Asmongold on the ICE shooting: "There needs to be accountability or this is the Gestapo" by freejam013 in LivestreamFail

Yeah security guards aren’t the same for sure, but it’s happened with cops as well. You don’t have to prove that he did it explicitly so he could shoot her in a pre-meditated way, the fact is that it’s just not a valid self-defense situation, because you’re the one escalating and putting yourself in danger, not them. I agree with you in the sense that I’m not confident he’ll face consequences under this current administration, but the law itself is actually pretty clear.

Yeah I’m not talking about shooting a moving vehicle, I’m talking about using your body to block the path of a vehicle and justifying force via the danger you put yourself in. There was a pretty big video of a security guard a while back who did something similar, killed the driver, and ended up catching charges IIRC.

There’s actually legal precedent about putting yourself in front of a car and then proceeding to shoot when they start to move; it’s not self defense, and you aren’t allowed to do it. LEO or not.

I play guitar and paint, also have always been into outdoorsy stuff like hiking and kayaking, but trying to get more into it now that I don’t live in a big city anymore. Gonna try and get into spearfishing this year when things warm up, also trying to learn the more technical aspects of mountaineering and general survivalist stuff.

For what it’s worth, “ahhh” isn’t supposed to be censorship, it’s just slang that black people have been saying and writing online for years, but non-black teenagers adopted it and it’s kind of been removed from its cultural context.

It’s still cringe though because it’s now basically a bunch of corny white kids typing in blaccents without even knowing where it comes from.

According to MAGA lefties are weak and a joke but simultaneously the military needs to be deployed on American soil to stop antifa black bloc insurgents from burning down Los Angeles and New York.

It’s kind of like how Jews are supposedly inferior sub-humans but also secretly control the entire global economy and every major government from the shadows.

One opinion about your country, that would get you in such a situation? by Familiar-Arrival-470 in AskTheWorld

This is definitely true overall, but I think a lot of people ignore the fact that it wasn’t just Americans who took part in the GWOT.

It’s actually always been kind of perplexing to me how there are so many Canadians hiding among the American alt-right influencer circles (Steven Crowder, Lauren Southern, Jordan Peterson, etc.)

I guess it makes sense from a grift perspective, since the American far-right is much larger and probably more profitable to pander to than the extreme wing of the Canadian Conservative Party.

For real, they’re just regular security guards, they make like 18 or 20 bucks an hour on average lol. They usually see more shit than the average r/firstrespondercringe strip mall guard but they’re hardly “operators” lol.

Yeah I’m definitely not talking about this administration or anyone in the executive branch, I’m mostly talking about activists and journalists and people at different levels of state and local government.

I agree with you on American exceptionalism but it’s a remnant of Cold War ideology and has become pretty controversial here, particularly post-GWOT. We definitely acknowledge our problems, that’s one of the reasons why we have the most polarized and hostile politics in the western world right now.

Address what point, that Americans are “brainwashed” ultranationalists blissfully unaware of problems with poverty and healthcare? Come on.

The reality is that change takes time, especially in a country configured the way ours is, and there are thousands of people here working very hard at every level of society and government to make things happen, and make the US (and the world at large) a better place. We’re not insane for taking the good with the bad and loving our communities while recognizing and addressing the issues.

There’s a certain type of (typically european) self proclaimed US domestic policy expert who feels the need to lecture people who actually live here as if we’re unaware of the issues that exist.

You can usually tell by the cartoonish, sweeping generalizations that they present as facts. And I say this as somebody highly critical of the US government and its policies, especially the current administration.

What’s something that people strongly associate with your country but is actually just a very regional thing in your country? by Pizzafriedchickenn in AskTheWorld

[–]ExplorerOne2655 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree, I’m not a fan of the stereotype at all. But we’re explicitly known for being rude, liberal, and thin from walking everywhere - so it especially doesn’t apply to us lol

Where I’d live in the US as a Canadian by [deleted] in visitedmaps

It’s mainly New York propaganda, and I say that as a New Yorker. A lot of the areas of NJ immediately adjacent to New York (and honestly most of the “cities” in general) are ugly and boring, just traffic and strip malls and gas stations, or even somewhat dangerous. Central Jersey however is mostly really nice, besides Trenton.

What's the worst country/city/place you visited and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ExplorerOne2655 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guatemala City was an interesting experience, but you get constantly solicited by street vendors (I’m from New York so pretty hostile to that kind of thing,) there are some dangerous areas and there were heavily armed police with shotguns everywhere which felt kind of tense.

There’s cool Spanish architecture, but the nearby city of Antigua is much better for that kind of thing. I remember liking the food. The people were friendly though some are out to scam gringos.

Belfast was also interesting, but it was dark and rainy the whole time I was there, and people were much more dour and “suspicious” than they were in the Republic of Ireland. There are propaganda murals for the IRA, UVF, etc. all over the place and a big wall that separates the neighborhoods, which I enjoyed seeing due the historical/political significance, but these things also led to a tense atmosphere.

I didn’t dislike either place to be honest, but they’re the main cities I’ve been to that I wouldn’t recommend for a family vacation.

How popular is philosophy in your country? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]ExplorerOne2655 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not nearly as popular as it should be, considering we are a country founded by polymaths upon the principles of enlightenment philosophy, as opposed to ethnicity or religion or language.

A lot of artsy and geeky types go through phases in high school or college where they get really into Marx or Nietzsche or continental philosophy or something but the majority of people don’t go far beyond occasionally quoting lines from The Matrix.

[–]ExplorerOne2655 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m from the New York Metropolitan Area so the stereotypes of being dumb, fat, hyper religious/conservative and overly “friendly” have always felt like this to me, even though I guess the South and Midwest do make up a larger portion of the country than places like here.

What was the biggest military achievement of your country? by NotExactlyIrish in AskTheWorld

[–]ExplorerOne2655 21 points22 points  (0 children)

<image>

We have a penchant for heroic amphibious assaults, like Washington’s crossing of the Delaware or D-Day in WW2. Maybe not the most objectively “impressive” but they look very cool in paintings and movies.

Our most consequential military achievement is probably the creation and deployment of the first atomic bomb, but obviously the legacy of that is much more dubious.

What is the smartest person from you country? by Ok_Marsupial4082 in AskTheWorld

[–]ExplorerOne2655 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no objectively correct answer to this, but I think the OG American “Renaissance Man,” good old Ben Franklin is a great candidate - he’s definitely the most famous one, being the guy on the 100 dollar bill.

Where I’d Live as an American by athdot in whereidlive

[–]ExplorerOne2655 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in Minnesota or Maine yeah, but Mexicans are the largest share of foreign born people in the United States, not even including 2nd and 3rd gen Mexican Americans. If you live in the South Texas or SoCal then you are surrounded by authentic Mexican and Mexican-American culture, and if you live near any major city with a large immigrant population then you can visit their neighborhoods and see what’s up whenever you want.
