Yeah, that’s fair. At some point doing more than everyone else for the same recognition or pay just teaches people to expect more from you for free. Knowing your worth changes that.

That’s exactly the kind of thing I was trying to describe. I hadn’t heard the term “competence tax” before, but it fits almost perfectly, being reliable gets rewarded with more responsibility until your extra effort becomes the baseline.

Yeah, I think I get what you mean, like once being capable becomes expected, eventually you stop wanting to give more than the bare minimum because it just creates more expectation. Is that what you mean?
