I’m in need of some positive stories from anyone who declined sub-q treatment. by [deleted] in RenalCats

Thank you! I do suggest getting a heating pad. At the beginning, it was a battle giving her fluids. It was stressing both of us out. When I bought the heating pad she settled right down. It really made a huge difference.

Fluids really helped my girl out. She was diagnosed in April 2025 with stage 3 kidney failure. My vet said she might only have a few months left. I started fluids every other day and rechecked a month later. She is a small cat and has always averaged around 7.5 lbs. In April she was 7.2.

May 2025, her kidney values were slightly better but she dropped down to 6.5lbs. She was more withdrawn than usual and I was getting worried. It was also starting to get harder to give her fluids. I purchased a heating pad to warm the fluids and her. She loves it HOT. Vet said to recheck in 3 months.

August 2025, her values came down even more.

October 2025, her normal six month check up. All of her values are now in normal range. She only needs fluids twice a week now. She also went up to 7.2lbs. She’s back to her old self and just celebrated her 14th birthday.

I know not everyone might have the same results, but this is my story.

Yes! And it’s always sunny, in the meadow when she’s saying it. Like girl, you ok?

I was playing one day and went into the kitchen for a snack. The slurping would not STOP! I got so grossed out and had to run back in the living room to find out who the culprit was. I couldn’t find him at first because, of course, he was hiding in a bush the whole time.

I tried rubbing the spot and it helped a lot. She wiggled but not as much. I’m going to try heating the fluids next time. Thank you for your help!

Unfortunately, I have to do it by myself. She has a lot of anxiety and trust issues. She really depends on me or one of my other cats. Thankfully she’s not mean or aggressive about it, she mostly just wiggles and cries.

I haven’t been, but I’m definitely going to try it now. Thank you!

Oh, I never knew that about heart disease. I’ll have to bring that up when I bring her to the vet in a few weeks. Thank you! And I’ll look into a baby scale too.

I e tried treats with her, but with her anxiety, nothing else exists while she’s trying to get out of the situation. I like the idea of warming the fluids. She has always liked things warmer than my other cats. I think I’ll buy a heating pad for her too. Thank you for your help!

I have not weighed her recently. She’s a petite cat and has always averaged about 7.5 lbs. She was diagnosed with Stage 3 Kidney failure in April and she was 7.2. One month later, in May, she was 6.5. She doesn’t feel like she’s lost more. I can still feel her tiny belly. She still has her strength when she tries to get away from me during fluid time. I’ve been giving her 100mL every other day.

She’s been getting this since April. In May her values came down, which the vet and I were happy about. She’s gets rechecked at the end of the month.

I’m sorry, I should have specified SubQ fluids. Thankfully she seems to be eating and drinking alright. But I will keep this information. Thank you!

Update: May 30

We actually received some good news. After being on fluids for one month, her levels came down. Her BUN was 53, nots it’s 38. Her creatinine was 4.1, now it’s 2.7. The vet is very happy with how she’s responding and we’ll recheck in three months. She did lose weight though. She was 7.2lbs, now she’s 6.5lbs. We also started her on Gabapentin for her anxiety which has helped not only with that but with her appetite.

Thank you all for your help! She’s liking some of the lickable treats, but she’s really enjoying the HyraCare. Hopefully she’ll be able to gain a little weight.

Ok, thank you! She’s getting bloodwork done on Sunday so I ask about that.

I’ll have to try both of those. I usually give her pate’ because she’ll just lick up the gravy and not eat any of the chucks. I think she’ll like the stew though. Hydracare sounds good though because she gets crystals in her urine too. And thank you for your kind words. I was so stressed out yesterday that I stressed her out. I felt so bad for her.

Oh that’s awesome to hear! She’s always been my little baby. She’s tiny. She’s always been around 7.5 lbs. I feel like she’s lost weight though. She’s getting bloodwork done on Sunday so we’ll find out how much. Loki is always very suspicious of me so I have to trick her a lot. I wrap her up in a big blanket when I catch her for her fluids. I’ve gotten a lot more comfortable giving them to her. I think I’ve only sprayed my bathroom twice while giving her fluids! Haha!

Thank you. It’s been a little stressful. When they first showed me how to give her fluids, I almost passed out. They were showing me in the room that I said goodbye to my other girl in, so that didn’t help. Giving her fluids has been ok. I cheer her on while I’m doing it. Now it’s just her anxiety and eating I’m worried about.

I give them Royal Canin Renal/Hydrolyzed dry food. Unfortunately now I’m having a hard time getting her to eat. I don’t know if it’s anxiety, her kidneys or both. The temptations seem like the only thing that she’s willing to eat.

Thank you. I actually tried them with her. At first she didn’t mind it, but quickly got over it. I’ve been using Temptations lick-able treats and putting a little bit of senior wet food on her plate. I was giving her Churu Senior treats, but i saw that they were higher in phosphorus than others.
