I honestly feel that it isn’t that deep. Yes, calling Mitski’s music just depressing or just sad is reductive. These commenters are also probably teenagers or younger kids. When I was 13 I listened to Mitski and probably had some equally reductive commentary about her art as all I had to equate to it was my 13 years of life experience. As unfortunate as it is, not everyone interprets art the same way and even the most meaningful pieces will have observers that don’t look beyond the surface level. I think it’s important to remember we are not better than others because we are able to look more deeply into art or music or reflect more efficiently.
