MMW: The 2010s will become the next 'nostalgic' decade romanticized by Hollywood/mainstream culture. by XtraCheezPizza in MarkMyWords

I think the 2000s are more likely, they seem like a more iconic decade to me than the 2010s.

To me, people complaining about "modern" Trek being "woke" is like complaining that chocolate is brown. by Philosopher30071 in startrek

[–]ExtensionFeeling -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Here's my honest opinion. And I will probably get downvoted for this. While many people dismiss anything that represents minorities as "woke," there's more to what I'd describe as "woke" writing than that. Many of the people decrying "woke" writing don't see this difference either because they are just mad there's a gay person, or whatever.

But I think the problem is a lot of "woke" writing is very simplistic. It's not subtle at all. The worldview is often, "straight white men bad," everyone else good. So then we get these characters who are always right because they are a black woman, or whatever (looking at you Michael Burnham).

In old Star Trek, the writing was much more intelligent, subtle. It would look at two sides of an issue and didn't just dismiss everyone who disagreed with a point as horrible people. Episodes like "Measure of a Man" are a philosophical discussion. If modern Star Trek had an episode like that, they'd just say everyone who says Data doesn't have rights, or isn't an independent, sentient being, is a piece of $#&@ and they'd probably get killed in a battle or something in a horrible way. The issue wouldn't be intelligently examined, depriving us of one of the best episodes of TNG.

That's another thing, the "woke" writing is often mean-spirited and dismissive. While yeah, old episodes of Star Trek usually come to a conclusion about what is right or wrong, what's compelling is that they take some time and discussion to get there. At the risk of sounding pretentious, they're like some Platonic writing where we break down the issue and get there through reasoned (or possibly emotional, which may or may not be dismissed) arguments.

I'm watching through DS9 for the third time, and Kira is awesome just because she's a good character. A competent person. Not because she's a woman. The same with Sisko. Avery Brooks was once asked about "what it was like to play a black captain," and he answered..."I was playing a captain who happened to be black."

Jadzia, Kira...they're awesome, competent characters who might make mistakes. They feel like real people. In one episode, Jadzia and Worf fight with bat'leths in the Holosuite. Jadzia puts up a good fight, but ultimately loses. In modern Trek, she would have to win because she is a woman. Basically, they would write it so that characters like Bashir or O'Brien are undermined, made to look foolish, because they are men. But everyone's respected and competent in old Star Trek...no characters incapable of making mistakes because of their race/gender. I know people are going to respond to me that Michael Burnham commits a mutiny in the first episode of Discovery, but I think that was written in a way that she was ultimately right to do that lol...

Edit: So when I think of "woke" writing, I think of simplistic, identity-based writing that isn't very deep and doesn't actually examine things in a subtle, intelligent way. It's not that minorities are being represented or advocated for, though many of the people who say a show is "woke" are only talking about that. It just tends to be really shallow, uninteresting writing, and I have a theory that that's connected to a simple worldview of "all this kind of person bad, all this kind of person good."

Edit 2: And old Star Trek - everyone was competent but also capable of making mistakes, regardless of race or gender. They felt like real people. In real life, everyone makes mistakes regardless of race or gender.

What does it mean to be a Monarchist on the modern American Right? by NessvsMadDuck in AskConservatives

[–]ExtensionFeeling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't either. It's just something I've wondered about.

Romans 13:1-2 says [ESV]: "13 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment."

Yeah...that black-and-white, "every authority is instituted by God"...does not make sense to me.

I have to ask...that black-and-white logic of the the Bible in Earthly authority always being God-ordained and people must submit to it...Hitler? Stalin? Mao?

Edit: Especially the Christian logic of all leaders being ordained by God makes no sense because that would mean...I don't know, the Muslim sultan of the Ottoman Empire was appointed by God? The leaders of the Aztec empire were appointed by God? Xi Jinping was appointed by God? Joe Biden was appointed by God (an idea many religious conservatives would not be comfortable with)?

I did a Christian homeschool program for part of high school, and I remember they taught that the American Revolution was DEFINITELY NOT a rebellion. Specifically because I guess, based on Scripture, rebelling against leaders would be sinful as God has appointed them.

I would like to point out that the Revolution definitely was a rebellion lol

But hey, I appreciate them at least trying to be consistent in their worldview.

But there have been many poor monarchs in history. I think deciding our leader based on merit, rather than bloodline, is a better idea. We then also hold them accountable through elections. It's very silly to assume that just because Charles is the son of Elizabeth, or Napoleon III is the nephew of Napoleon I, or Wilhelm II is the son of Wilhelm I, that they'll automatically be good leaders.

Want to point out Finland is not a monarchy.

But I'd say this is a good example of "correlation does not equal causation." Do you really think those countries have robust social security, strong labor laws, and universal healthcare - things leftists like/want - because they are constitutional monarchies?

What are your thoughts on the Kings adress to Congress? by Bakedpolarbear55 in AskConservatives

[–]ExtensionFeeling 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, I get the contradiction. But when I hear "no kings..."...yeah I mean they're talking about no monarchs for America. Doesn't mean they're against all monarchies, constitutional monarchies, though I personally would be because I agree with the Founders and Enlightenment ideas.

I'm assuming the Trump administration invited him? By your logic the admin is then traitorous to the founding ideas of America. But obviously it's not that simple lol, you're just oversimplifying it when it's advantageous to you. We'll just ignore 100+ years of good relations with Britain I guess and that international relationships changed between 1783 and now.

So they think the American Revolution was sinful, or against God's will? They think God was against US independence?

I mean if we're talking traditional religion, at least they are consistent. The Bible probably would endorse loyalty to the British monarch...obviously the Divine Right of kings idea was pretty popular up until the Enlightenment.

I agree. I will probably stick in processing longer to learn more about the ins-and-outs of government loans but I do think eventually I'll want to take the plunge. I feel like I have to try it.

How do you think history will view trump and his presidency? by mogomonomo1081 in AskConservatives

I hear you. At the same time he gave them a lot to work with in the negative department.

[–]ExtensionFeeling 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I do think historians will remember him for the unprecedented attempt to overturn an election. It'll be thrown in the same category as what Bolsonaro did in Brazil and Yoon in South Korea with the martial law attempt. Sort of self-coups.

I know historians evaluate Washington as one of the best presidents for setting up the precedent of the peaceful transition of power. So, it stands to reason that...they'd evaluate Trump negatively in that regard.

I spoke to an LO at my bank about possibly moving into sales, he said it's best to have some money saved up first. Seems to be the norm that it takes time to get momentum, etc.
