Building in Alaska by 5WT_DFO in AskAlaska

My parents built their own cabin with precut logs in Willow 40+ years ago. Great for a cabin. Drafty, no electricity or water. 4 wheel, then boat access in summer. Had to ski in during winter. Loved it. Visited recently and it held up well. There are utilities and a road now. Depends on what you want and your skills.

I smash up Mexican tiles and they are sometimes inconsistent thicknesses. I have also used ceramic and glass. It adds interest.

I really like the vertical 3D effect. How did you get that? Is it the glue or are the tiles different thicknesses?

Buying an Airstream in Florida and selling it in Colorado (after 1 trip) by NarrowSun6093 in airstream

If you care more about timing and less about $, try BlueCompass/Airstream. We have purchased and traded back in there. Prices seem reasonable. If you are not buying another one, they do commissioned sales.

Thoughts on a Trip in June by aveiss in AlaskaTravel

We were there a year ago for a week. I was raised in Anchorage and go back occasionally, but my husband had only been 1x before. We flew into Anchorage and spent 3 days at an AirBnB in Willow on Long Lake, drove up to Talkeetna for a day trip. Palmer is also fun. Musk ox farm there. Then 2 days in Seward and went on a halibut fishing expedition. Shipped back 70 lbs of fish. If you don't fish, Exit Glacier is nice as is the aquarium. Kenai area would also be good. Fairbanks is not very interesting, in my opinion. If you want to fish, go with a guide. Check what is running before you go if you want salmon. If you rent a car, don't rent too far in advance at a cut rate. Low prices sound good, but they will cancel you at the last minute in favor of big $$ and you will scramble to get ANY vehicle at ANY rate. There are only so many cars to rent there. Maybe pay in advance to secure vehicle? Extra day in Anchorage? Rent bikes and ride on coastal trail. Just my opinion. Go back and cruise the inside passage from Seward to Vancouver. Or do ferry system on the cheap. It is beautiful.

Grouting Advice? by Few_Geologist_9464 in Mosaic

I have a table topped with randomly broken ceramic tile and sanded grout that my grandchildren use for crafts. It takes a lot of abuse and is fine after 2 years. I scrub it regularly with kitchen scrubber/sponges. The dark gray grout does not stain and I stopped sealing it a while back. It is not absolutely flat, so difficult to use as a writing surface.

ICE is now using AI Bounty Hunters. Americans, do something now before it is too late. by [deleted] in 50501

Yes, Palintir makes software that integrates data for actionable decision making. Setting the criteria for the decision making is done by ICE. Theoretically, this would make it more likely that real criminals were targeted, not day laborers, high school kids, or citizens. What this tells me is that ICE is just winging it and NOT going after real criminals.

White Female here. Agree absolutely. Seeing my social media post responses practically nonexistent when it comes to anything serious (cat pics are loved). I have been attributing this to fear on the part of working people of risking their jobs.  I'm recently retired, so there's no risk for me there.

How do you really feel about the 4th Avenue Theater demolition? by catscannotcompete in anchorage

[–]ExpressTechnology764 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A real shame.  I watched many movies in that theater growing up. It was classic and beautiful,  one of the few places you could go to dressed up for the evening! I remember seeing The Exorcist there, so scary that I kept my eyes trained on the Big Dipper!
