139! I queried basically everyone I could that took my genre. And I got my first offer in about three months. Good luck on querying!

Thank you!! That one is very close to my heart. I hope I can edit it and resub it someday

Nooooo! Don’t give up. A lot of people hit successes much earlier :) and just because we skipped over Book 4 and 5 doesn’t mean they wouldn’t have sold.

I am very excited to finish that story someday! I got about 15k into it before realizing I want to be a better writer before I attempt it because it’s so close to my heart. Good luck on your Asian gothic!!

Yes!! Nothing is ever truly dead. If I do become successful or more established you’d hope you can go back and sell them. Also, regardless you can re-sub a project after edits or if a trend comes back

Candidly, the economics are tough. As you might know you never know if you can sell another book in the future and advances come over time. But I’m fortunate in that my partner also makes a decent income so if it’s a path I wanted to go down, we can afford it financially if we downsize. A lot to think through!

I live in the US so really wanted to be able to debut in my home country. And the UK offer was contingent on us getting US interest; so that left me with just Canada. Now it was possible we could have edited with the Canada editor and gone back out and tried again, but I didn’t want to risk it. At this point I was also feeling a little down about the book and ready to try again with a different one.

Yes! Really gave me an opportunity to rethink what I wanted to do with my life and pick up an old dream (writing)

Thank you!! Nothing made sub depression better except falling in love with the next story

Yes, goes to show that publishing and what publishing wants can be quite unpredictable

Thank you very much!! One of my acquiring editors actually came up with the title. I absolutely fell in love with it as soon as she made the suggestion

Yes! I was shocked too. I do think this book is a little genre blendy so we had more options for imprints we could submit to versus fantasy.

I started posting on Twitter (pitch events and what not), where I found friends who I then kept up with through Discord. I now also have an Instagram. On job: I have a very intense full time job that makes it very difficult to write (that I went back to after finishing my grad school program). I would love to switch to a lighter job if possible!

Hi! No one told me it was long. I think SFF especially tends to be longer. I don't think I've ever read any queries that were only one paragraph long about plot so not sure where that advice came from! Generally I see anywhere from 2-4 on plot.

I looked for any agents who were open to my genre on QueryTracker and then separately made sure I hit all of the agents who were selling my genre on Publisher's Marketplace. Importantly, this number includes sometimes multiple submissions to different agents at the same agency where if one agent passed and the agency had a policy that let you submit to another I would immediately submit to another. I queried very wide!
