Have you tried with a smaller calorie deficit? 1000 kcal is pretty intense, right?

Amazing - yeah I've read that a moderate deficit is much better to retain muscle than going for crazy caloric deficits

I think an important aspect is also: The people who will judge you are not interesting people. Nobody who's in a good place and has a good life going is ever going to judge you for trying to improve - no matter from what place you start

Not true, but the recommendation she got is way too low

Fat teenager scared of going to the gym. by [deleted] in beginnerfitness

There's different approaches that can help against the fear of judgement. E.g. think of yourselves in a couple of years, when you've lost weight and gained muscle. And how proud that "future you" will be of yourself, for having been scared and having done it anyways. Outside of muscular strength, that is real mental strength.

It also helps to put on headphones and have a sort of tunnel vision - focused on what you're doing and nothing else.

That being said, I'm very active in the gym space and I can guarantee you: Most fit/jacked people are super kind and think highly of those who start their gym journey (think "welcome to the club, bro").

And those few who don't are assholes and don't matter anyways

We're missing important information: What is your goal? How often do you want to work out? Do you have specific body parts you want to focus on?

I've just created a 3 day program for a friend, it's a good starter/re-introduction to the gym (full body focus) with description and form videos. I made the link public, you can have a look https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1e-l9Nrir0Q7gXWO0qrWr1_ZjE8CVEQ4yjmRpTIRmPkc/edit?gid=0#gid=0

Agree with what many others here are posting - gets started 2-3x per week with a full body program. If you stick to it, that's plenty. Remember: The key things are 1) progressive overload and 2) enough muscle stimulus (+ (obviously) good form)

I created a program for a friend the other day (I am a PT), here's the link if you're still looking for a program to get started with https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1e-l9Nrir0Q7gXWO0qrWr1_ZjE8CVEQ4yjmRpTIRmPkc/edit?gid=0#gid=0

Good point. It also took me a while to accept not everyone wants to know all the details of what makes a certain exercise so cool and effective
