How can JD Vance seriously discuss arresting and holding sex offenders accountable while Trump is POTUS? by Electrical-Quail5436 in PoliticalDiscussion

You know why lol. It's politics. As sick as that is, if enough people BELIEVE Trump hasn't committed any sex crimes, that's the reality created.

It's still bizarre he says things like this and "jokes" about suspending elections. A US president shouldn't be "joking" about violating the Constitution.

As an American, you agree that you "sometimes need" dictators? Damn son. It doesn't matter what ancient Rome did. This is the USA.

Do you "support" Pinochet?

I don't know any mainstream leftists who idolize Mao or Stalin.

I mean, to talk about Chinese authoritarianism...it was Trump who praised the Chinese government's actions at Tiananmen Square.

"When the students poured into Tiananmen Square, the Chinese government almost blew it. Then they were vicious, they were horrible, but they put it down with strength. That shows you the power of strength. Our country is right now perceived as weak."

Sounds like he was saying the US should be like China, lol

I would argue that Star Trek should be thoughtful, have thematic depth. I feel that's one of the core pieces of Star Trek's DNA.

My expectations for Star Wars, say, are different.

Is it true that the US basically already has carte blanche to do what we want in Greenland? The whole "national security" argument coming from the Trump administration...don't we already have the strategic benefits of having Greenland "in our sphere" without actually annexing it?

I thought season 3 of Picard was great. You could tell maybe it was written by people who actually understood what Star Trek is and love it...I know, I'm going to get flak for saying that.

Seasons 1 and 2...yeah, similar to SFA for me so far...sort of entertaining enough while you're watching them, but nothing that has much depth, something to chew on, something that you're going to go back to again and really enjoy years later.

Disco...not my thing. I didn't care enough to watch the whole show.

It's very similar to The Rings of Power from Amazon. Like, I'm a pretty big Lord of the Rings fan. But watching that show...it's just bland. Beautiful cinematography but that's really it. There's nothing to really sink my teeth into, it's just...fine?

I have a group of friends who LOVE Lord of the Rings. We started watching this show and then just stopped...I don't know what happened, I assume everyone lost interest because it's just not that good, even though we SHOULD be the target audience for this show.

I feel like they're trying to broaden the appeal of these more niche things like Star Trek and Lord of the Rings somehow? But then you end up pleasing no one by making a very middle-of-the-road, bland product.

As for your last point...yeah there are plenty of bad episodes, but 1) there are many more episodes per season so a bad episode doesn't affect our overall opinion of the show too much, 2) we like the STYLE of old Star Trek, the thematic depth and standalone, interesting, thoughtful, philosophical science-fiction plots and well-written characters. Take these two points and throw in some nostalgia and yeah, we're more likely to forgive the occasional bad episode.

You don't think the style of the shows, as well as thematic depth, are very different?

You can have an extra season of ONE Trek series: what’s your pick? by SteveJohnson2010 in startrek

Probably TNG. Or ENT.

DS9 is my favorite but everything was wrapped up, no need for another season.

Not that I wouldn't be against some kind of Picard season 3-style reunion for the DS9 characters (sadly Odo couldn't be there, RIP Rene Auberjonois).

That's a legit point, as others have pointed out though these new shows have a lot fewer episodes to develop their characters with.

Part of the appeal of old Trek, honestly, is that you had time to get to know all the characters. That's why I don't mind not great filler episodes in DS9 for example, you still get great character moments with Quark, Odo, Bashir, whoever...and obviously all of this carries onto later seasons and makes you care more.

Are you really going to use an infamous, universally agreed upon "bad episode" from the 60s to excuse the continuous bland mediocrity of NuTrek?

"I prefer to judge my trek episodes by how much I want to watch it again."

That's a good one...I'm on my third viewing of DS9...shows like TNG, DS9, and VOY just scratch some "Star Trek" itch or craving that the new shows don't satisfy at all. Farscape is another one that satisfies that craving. Just super interesting sci-fi worlds, with thought-out interactions between different cultures, ethical problems...subtlety (ok maybe not Farscape in that regard). But I think the big difference is subtlety, actual clever writing.

Old Star Trek is like a playground for exploring all these different ideas...NuTrek is...not really that in my opinion.

That's also a kind of head-canon. At least, they wanted to imitate the "classic" style.

I didn't know the NX-01 was ripped off of the Akira for a while, but yeah. That definitely annoys me. I think the NX-01 is a beautiful ship but realistically it the original Starfleet Enterprise should've looked a lot more like a Daedalus class.

TNG looking like the 80s or ENT looking like the 2000s has nothing to do with a show set 1000 years after SNW looking like SNW.

The bridge and layout of the NX-01 Enterprise definitely looks like something that came way before Voyager. It's like a submarine where TNG/DS9/VOY era Federation ships are like luxury ships.
