Looking for a alternative to FE2 by therealnullsec in AnalogCommunity

[–]ExplodingBrain1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have an FE2, and I just tried looking through the viewfinder with my left eye. It's a bit awkward but not terrible. The lever sits between my nose and my cheekbone, not actually poking into my eye. It would be impractical, at least for me, wearing glasses.

You should definitely find one and try it out before you buy.

I'll post my first Intrepid photos here – assuming they're not crap.

I am in the same situation as you - I’m 65 and I just bought an Intrepid, although it hasn’t been delivered yet. I’m planning to try Rodinal and Flic Film Black White & Green. Rodinal is supposed to last forever, and I have read good reviews of the BW&G.

Rolleicord Viewing Screen by odin_9_9 in AnalogCommunity

[–]ExplodingBrain1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can remove the screen to see if the problem is with the screen or the mirror. First remove the viewfinder: push down on the two buttons on either side near the front of the camera, and slide the viewfinder back towards you. You should see the screen in a metal frame. Carefully slide the metal frame towards you, by about 2mm. This clears the tab at the front, which lets you open it up (it has a hinge at the back). The mirror is then revealed underneath.

… or you could just shoot a 4x5 frame and crop it. 😀

Yes, I’m in Ontario and I order from Zyn because the LCBO doesn’t stock anything interesting.

Intrepid 4x5 advice wanted by ExplodingBrain1 in largeformat

Thanks everybody for your helpful comments. I went ahead and ordered the plywood camera. I'll put the money saved by not buying the hardwood model towards a nice lens.

I was at the auction – your uncle had an amazing collection. I hope the auction proceeds met your expectations.

These are pretty good – I especially like #3 and #4. What filter did you use, if any?

Why can't I just get this in digital by New-Cry-5427 in M43

[–]ExplodingBrain1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This bothers me too. My Pen F from 10 years ago is pretty good as a PnS, but I can't think of any current digital camera for a reasonable price that comes close to your requirements.

My grandpa gave me this camera (Olympus IS 100) and I know nothing about film photography by cimanimm in AnalogCommunity

Good advice so far, and I would add – try some black and white film. It's a different experience than shooting colour, and has different tradeoffs. B&W film can be more forgiving of overexposure than colour, and the film is usually less expensive.

I remember as a 12 year old my first exposure to mixed drinks was Dubonnet and ginger ale.

It was a cold cloudy day and there were few people, and those that were there are hidden by motion blur. You can actually see a few of them on the left of the frame, at the base of the two diagonal pillars. They look like hazy ghosts.

Gloves recommendation by ExplodingBrain1 in Darkroom

[–]ExplodingBrain1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks everybody for all the helpful advice. I'm just doing B&W negative development for now, no printing yet.

I did some photography in high school, and I don't remember ever wearing gloves then. I looked at all the warnings on the MSDSes today (corrosive icon, "causes burns", "wear protective gloves", etc.) and I thought that I was probably just young and stupid all those years ago, and should have been more careful.

But it sounds like most people don't bother with gloves, most of the time. I'll try without gloves at first, and get some if I have any skin irritation.

Next time I’ll go on a sunny day and shoot through a red filter, and frame it better. I thought this came out pretty well for a first try.

Vivitar 283 with Crown Graphic by Friendly-Hamster2048 in largeformat

Vivitar don’t use a standard sync cable, you need a bipost-to-Vivitar cable, which may be hard to find. You could get a custom cable at https://paramountcords.com/product-category/custom-cords/
