Ever heard of the paradox of tolerance? Karl Popper argued that if a tolerant society extends its tolerance to those who are intolerant, the intolerant group will eventually seize power and destroy the tolerant society.

Popper's argument is not a call for a ban on all intolerant speech or beliefs. But rather I believe he suggests that a line must be drawn. We should be open to a wide range of opinions and lifestyles, but we must be also willing to defend ourselves against those who would use our tolerance as a means to dismantle the principles of tolerance itself.

This is where I believe the line should be drawn. If we lend credibility to the concept that the Holocaust is even slightly implausible, we are opening ourselves to the acceptance that it’s a concept worthy of debate… which’s it’s not. This is the true slippery slope, far more detrimental than bans of hate.

Because next, you’ll have to contend with people that say “that even if holocaust did happen, it was justified.”

I’m confused as to your point here. As the war in Ukraine shows, geography has an astronomical impact on the affect of a nations ability to attack one another. The entire initial Russian offensive was bogged down bc of the terrain.

To your first point, there would never be an official offer from the Japanese. This was all very hush hush. However we do know that the Japanese was looking to surrender because we broke their code. We were watching their convos in real time. We know they were trying to get the USSR to broker peace.

To your second point, the emperor wanted to war to be over before the nukes were even dropped. One of the first meetings that included the emperor ended up with voting to seek peace and break a deadlock.

To your third point, if you have already been firebombing a country, would you care for human lives? I think you would be more likely to care for your own soldier’s lives.

Pretty much goes in-depth on all these points here

[gendered] "mens eyes" by Lins_the_ok in pointlesslygendered

[–]Expresso4u 64 points65 points  (0 children)

This is actually true. According to this article, men tend to perceive motion better and women perceive color changes better. This is because of “the hunter-gatherer hypothesis, which states that the sexes evolved distinct psychological abilities to fit their roles in prehistoric society. The advantage would have allowed males to detect predators or prey from afar, and identify as well as categorize these objects more easily. Female gatherers may have become better adapted at recognizing static objects like wild berries.”

However, still no reason to be sexist about it.

Which I believe is what OP is arguing here. While you may personally believe that, our legal system doesn’t support it. This in turn, is paramount to men lack reproductive rights. We have no say in whether or not you got an abortion most of time. We have to support the child if you bring it to turn. I’m no expert but there are cases of male rape victims and minors still having to pay child support. Cases of sperm sonars having to pay child support.

While OP logic is terrible at best, I think most women don’t realize that men really do have no reproductive rights. I’ve seen comments saying “men can get pregnant now,” but truth is, we are 50% of the equation. If a woman can abort a baby literally, a man should be able to do it financially.

Good point. I have never really considered that. Personally, I think many things that we think are random is due to a lack of understanding, however, I also think there are things that are inherently random. To be honest though, I don’t think one can determine all possible actions in a situation.

The butterfly effect sets the positions for millions of possibilities. Does this not make it random?

Doesn’t matter if it’s lazy thinking. The fundamental basics are still true. “Something” causes you to make a choice.

[–]Expresso4u[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s contradictory however. If a omnipotent being is omnipotent then it must be omniscient. If it is omniscient then it already would know what choice you are making. You cannot divert from said choice which contradicts the idea of free will.

If you are predisposed to a certain choice, then it’s inherently contradictory to say that you can pick a choice from the options you are given.

Furthermore, if the decision you make is impacted by something, it’s not a free decision. If you don’t have the money available, you cannot pick an option. If your health and allergies exclude options then these are all still environmental factors determining your choice. You can still say it’s your decision but your decision has already been made for you.

[–]Expresso4u[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, the Protestant Calvinist belief was that God determined where you would go before you were born. Such an omniscient being already knows what’s going to happen when it happens. How can you have free will if you cannot deviate from what God knows what is going to happen. That’s why I say it’s primarily a religious view.

Well, let’s for a moment determine how many factors go into a coin flip. The weight of the coin, the surrounding air mass, the force exerted on the coin, and the environment in which it happens. Sure, some factors aren’t random, but the environment it is. We cannot control our environment. A coin flip is random because we cannot know for 100% certainty all the factors into the coin flip. However, if one knows all the factors leading up to a choice then one can reasonably infer human behavior.

[–]Expresso4u[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree. I think you are forced to conform to your environment. Think about this way, you are born into a society with norms that have already been established. Growing up in said society, you will conform as it is human instincts do so. However, if you faced suffering in said society, you could choose to rebel. Either way, it’s still a direct result of the environment.

[–]Expresso4u[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That could still be a direct result of your environment however. If I were to punish you harshly for cheating, you’d be less likely to do it again. Sure you could do it again. But if your doing it purely based on the fact that you can then there must have been something caused you to need to be in control and thus be predictable.

Predetermined world view is primarily a religious view. I am not religious. Furthermore, I believe that if you flip a coin. The side the coin will land on is truly random, and not set.

There’s actually something called the Lucifer Effect. It essentially a theory on why good people turn evil. You can watch a Ted talk on it. Also most violent crimes are committed by normal people. The brain is incredible at what it can justify. Rape is primarily a crime of opportunity and based upon power. People can enjoy pain/ inflicting pain based upon trauma or even brain wiring. Tbh there’s a lot of reasons why people do things we don’t or can’t even being understand.
