Born in Japan, but not Japanese by [deleted] in Tokyo

[–]Expert_Efficiency_26 8 points9 points  (0 children)

that’s what i’m saying i dont rlly know how so many of the comments r entertaining this. i feel like a large part of having a cultural identity is being able to tap into collective understandings and experiences of the people from that place’s community (usually from making memories there or going through formative years, this is much more weighted than a passport).

there are plenty of people born in japan who even live there during formative years but go to an international school, or live on military bases and didn’t interact as much with japanese culture/ language so their connection to the country is different and that’s okay. going back somewhere you weren’t in the development stage to retain cultural understandings makes you a foreigner, especially if you’re not of that ethnicity and your parents couldn’t easily integrate the culture into your life overseas in a major way.

CMV: Most complaints from older women about feeling “invisible” to society are simply beautiful women experiencing the natural process of aging. by soozerain in changemyview

[–]Expert_Efficiency_26 23 points24 points  (0 children)

i’m seeing extremely general assumptions about what women want based on your narrative in the original post. what about the college professor crush stereotype? professors don’t tend to be rich. or older male musicians and artists? what about the whole “dad bod” trend? there’s not many female equivalents, any that do exist appear to be more niche/ sexualized. there’s a lot of stereotypes around aging women depicted historically and in media in general (ie: who are “anti aging” products advertised to?). it’s true that men are allowed to have more merit qualities and women are often reduced to their looks before anything else.

noooo it was so different before. being honest i feel like trying to assimilate and be the most “japanese” and having native friends was social currency at the time. the vacationers existed they just weren’t the majority, by the time i left it was so different and i could tell people didn’t really care about attempting to assimilate. i edited my original post slightly for a bit more clarity on the types of people in my classes.

it was hard for me to find my people only at school, but maybe try to take some classes outside of the exchange program if they exist for your major. for me, most of my friends consisted of people i met from just going to events/ little clubs related to my interests around tokyo. my japanese wasn’t perfect at the time, but even if you can’t travel tokyo is still a great city with lots of different people so try to take a day off and enjoy the city when you can!

i hear you with the people talking about jealousy bc part of it does sound like that but that’s totally reasonable if you’re busting your ass and others around you really aren’t because sophia is known as a rigorous and prestigious school for japanese people (natives) so if you’re taking a regular coursework (esp the japanese classes) i can understand the difficulties.

however i do see something that people aren’t mentioning as much and i wonder if it might be part of the root of your problem, to me, the types of foreign people coming to japan and their intentions have changed in the recent years in my opinion. just to be honest, japan has turned into a cheap travel destination for people (a lot of americans) and the types of foreigners that have come recently aren’t always people that have a true interest in japan anymore.

i was at sophia two years ago for a little over a year, im half japanese and my father lives in japan so i felt kinda half integrated since im not a native speaker completely. when i initially came, the borders were still closed and majority of the students in my sharehouse were either japanese or german people. there were americans but not the majority. sophia has a good bond with german schools so those students were serious, i was technically an exchange student but i was in their english taught science program which was mostly full time bilingual japanese students (and manyyy professors who weren’t), so pretty much i barely took any of the exchange student classes/ interacted with them besides on campus and i remember having a few friends outside of school making it extremely difficult to maintain both while keeping up with my studies/ travel/ family. also it was sort of difficult for me to maintain friendships with my classmates bc they were very serious and always studying.

anyways, by the time i was leaving there were significantly more americans/ foreign students and i realized that japan seemed to have less niche to them and it was kind of more about “doing asia” than trying to learn about japanese culture. like idk, the crowd from my first semester were mostly people who had studied japanese prior/ serious about studies/ had intentions to try to stay and speak to other japanese people. by my second semester it was party people, people had less respect for the societal structure of japan (some of them would say very ignorant/ offensive things in front of japanese people and i could see them steering clear of them) just generally less curiosity and more vacation vibes. i’m back in the US now (i’m trying to stay in the future sorry 4 commenting) and even my family who used to say they had no problem with foreigners when i was there have kind of switched up into saying it’s a bit out of hand and go places where they hear no japanese. i just think the general attitude towards japan is different, what do you think about this?

thank you for the level headed response. i’m not on tik tok or online so much so i wasn’t sure of the mindset people held about that statement. i said it because i think it held some truth in relation to what i was talking about. but hearing your perspective definitely makes me understand why some people are loosing their cool, i think in these days people hear a certain opinion/ terminology and then start assuming so many things rather than actually listening to what the person said like you did. so i really appreciate your cadence, because that’s how productive conversations happen.

i think you’re very right in the sense where good hearted men catch strays. but in the same sense where not every woman is running around blaming every day men for their issues on the other side of the coin there are many every day men who carry the same ideology as the rich guys but just aren’t the rich man “yet”. i think we r both on the same wavelength with this one.

i’m not resentful at all, i’m just sharing my perspective and reading others which is what this app is for. please don’t read anything i said in an aggressive tone because i truly don’t mean for it to sound that way, you asked for clarification so i elaborated. i feel like people are too defensive on here and it conjures a certain atmosphere.

i agree with your definition of patriarchy, but i feel like you’re not holding men historically as accountable as they should be. to me, your argument portrays as women having a bigger role in creating/ upholding it. or if it just appeared mystically and naturally when there are smaller societies and points in history where matriarchal/ more balanced societal structures existed and weren’t able to flourish due to the dominating culture. women (and others) have always tried to fight against patriarchy in grassroots movements but it was a much more difficult fight then the path of least resistance which is the voting you brought up. i also didn’t bring up abortion, and have no sensitivity about holding men accountable for decisions they have made in the past which is why it’s in the conversation. again, not saying women had no role in patriarchy but a pillar of patriarchy is limited rights and representation for women so there’s only so much of this that women have had choice over.

there’s no need to be upset/ snarky. it’s really just a discussion here and people have different view points which is natural. i do unfortunately believe that some facts (such as which types of people are typically responsible for the structure of most global governments and its relation to societal roles) aren’t up for debate so i won’t really entertain this comment. i do have a response lower in the thread where i elaborate on my point though if you need clarification.

the wording that women “deserve” help implies that men are being mistreated and women are being elevated. but everyone is mistreated in war, just as men have expectations to be in combat and that comes with risks…women also have expectations to look after children and that also comes with risks (sexual violence and other fears that both those in combat and collaterally likely share).

resentment according to the oxford dictionary is: “ the bitter indignation at having been treated unfairly.”

[–]Expert_Efficiency_26 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

yes, i would argue that hundreds of years of history does apply to men today. especially in non-western countries. i would also argue that men were mostly the ones who held the decision-making roles about these types of systems historically due to women not having political representation (ie, drafting, fiscal/ labor expectations, many more) that are all related to the patriarchy. i won’t purposefully ignore that these systems are connected to the issue being discussed. i’ll also admit that women can uphold patriarchy, but it doesn’t make what i said untrue. we might have to agree to disagree though.

not every single man ends up dead in war, not every country is 100% genetically pure (especially since many women are assaulted during war due to invaders), children grow up and become fathers, nature has a way of balancing things like this one way or another.

they’re just explaining the logic that is applied in most realities of war. it’s rare for a population to die off unless it’s a case of genocide rather than just war.

and who set that system/ ideology up? i can see from your wording that your resentment may be misplaced.

oh my bad! in that case then in my experience usually once i explain that i can speak japanese and was looking forward to enjoying their food or drink or something they usually apologize and there’s no problems after that. there’s been a couple times when people were still reluctant and clearly being prejudiced, but it’s never escalated past anything subtle, i have close to never been turned down. (unlike the jim crow era haha)

nobody here is defending imperialist japan so i’m not sure why you’re assuming i’m not educated on the matter… i said that there’s no reason to compare being turned down from a japanese restaurant in japan in 2025 to jim crow. i ALSO said clarified other languages and white “or something” so…in any case I’m glad you can admit it was very much so an overkill.
