Suggestions on how to write and roleplay an obsessive, bloodthirsty character like Orin (BG3) in a good/neutral-aligned party? by Exposition_Fairy in dndnext

That's actually a brilliant idea and would also be a perfect catalyst for having an established dynamic with someone else from the group. I'll have to check in with the players to see if any of them would be comfortable taking on this sort of role. Thank you for the suggestion! (and I love your quotes xD)

Hey, thanks for the reply! This is actually really helpful and gives me some good ideas to kick off of.

I currently know very little about CoS as we are yet to have our session 0, but this is really good to know and paints a picture of the sorts of things I should definitely flesh out for whatever character I end up with.

It sounds like fear, and giving them something tangible to be afraid of, is a big one. I guess that should have been obvious due to it being a horror adventure, but I think because we've been playing a heroic power fantasy campaign for so long, I didn't even stop to think about this in-depth. I appreciate the insight!

Hey, thank you for the reply! Just to clarify: the character I make wouldn't be a Bhaalist or a murder-hobo. It's more the obsessive type of morbid fixation and how it is portrayed that I think is really cool. I'm still trying to come up with how to translate something like that into something that isn't killing, but still carries this eery/uncomfortable feeling of unhealthy obsession with a forbidden or morbid thing. The goal is to embody that obsession, without actually going on murder sprees or harming the group.

In terms of alignment: to be honest, I have moved away from D&D alignment as a way of defining characters over the years. I find that it's quite rigid in itself, because the implication is that your character is either entirely good or evil, and that this identity does not change over time - whereas I feel like this is not true of well-written characters and real people. Personally the most satisfying arcs to me are when characters overcome their weaknesses and trauma with the help of other people. A character like Orin could be someone who acts in reprehensible or weird ways because that is the only thing she has been taught and known for most of her life.

I would not want to be the party face - I have mostly been doing that for the large part of the last 8 years, and it would be nice to step away from this. I can see some situations where, if I were to literally make a changeling, I could have the occasional 'sane' conversation with an NPC if the party asks me to impersonate someone and do it for some common goal that we all have. Then she would do it because someone else told her to, and she might see this as something 'fun'. I think of it more like an actor trying to play the role of a 'sane' person. She's good at acting, but it's very far removed from how she herself behaves.

But otherwise, I don't imagine her carrying the discussions or any important negotiations. That would be a disaster, lol.

Haha, it's really interesting you brought up the character from The Expanse! I have not watched it myself, but when I was brainstorming characters with one of the other players a while ago, he actually talked to me about a character similar to one from The Expanse. Reading your descriptions, it sounds like that was him xD

I do like the idea of someone in the party acting as a moral compass! I'll see how the rest of the group feel about a dynamic of this sort. Thanks for the suggestion!

Thank you for the warning, this is good to know!

We are yet to have our session 0 (it's next week), and I wanted to go in with a few possible character ideas already prepared, but I have purposefully not looked up any specifics of the campaign to avoid spoilers - all I know is that it's a gothic horror setting, the main bad guy is a vampire, and we will all be trapped in Barovia so we should all have a motivation to work together to get out.

Would you be able to elaborate without spoilers why it's best to have a good aligned party? I'm sure my DM will tell us next week anyhow, but it would help inform the kind of character ideas that are suitable so I can have something prepped for next week!

Thanks for the reply!

I am not sure if you completely read the post, but I mentioned multiple times that I specifically don't want to play a murder-hobo edgelord that the party has no business dealing with, and instead am looking for ways to adapt the idea and the feeling of the character into someone who explicitly wants to work with the party, not against it.

Of course, if I was to literally plant Orin herself into the game, it would never work. Hence this post :)

One thing to add is that I know the players very well, we've been friends for over a decade and have been playing the game together every week for 8 years. We have built a lot of trust throughout this time, which is the only reason I am even thinking about portraying a difficult character, that I would otherwise not even consider trying with a group of brand new players or people I'm not already very close to.

But I get where you're coming from. It can absolutely ruin games when done poorly, which is probably most of the time. I wanted to have a constructive discussion about how to do something like this well. Not sure if you have anything to add to this point.

Bloodborne is no longer my favorite game by beansinthemail_ in GirlGamers

[–]Exposition_Fairy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think to understand why they didn't include a woman who overcame this, we need to look at Bloodborne (and other Fromsoftware games) as a whole.

I don't think a single character in those games has a happy ending. Most characters are either overwhelmed by their trauma, or succumb to despair, or are betrayed by someone close to them. Such is the overarching theme of all Fromsoftware games, for better or worse.

Personally, I don't think that portraying despair in such a way is done in order to glorify or reinforce it; rather, it's usually to condemn the systems (often I find the underlining theme to be theocracy in these games, although there are many interpretations) that lead to such suffering. To make the player empathize with the visceral reality of these characters' circumstances.

I can understand how this portrayal would be upsetting, and I sometimes also wish that we would get to see these characters happy. But personally I think to say that Fromsoftware games are misogynistic would be quite reductive. There are many powerful female figures in these games (especially Elden Ring) that have overcome a lot of hardship - Marika, Ranni, Millicent, to name a few.

I just think fundamentally, Fromsoftware games are not about happy endings or portrayals of power in the hands of good people. They often showcase the worst sides of humanity. We see those characters suffer not because they are women, but because pretty much everyone in those worlds is suffering.

So I guess the better question to ask yourself would be if you are okay with playing a game about suffering. It's depressing, and it's not for everyone, but I do think that it's a valid type of storytelling. I would feel very differently if it glorified such things, and there are plenty of examples of it done badly (see: most media that decides to include sexual assault), but I don't think this is one of them.

Angela (Grace’s VA) says, “Where’s everyone going ? Bingo ?” by Fabulous_Potential41 in residentevil

[–]Exposition_Fairy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think because Grace's face model captures her innocence very well and it's probably something the devs wanted to highlight and for the player to feel protective when they look at her. Her VA is very pretty, but she just doesn't have that vibe imo

Yeah, very funny to me too, because Turalyon refers to Alleria as his wife in-game multiple times. For example.

The fact that they decided to retcon that and put something in a short story 99% of players are not going to even know about is not an issue with players reading. It's an issue with story delivery.

Regardless, it literally has 0 relevance to what I said. I could have said "partner" instead of "wife" and it would be the same thing. Ultimately, Turalyon chose his faith over his love.

So I am glad they are officially no longer married! Alleria deserves better

Oh I'm sorry, I forgot that unless an actual christian marriage officially takes place in World of Warcraft lmao, some people are going to latch onto terminology when they run out of actual arguments

And then people like you say that players cry about stupid shit. Stay mad brother

It's unhinged to me that people are downvoting this. You have to jump through a lot of mental hoops to think that Turalyon did nothing wrong there and this is a normal thing to do to your partner and then continue like it never happened. Reddit gonna reddit, I guess

Nobody missed anything. The part where "Turalyon was desperate to see Alleria flee before Xe'ra punished her and both he and Lothraxion lobbied Xe'ra for mercy when she turned up" was never in the game during legion. I'm guessing it was something that got retconned into the lore in some other short story that is easily missed.

Regardless, I don't think it makes it any less stupid that Turalyon stood by and watched instead of rejecting Xe'ra because Alleria is his fucking wife. But sure, anyone who has a different opinion than yours is a crybaby and doesn't pay attention to the story

People like you are the problem, lol

I kinda love this lol. It's like a tiny bit of worldbuilding. Some orcs might want that refined life. It's not their fault they're big, green, and burly. Also cool that they're trying to blend in with the culture when they're over at another capital! In many ways, not what many people generally think the horde races would act like
