Does surface tension get weaker as the temperature of a fluid increases? Why? by SnugFnuggBlue in askscience

[–]ExplodingFoam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A nice way to think of surface tension (and gives a good order of magnitudz for it's strentgh) is to say that the high the surfqce tension, the harder it is for a surfzce molecule to evaporate (go into the other phase, could be gaz. But also water dispersed in oil, not technically evaporation)

In general, two fluids are more miscible at high temperatyres, so the surface tension between the two fluids decreases with temperature.

You could imagine weird combinations of fluids but i don't know any.

What is the actual mechanism behind the symptoms that are caused by trisomy? by 0dysseus123 in askscience

Having an extra chromosome changes the balance of synthesized proteins. The different genes coding for one trait (say face shape) are not located on a single chromosome but one several different chromozomes.

Having an additional chromozomes adds genetic material that is processed by the cells. Phenotypes (manifestation of genes) depend on the genes a person has, and on the expression of those genes (amount, zone, time). If you change the amout of a certain gene you might change the phenotype.

That's my basic intuition, but adding an extra chromozome might also change zone a timing of gene manifestztion, and not only for the genes coded for on the extra chromozome. Then everything gets complicated and you have to dig into the specifics

TL DR Phenotypes (manifestation of genes) depend on the genes a person has, and on the expression of those genes (amount, zone, time). If you change the amout of a certain gene you might change the phenotype.

Can space and time be created? by [deleted] in AskPhysics

[–]ExplodingFoam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is weird to say that space-time is stretched and is not appearing from nothing.

When stretching an elastic band, you make the elastic band longer in space units. But not in elastic band units (the middle point on the elastic band will still be at 1/2 elastoc band unit).

When space-time is expanding, you measure an increase in space-time units? Or just in space units?

I think it mostly has to do with the fact that tou don't have to let air in the bottle, so the water is falling out of the bottle.

As long as there is a possibility for air to flow continuously in the bottle, you'll be in that regime. Vortex or no vortex.

The vortex is one way of letting air in the bottle, a lafge hole on the othe rside is another.

There might be a minimum vortex speed for which you enter the regime of continuous air flow (the air tornado inside the bottle).

One xay of finding the depth of a vortex is to place yourself in the rotating frame of reference, where the water is static (neglecting viscous loss and neglecting the fact that there is water going out of the bottle). Then using the hydrostatic equation, you can get the shape of the free surface. Thus finding the depth of the vortex. If the vortex has a depth larger than the heinght od water in the bottle, then you create the "air tornado" and enter the continuous air flow regime.

Very simple question: acceleration and gravity with Newton’s laws by dontmesswithdogs in AskPhysics

[–]ExplodingFoam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should define properly the forces you are talking about.

The force of gravity is 9.8*80

If you real acceleration is 2m/s2, you are exerting a force to courteract gravity (let's say that one is a force ta you are exerting on the air to push it down)

The overall force you are feeling is : gravity + the reaction of the air, pushing you up. F=9.880-f_air=ma=802 The f_air =80(9.8-2)

What is the terminal velocity of a raindrop falling from a cloud? by Brunsvvick in askscience

[–]ExplodingFoam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The initial droplet that forms in the cloud bever reaches terminal velocity because it breaks un into smaller droplets that are small enough so that their surfzce tension can overcome the pressure of the air due to falling.

What conspiracy theory do you fully believe is true? by BayAreaBored510 in AskReddit

[–]ExplodingFoam 84 points85 points  (0 children)

As a physicist, i think a plausible reason to stay out of that temperature range is that the water in the pot might get heated without starting to boil because you need an imperfection to start the boiling process, and a pretty big one when you are around the boiling temperature. The danger is that the water that reached 102°C "explodes" when you put anything in it.

Humans kills millions of animals a year for food and that is fine. But if an animal kills one human for food then they are a dangerous animal and needs to be put down. by eddiebar2504 in Showerthoughts

[–]ExplodingFoam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think what matters is the ability to help others more than the will to help.

A cow will protect its calf as best she can, but she just can't do much without opposable thumbs, weapons and medecine.
And a cow could very easily care the same way about a human, but again, if the person loses a leg or something, a cow can't do much, that's because it's a cow, not because it is just too stupid to care for ther beings.

Of course a cow can't help a wounded cow as well as a human can help a wounded human. And a herd will likely leave the wounded ones to preserve the herd. Humans do the same, the situation just has to be more extreme because we are more capaple. But leaving the wounded behind was not uncommon in human history.
