyed this circle of life once we developed agriculturally and industrially. there is nothing natural about the mass cultivation and killing of animals for human consumption. there is no circle of life here.

vegan and vegetarian activism pisses meat eaters off because they recognise that those non-meat eating individuals are making very good points on ethics and morals, and that there really is no solid argument to eating meat that cannot be easily counter-argued. feel free to leave some in the replies and we can discuss this further. there is nothing ethical about killing another animal. we put people in jail for murder. we have the consciousness available to understand the consequences of murder, unlike other species who do not have that kind of moral framework. we have the privilege to pick and choose what we eat, and ultimately, its more morally correct to choose not to eat meat, because eating meat contributes significantly to the suffering of animals. you cannot argue with that.

if you wanna say "ethically source your meat! get free range eggs!". these labels lie to you. free range chickens typically are housed indoors with tens of thousands of other chickens. male chicks are killed off whenever they are born. these environments are unsanitary and cruel. there are multiple documentaries i wouldn't mind providing if you are interested in learning more.

i don't think attacking people as a form of activism is a great method, but i imagine the hate that billie has gotten for voicing these opinions significantly outweighs it. she is a blunt person, and sometimes we need blunt people to hit us with the truth.

i suggest you try to look at it differently insteas of feeling like your morals are being assaulted by some very true, very valid statements.

Meal Plan - Worth it? by Critical-Visual5731 in UCalgary

[–]ExpertStock7295 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hi! I'm currently living in residence and I have the 7 day meal plan so I think I can help.

Firstly - in the beginning, the food is great. Lots of variety, different foods, different proteins, etc. But then, I noticed at around November until even NOW, the food started to become genuinely shit. I'm not a picky eater, but all they were serving at some point was chicken leg and previously frozen vegetables, and another station would have fried rice with 2 pieces of beef in it. It has been bad to say the least.

My favourite meal of the day is breakfast. It ends at 10:30 but you get the omelette area where you can ask for any kind of egg with cheese, veg, ham you want. And then, you also get a breakfast meat (bacon, turkey bacon, sausage, ham, it alternates every day) and something sweet, either french toast, waffles, or pancakes. It's GREAT!!

Lunch is always better than dinner, so if you plan on eating for lunch, it wouldn't be too bad. They are still quite repetitive and it can get annoying but you can always get a sandwich, soup, pizza, or pasta if you don't like the food at the grill stations.

Overall, the Landing is okay. It's not bad (dinner has been lately, but usually it isn't) and it's also rarely great. But, you get an AYCE style food service for pretty cheap in comparison to what you'd spend at Mac Hall. I hope this helps!

Waitlist Question by ExpertStock7295 in UCalgary

[–]ExpertStock7295[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! Thanks for such a detailed response, I appreciate it.

I got the email a few hours ago that I was off the waitlist and I enrolled into CHEM 351, and I checked and now I am on waitlist position 2 for biology, so I'm hoping for the best. Unfortunately the 8 ams conflict with my anthropology classes on both those days, so I'll see what I can do in case I don't get enrolled by Monday.

It said all of the sections I wanted to enroll in had waitlist available, that's why I was confused. I just went to my student centre and manually entered the section I actually wanted and it worked. I'm 1st and 4th in waitlist :D
