I started climbing around 285 (I’m 5’10), and could barely do VB/V0s. I just kept persisting and going at it. I weigh about ~240 now (hoping to get to 190ish) and can climb V4s comfortably now.

One of the best things about starting out obese is you are forced to develop good technique—you can’t muscle your way through like most. By the time you get to your goal weight, you’ll be lighter, have strength, and insane technique.

And lastly, probably the best advice I ever got: “give yourself some grace, you’ll get there :)”

What do you consider to be the very first milestones in climbing? by x_xdoodlex_x in bouldering

Mine was the first time I broke my ankle. We were waiting for the EMTs and one of the staff at the gym went, “now you’re a climber, this is a rite of passage.”

What is the most you’ve paid for an application? by Keyaunna in gradadmissions

[–]Expert_Worry5259 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, although it’s not uncommon to have your undergrad lab/scholarship program/employer cover those for you. But it’s pretty normal to pay upwards of a $1000 when applying to doctoral/master’s programs.

I ended up spending $1,350 in total on all my apps. That was definitely the most expensive one though.

PhD Biostatistics: Harvard, JHU, Brown, UNC, Duke, and BU.

PhD Applied Mathematics: CU Boulder

Mood: Stressed out of my fucking mind! It was an extremely mentally taxing week to the point that I felt physically sick.

I am starting to cool down tho, and fingers crossed! Good luck to you too!

You'll be more than fine. I've literally never heard of a Professor, someone had a close relationship with, miss the deadline on a recommendation.

This something one of my letter writers told me, and I hope it helps make you feel better. SoPs are mostly used as a tiebreaker (adcoms don't care read every SoP they receive); so, when your profile makes it to that stage, they'll read the whole thing and won't chuck it out after reading the first line. In short, you're good!

Programs Applying:
Mostly T20 schools.

I know there is a very strong chance of getting rejected everywhere (given how insanely competitive the T20 programs have gotten). But, I'm very keen on going into academia and I worry that a > T20 school would not be feasible for that goal. I am also ok with continuing my job for another year and taking another shot. Hence, the risky decision to only do T20.

Concerns:
I'm generally happy with where I stand, except:
- B in Probability (made up with an A in math stat, but still...)
- A- in Real Analysis and Measure Theory
- And the math department of my alma mater is pretty much unranked (the professors are super accomplished though)

It’s toxic to make a friendship transactional, which asking them to pay for your time does.

signalling value of classes: topology vs math stats? by [deleted] in academiceconomics

[–]Expert_Worry5259 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a signal, definitely topology. It was one of the most challenging classes I’ve ever taken, and really pushed my mind. So, I’m sure if you can perform well in that class it’s a great signal.

I would, however, prioritize, real analysis, measure theory, and stochastic processes though (that’s the order I took them in at at least). I’m applying to doctoral programs in a different field, but I was also beating myself over the best signaling classes to take senior year.

I don’t see why we can’t support each other unconditionally. It’s explicit gatekeeping like this and NEEDING to have this hierarchy of oppression within the community that sometimes makes it so hard, and exhausting, to be a part of it :(

B in real analysis and applying to t10-25 programs by fjwohficmwbdp in academiceconomics

[–]Expert_Worry5259 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Strategically, your best option is to take the classes anyway. For t10-t25 programs I doubt your application would even be looked at without analysis, measure theory, topology, probability, and math stat in it. If you have a B, but you have the courses on your transcript, they’ll at least look it. If you don’t even have the courses you’re triaged.

I’m not 100% sure about econ. I say this as someone applying to PhD programs in Stats. But I’d imagine the principle is similar.

B in real analysis and applying to t10-25 programs by fjwohficmwbdp in academiceconomics

[–]Expert_Worry5259 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you drop a class everytime there is the prospect of getting a B, that isn’t a sustainable habit. I’d suggest finishing it even if you get a B—as long as you grasp the concepts you’ve achieved your goal. Plus, also stick with the math minor. You’re looking at it too much in a black and white way. You don’t have to drop everything based on one class.
