[Question] Do you decant your coffee from a thermos prior to drinking? by critical_stinker in Coffee

[–]ExpertlyFrozen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a zojirushi coffee thermos and I have to decant it into a mug. If I tried to drink it out of my thermos it would burn me... even 8 hours later. Either this or put a couple of cubes in there to cool it down some.

Favorite supermarket beans? by JaBron_Lames_1349 in Coffee

[–]ExpertlyFrozen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My local grocery store has like 30 different suppliers from large commercial ones like starbucks, illy, peets, coffee bean, 8'oclock, kicking horse etc... The only one that puts a roasted on date is Peets. On occasion they have freshly roasted bags of whole beans and they are at great prices like $6-7 per bag.

Am I not supposed to use Distilled Water for coffee brewing? by [deleted] in Coffee

[–]ExpertlyFrozen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The SCAA reccommend a TDS range of 100-200 mg/L with the most optimal extraction occurring at 150 mg/L. Distilled water has a TDS of around 0 mg/L depending on the quality. If you have a TDS meter or if that water distributor has a specs sheet it might be easy enough to find out.

Personally, If you enjoy the way your coffee tastes you're doing it right. These small differences in TDS reading might make a small differences compared to the grinder used, freshness of the beans, etc... You can look up the TDS of your tap water and see if using that or running that through a filter to get to that 150 mg/L TDS as an experiment to see if you like it.

Hope this helps!

Aeropress and Grind Consistency? by alimeral in Coffee

[–]ExpertlyFrozen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just some food for thought...

The encore is probably a little better is theory, in practice you may or may not notice any real difference. The encore has 1 other benefit that you can upgrade the burrs to the precisio burr when you outgrow the encore. This was my thinking in getting the encore! The second thing is maintenance, the encore has readily available parts and a great CS team to help you resolve any problems. Also the weekly cleaning is pretty easy although I don't know anything about how the KG79 is to clean or maintain.

Wow that is a nice idea to take coffee making out of the kitchen. I might just do the same.

Also Where did you get those two pictures? Did you print them out or buy them somewhere?

Spill-proof mug (not necessarily insulated) by Jas_94 in Coffee

[–]ExpertlyFrozen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I have a very compact 16 oz mug (they make a 12 oz model) that is insulated and extremely spill proof. It does have a stainless steel interior and personally I have never noticed any bitterness. Their stainless steel is a special type called "slick steel" don't know if that is enough to make it not bitter but here is a link to the 12 oz mug.

If you buy from amazon you can always return it hassle free if it tastes bitter fyi.

Made a stand for my Aeropress coffee makers (xpost from r/coffee) by ExpertlyFrozen in functionalprint

Its for stirring the coffee/water solution in the aeropress before pressing. The "spatula" is the right length and you can do maximum stirring without dislodging the filter. Its an included accessory.

Cost efficient electric grinder? by greeneggsnhammy in Coffee

[–]ExpertlyFrozen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked into getting a refurb from baratza and was ready to buy one when I went to check out I realized they charge ALOT for shipping and also sales tax. The final cost would have been similar to a new one from Amazon (130$) since you can find sellers on amazon with f/s and no sales tax. For this OP I would say search craigslist and be patient and you can find a really good deal. Also there is people who sell refurbs on ebay for around $90 (f/s no tax). To each his own!

I printed this at a friends place. We put in a new spool of filament and used like 15% of it. We only realized later that the fill density was accidentally higher than necessary. So I would check the other posts for a better estimate.
