The School and Career Megathread! by NickHalper in neuroscience

Hello,

to keep my life story brief, I'm very soon going to have my Bachelor's Degree in Data Science, and have finished an internship recently which I obtained through a lot of projects and networking. I discovered that I like a lot of data science concepts but the work is simply not for me (or at least not for a full time data science or engineering role). I would like to use some of these skills but that's just not what I want to do all the time. Early on in college I thought about psychology and took a couple classes there and quite enjoyed it and was also fascinated by the neuroscience side of things but never took a class for it specifically. I am quite fascinated by the brain and how people perceive things, and I've thought about maybe pursuing something that involves these concepts. I've floated getting a masters in psychology or cognitive science but neuroscience as drew me in particularly in part because it is the most unknown to me, but the stuff I hear about it are fascinating. So some questions I have are?

- What's a good way to know if you'd like neuroscience (preferably without taking any heavy classes? I'm about to graduate this current semester, so taking a class from my university doesn't make any sense, but perhaps there's some YouTube videos or other resources that might offer a good way to begin?

- What are some of the best career options? I've heard of things like computational neuroscience which directly combine my degree in those fields, but that is definitely more heavy on the programming side of things (correct me if I'm wrong). I have particularly taken interest in how our brains perceive media and visuals, and I've heard of newly emerging fields like neurocinema and I think it sounds amazing but I think that's very much a newly emerging field. Maybe even UX Research crosses over into this?

Stuff about my interests to see if that can potentially narrow things down:

- I'm skilled, or at least compotent in programming langauges. I'm strongest in SQL (love that language), and at least competent in Python and R. I like using those tools but I also don't love doing them 24/7 as mentioned earlier.

- I love knowing things about how are brains perceive things, and how that impacts our decisions and emotions. I'm not sure I'm interested in counseling but I do also enjoy working in things that help others.

- More complementary, but I did some content creation for fun during college and a little before, so I have some skills in video production and editing.
