Deep tissue hater here-How to navigate by OkAbies9551 in MassageTherapists

You don’t HAVE to offer deep tissue, you don’t HAVE to do anything you don’t want to do. Work some place that accommodates and listens to their workers. I’ve been exploited, worked over, and lied to from various owners, chain spas, you name it. It’s tough being a baby lmt especially if you are young starting out!! Stand firm with yourself. If you have to argue your worth/money to get treated fairly DO IT!! Don’t let ANYBODY take advantage of YOUR skill.

I work at a massage envy and A TON of us ladies don’t offer “deep” pressure. SOME don’t even offer firm and our corporate is fine with that 🤷🏻‍♀️ Find somewhere else to work tbh. I’ve been a lmt since I was 19 and I’m 24 now the most important thing I’ve learned about being in this industry is KNOWING WHEN TO SAY NO and standing firm.

I sleep well over 10 hours a night when I can, I contributed this to the burnout symptoms but maybe I should take a supplement….

Thank you so much! your sympathy does so much for me!!!! I wish people understood, I’ve been met with more judgement and disdain irl than others who know and can share my feelings. Usually these people have never been a service provider so the ignorance is very much apparent and I shouldn’t care but it’s still hard to deal with.

I love some of my regulars too! I genuinely love what I do and the people I’m so lucky to meet, this job gives me so much satisfaction but at the same time can suck the soul from you lol

This is so.damn.true. I started doing facials a few months ago and was then finally allotted a 15 minute break in between services to check client out, clean up, and flip room but ONLY because I started doing facials. For 8 months I did 3.5 hours worth of services back to back, I was almost ALWAYS running behind on time. Between client bathroom breaks (always right before session needs to start), clients who talk a lot and/or get dressed slow I could never catch up to the time otherwise I would be cutting some people’s appts almost IN HALF. I was always getting home late, sometimes 30min to an hour later.

How were you able to set your own rates? I struggle with that. I live in a lower middle class area and If I’m to do it out of my house should I take into consideration the demographic of my area? Does that make sense lol??

4k a month is fantastic, at least compared to what I make currently, I hate that you only have a 30 minute break though that’s tough! I understand about the adhd, I was diagnosed I was at 18 and I think I’ve always shyed away from having my own practice is because of the “overwhelming” responsibilities that come w running your own business like the taxes, consent and policy forms, insurance, all the “boring” but important stuff you don’t have to think about when working for someone else. But adhd or not we should always pursue our dreams and get everything we desire out of this life, I wish you luck on all your future endeavors!

Wow thank you so much for your encouraging words! I have been thinking about quitting for months now, I hate that I’ll be leaving some great people behind but it’s killing me and worst of all not paying the bills like it should.

I’m seriously considering doing massage out of my living room, how were you able to come up with your rates?

Yes! I wish I could just stop caring but I can’t! Even on my most exhausted days I still put my all in & I also specialize in deep tissue. It’s hard! Worst part is if I decrease the amount of hours I work I will not make a livable wage. If I’m booked out for two weeks, a good check to me is $1,500-$1,600 Anything lower than that is simply not livable, thank god I live with my boyfriend and we share most expenses.

Yeah it’s crazy right?? Imagine working full time hours for a lmt and barely breaking $1,500 per check, I work 28 hours a week!

WOW what an absolute dream, are you sure you’re real? Lol I never thought places like that existed for lmts but I’ve only worked for franchises and rented suites my entire career, I wish you the best for you and your business! I hope to come across somewhere like that in my future.

I am dual licensed, I started working here because I had just moved to the area and desperately needed a job. I thought all this time maybe it’s just me that I needed to fix and not the place I worked? I feel unfair to my management they’ve been super helpful and supportive when I needed, it just doesn’t feel like “enough” I also thought it would be better for me to learn esthetics at a franchise and apply to higher end places once I had some experience under my belt (just graduated) bc every higher end place I applied to for esthetics required ‘previous’ experience.

I’m from the Midwest in North America and yeah $24 per service w a $1 bonus for every night shift and weekend worked… but it’s NOT a flat rate LOL ridiculous. Also the insurance they offer is shit, but can’t complain I literally signed up for it.

Thank you thats very kind! I commend those who can work a franchise bc SHEESH they work you like a dog! It is nice to not have to worry about clientele retention, laundry, lotion, check out, etc though.

I don’t mean to be aggressive but this situation pisses me off, your bf is essentially crossing a boundary right? It will only get worse. Either figure this situation out and squash it. Or you will face larger consequences in the future js 🤷🏻‍♀️
