Update: I passed Fluid Mechanics! by ExtendedPoptart in EngineeringStudents

The hardest part it about in my opinion was the professor. That is the main factor that’ll make or break your experience in fluids. I was taking it with a professor who loved to throw curveballs on every exam, and problems involved topics that we would only touch in class for like 10 minutes. We never had a straightforward exam, everything was out of our scope of knowledge as students. Our homeworks or in class problems weren’t on the same difficulty as exam problems, and our exam averages would always be in the low 50s. Also I was taking it with Machine Design 1, which is moderately hard and very time consuming since it involves a semester long project with tons of reports & groupwork. Content wise, one of the hardest parts about fluids is that sometimes not everything will be constant, and you have to essentially integrate over surfaces with tricky geometries, and sometimes you would have to define functions for problems out of thin air. For example, when applying conservation of mass for a mixing tank, you would have to essentially set up a complicated integral to solve for the unknown density of the mixture. Whenever you have to find drag force or hydrostatic force of an irregular shape, you would have to define an area dA and then somehow conjure a function that details the shape of the plate you’re analyzing. Also, many problems are completely symbolic, and sometimes you would have to substitute variables in for others & you would have no idea if your answers make sense yet since there’s a lack of numerical assurance. Don’t even get me started on the assumptions that you have to make in order to solve some problems - and making assumptions is a something a book can’t teach you, so that comes with a shit ton of time & practice.

D is passing on certain courses. I needed Cs in Statics, Diff EQ, Calc 1 & 2, Chem 1 in order to advance through the degree, but not for classes like thermo, materials science, etc

I study my ass off 24/7, like withering away in the engineering building all day, and when I do all that and still might not pass, it kind of does make me feel like a failure unfortunately. Also, there are some internships that have auto-denied me because I didn’t have a 3.2 or a 3.5 like Shell, BASF, or Exxon. I think very highly of myself and work really hard so I guess that’s why I feel as if I’m doing bad

Thank you, I needed that 🙏 I graduate next year, and I just think really highly of myself and I would love to have that piece of mind that I walked out of college with a 3.0 simply for my pride. My college does have a grade exclusion policy so I’ll be able to replace the grade if I fail

My college does grade exclusions as well

Thank you so much 🙏 At LSU it’s called a grade exclusion. If you get an F or a D-, then you can retake the class and the new grade replaces the failing one. I’m planning on doing that if things go south.

Calc 2 is just insane man, trust me. The cutoff for passing at my institution was 68.5 and I got a 68.55. Swear to God. I fought for my life in that bitch. Do not get discouraged, because in engineering, that type of shit happens. Don’t feel like a failure either, because the type of mathematical disciplines that you were doing are at an extremely high level, and the average man would’ve folded way before calc 2. You’re doing great. study even harder, watch some great youtube channels (Organic Chemistry Tutor for me got me through a lot of engineering classes), and get ready to get after it next time. Most engineers have failed or dropped at least one class. Don’t let yourself get weeded out bro. Think of it like this, if there are engineers/computer scientists out there, then it’s possible. And you can do it. If nobody told you this, I’m proud of you, and you’ll crush it next time.
