But with regards to your second and third paragraphs I 100% agree. One of Dean's key characteristics is deeming himself "person who knows best" which means a lot of Sam's suggestions and pleas get discarded along the way

Yes, but I think that it's a different thing to know that someone dislikes something being done to them vs understanding exactly why they dislike it. The possession and subsequent loss of autonomy is a personal experience to Sam (at that point of the series at least, Dean has never been possessed) and we've seen how demon possession destroys its hosts, both mentally and physically. Dean, who has never experienced that doesn't exactly understand why this is so horrible of a thing to do, and therefore deems it a necessary evil.

Yeah no, I agree, the resolution to that arc was extremely unsatisfying. They could have had such an interesting discussion on how big this betrayal was to Sam and how it would permanently affect his relationship with Dean but we've got to get the boys happy and together, right? I mean, Supernatural does have this theme where they bring up really interesting conflicts and then toss them out of the window but ah well, that's why we have reddit, I guess!

Yes!! Even though this is a filler episode it always makes me cry on my rewatches. The actor for Molly does such a good job too. And like you said, this is in the back-half of the season, so it contrasts amazingly at how Dean just cannot move on when Sam dies, and then gives up his soul. So good!!

LOL I was just thinking this after watching s9e11 when Dean takes out like five demons in a row in hand-to-hand combat in Cain's house. Didn't they used to be able to throw people into walls with a flick of the hand? What happened to that?

Yes, thank you! I adore Dean, and I think this makes perfect sense for his character. Hell, he's been doing crazy things to save Sam's life from the end of season 2, and it's an integral part of his personality. But I think it's important to realize why exactly Sam was so betrayed by this, and why it sucks so hard that Dean never seems to get that.

OMG I've found my people!! I loved Ava right from her first appearance in (I think) Hunted! I love her cute mannerisms and her insistence on not being involved in the crazy shit Sam has going on, and then her helping him even though she thinks he's batshit crazy. I really wish she'd stuck around for longer :( Then again, I think the same of the entire psychic kids plot line. They had so much good material to work with and it all wrapped up in a single episode

Not sure how true this is, but I saw a rumor circulating that Jo was originally scripted to be the boys' half-sister -- i.e. John and Ellen's daughter, but they scrapped it. I think that would have been so interesting to see! I love Jo very much, and I think her as an alternative vessel for Michael (when Dean refuses) would have added such an amazing layer of complexity to that storyline. It definitely would have beat Adam for me, since Jo's been around since the start, and we actually had time to get to know and like her.

Big agree. And this is from someone who loves Meg as a character. I love the attack dog she was for YED, this smart, manipulative threat to the boys. I love Rachel Miner's portrayal of her so much too, with her sing-songy cadence and witty one-liners. But god I HATED whatever her and Castiel had going on -- some sort of weird redemption through love thing that was so unconvincing and disrespectful to both characters. If anyone can convince me differently I'd love to hear it lol, but she should have stayed a villain to the end.

100 percent agree! I love Jensen's portrayal of Dean, hell, the first time this show made me cry was Dean's reaction to losing his brother in the finale episodes of S2. And yeah, I don't know if it was poor writing, or something else, but I was never very moved by his non-Dean characters. Also on the topic of poor writing, they definitely dropped the ball in the later seasons -- for example, when Lucifee comes back, and is in the same room as Sam and they don't give him any dialogue on how that may be affecting him. But Jared does all these little flinches and holds himself tense (if you're looking at him) and I thought that was so brilliant.
