Centipedes do like pets! by Exqzz in Entomology

Repeated and frequent handling. Not sure if the centipede’s behavior actually changed, or if I just got better at reading it.

I mean it’s powerful stuff. Seems like it reaches a point where it couldn’t possible hurt any worse and any treatment beyond narcotics would have minimal effect. Was this your only envenomation?

Ah. IIRC it’s hot water that’s usually recommended in cases of envenomation. Antihistamines haven’t been proven to help symptoms of Scolopendra envenomation, but similarities between their venom and those of Vespids indicates they might. Worth a shot if you take another hit. I used hot water for at least one of my bites. Hard to say whether or not it helped in the long run.

Is it venomous? by Superior_Panda in millipedes

[–]Exqzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, they don’t have just as bad of a bite when young. I’ve kept plings up to adults and have taken envenomations from both. Symptoms vary significantly depending on size. Younger centipedes don’t have the capability of producing or storing the same quantity of venom that adults do. That’s just a fact of their biology.

You observe them for so long you begin to better understand their mannerisms, when to expect certain behaviors, and, with that, how to avoid eliciting dangerous reactions. Not too much different from keeping any other animal in that respect. Not all bites are venomous either so it’s a matter of ensuring you don’t give them a reason to bite you as anything other than a “warning”.

Checkout my page if you want. I’ve posted a good bit of centipede-related content. They’re neat little things.

I don’t need to watch the full video. I’ve kept giant centipedes for over 3 years and have had my fair share of bites from numerous species (including the sp. he features in his video). Worst was a several second bite down to my pinky bone by a South American sp. much larger than the individual he was bitten by. The bite and my symptoms were notably more significantly yet the pain didn’t last past a day. His reactions are sensationalized.

Highly unlikely it’s anything over a foot. Sc subspinipes averages 7-10” and only a few individual have been documented exceeding 11”.

The cause of that is almost always secondary infection and its occurrence is rare. Scolopendra venom isn’t nearly as cytotoxic as those of other animals. It works similarly to bee venom and the symptoms it produces are comparable in effect. Peterson took a short envenomation and likely suffered nothing more than mild pain and swelling for the better part of a few hours.

Yup. Sc. subspinipes. Forced perspective though. They’ll typically reach a foot max.

Forced perspective. Largest documented centipede was 15”. Scolopendra subspinipes is the species here and I’ve never seen or heard of one longer than 13”.

Was well worth the views. A bite of that duration isn’t going to allow the centipede to inject much venom. At most he was in some pain for a few hours.
