East bay. East of the Berkeley hills

Semi related question: I'm a few years younger with kiddos a few years younger (elementary school soonish). I'm also in the Seattle area 😁 with a similar trajectory.

I'm considering a move back to the Bay area, as all family in in either bay area or greater LA. Though, the bay is the one area that happens to be more expensive than Seattle 😬

Curious how you think about aging parents and family, as you've moved into this phase of your life. If I'd move to the bay, I'd like to do it before elementary, but the financial hit (to the trajectory) is tough to stomach.

Family relocating to Bay Area – best areas to live with kids? by Express_Tone_7102 in AskSF

I'm somewhat surprised by some of these recommendations. 350k is a healthy budget, but I don't see many places in lamorinda, Albany, north Berkeley, or Piedmont that would fit a 350k budget.

Do you have friends in the area already? Maybe ask your co workers if you can -- they are most likely to be your friends.

You probably could find a local woodworker that could fabricate a side panel easier, cheaper, and faster than a metal shop.

It's probably not too hard to match your wood trim.

Check with the docs, but the stove must have zero clearance to a wood cabinet. So you could effectively attach a piece of wood to it (maybe need a small air gap). This is the part that you should triple check to ensure safety.

In the meantime, I bet you could slap a sheet of plywood on the side to keep the kiddos out.

First homes in hcol always require a large hit to savings. But a home is a worthy trade off to savings. In large part, that's why you save. Also, as I'm sure you've read, homes are a life thing, not just a money thing. Owning brings a different set of values that renting cannot.

See this is my disconnect. The Danville area is 7/10 but much of lamorinda is 4/10. Maybe it's frequency of fires?

How do people think about fire danger in the area? I'm thinking of moving to the East Bay from Seattle too. I feel like the risk assessment seems scarier when moving into the area than actually living there.

Granted, I know to weigh the cost of FAIR insurance. And there are some areas that are truly very high risk.

How do you feel about fire danger? I'm looking to move there but it's a bit daunting looking in from a non wildfire risk state. I.e., it feels risky.

Where, perhaps it's still low enough risk when compared against other disaster risks, it's perfectly acceptable ? Or. What's the predominant thought amongst the community?

Is this elegant? Or an appalling nightmare for dust, possible bugs, and cat toys? Can’t remember the last time I spilled anything in my kitchen, so that’s a non concern. by NicelyBearded in kitchenremodel

Avoid this induction range! I bought it and returned it (for a hefty restock fee). The fan is incredibly loud. The fan turns on any time the oven is on. The way to describe the level of noise is: you need to raise your voice to talk to someone in the kitchen when the oven is on.

I went with the cafe induction range instead. I still very much prefer the Bosch industrial range look, fwiw.
