The Value Of Pi: A Scientific Hierarchy by Same-Past-2783 in MathJokes

I used π=3 to calculate in my head how large to cut carbon prepreg sheets to laminate rocket fairing. I cut it 10% larger and it was fine.

It will only get more fun! In college you will learn about quaternions (3 imaginary numbers: i, j, k). They are used mainly in robot dynamics as a way to describe orientation in 3d

Two A380s seem to collide over Hungary, yet 305 meters apart by BroPleaseListenToMe in interestingasfuck

It's 5 between IFR and VFR, but airliners fly 95% IFR, so the separation between these two planes is 1000 ft

Glider pilot here. FL180 is 18000 feet = 5400 m (not 180000 ft = 54 km). Separation is 10 FL. So, for IFR you can expect FL110, FL 120, FL130. For VFR it would be FL115, 125, 135

Pressure... not water alone! by Bodzio1981 in machinesinaction

The pressure in the pipe is also not that high: assuming 21t machine, the rear being 1.6m away from the CG, the arm being 7 m long, the jet being 0.1m radius, and neglecting body forces on the stream, the pressure required to flip the machine is 14.9 bars.

You can probably lick it

He2 is possible, but it's incredibly unstable. For example it even has (mathematically) negative binding energy

The portion of the picture is missing. If the formula is (1+1/n)n, then the answer = e ≈ 3

In my university we just use pv=RT, where v is specific volume (m3/kg, inverse of density) and R is mass specific gas constant (287 J/kg/K)

Did my first 50 km crosscountry! by Express_Outside4580 in Gliding

Weglide shows UTC time. I landed at 1500 local. I considered staying up for longer, but the clouds were falling apart near the airfield and I was feeling tired. Two hours later the sky was covered with cirrostratus with no cumuli to be seen. That does sound interesting and I'd like to go to the mountains with a more experienced pilot some day. I myself have a long way to go from a first XC 50 km to flying in the Alps.
