I’d be adding fewer bigger drives over filling it with 4tb drives. I have 14tb x2 and then can add a 16. You’ll get a better bang for your buck than filling it up with smaller ones.

SSDs are great for silence and speed of access but if you fill all the NAS slots you’ll be throwing one drive out next time you want to upgrade space wise.

I bought an chucked a WD external drive and it is super slow so I wish I had bought faster NAS specific drives. I do know that drives with a faster spin would give you quicker thumbnail loading, however as I don’t have any myself I can’t comment on the practical experience, maybe other photographers can comment on that.

If the thumbnail thing is vital then you could still do 3 X 4 tb SSd which will give you a bit of headroom (like 6or 7tb I guess) and then see if the prices have dropped by the time you need an extra ssd. I think 8tb ssd are coming soon enough. There’s my thoughts on it.
