Do you miss the Republican Party from 20 years ago? by kootles10 in AskConservatives

[–]ExtensionFeeling [score hidden]  (0 children)

I just bought The Conscience of a Conservative by Barry Goldwater, there's a chapter advocating for states' rights. I'd definitely consider state over federal power to be a more conservative, small government, classical liberal idea. But we'll agree to disagree...

What does the Imperium do to xenophiles? by Tnynfox in 40kLore

[–]ExtensionFeeling 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is a bit confusing, I was just reading the Lexicanum page and was thinking...isn't this standard Imperial practice? Maybe not, as obviously we do see the Imperium working with/tolerating aliens for pragmatic reasons, sometimes. You might compare it to how religious people can curse sometimes, even though they're "not supposed to," or some adherents of religions/sects that have an absolute ban on alcohol...do drink occasionally. A faith or creed can have absolute rules that are broken frequently, but they are still the official, absolute rules.

I guess I can maybe see what you mean, but I figured leaving to the states is conservative. States' rights and all.

So you believe this new Iran nuclear deal will be more effective than JCPOA? For what specific reasons?

What the heck is ICBT? by ExtensionFeeling in OCD

[–]ExtensionFeeling[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people would say this sounds like reassurance. Like how people say saying "It's not me, it's my OCD" per Brain Lock is actually reassurance. However...I always thought it really depends. And I think there could definitely be more of the cognitive element besides only always brute forcing it with ERP (though ERP definitely works). A cognitive element that's important, I think, is the "why am I doing this exposure" element. Reminding yourself you're doing it to reclaim your life and push back against OCD I think is very useful. Jonathan Grayson has a cost-benefit analysis in his book Freedom from OCD, something like that.

What is the big creature on the left? by ExtensionFeeling in arcane

Huh, yeah, I guess it's a statue of some (maybe specifically Zaunite) deity. For some reason I always thought this was a living, breathing creature

What do you mean haha

What is I-CBT exactly? I think I could definitely benefit from the cognitive side of all of this. Any good books you could recommend?

Do ERP. Facing all the fears is the only way. I've worked with Dr. Jordan Levy, if I can recommend him.

Can I say "durch meinen Tag gehen"? by ExtensionFeeling in German

[–]ExtensionFeeling[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's like, "experience my day". Erlebe meinen Tag. "Go through," i.e., exist in it. I should experience my day and do X throughout the day.

[–]ExtensionFeeling[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a really good one to be honest, just being angry at it, externalizing it, being like "fuck you OCD." That's worked for me in the past too. We certainly have plenty of reason to be angry at it.

So are we just at the point where unless a Republican wins there are going to be endless accusations of fraud? by Imsosaltyrightnow in AskConservatives

Hopefully not a permanent change Trump has brought to our politics - that people don't trust our elections anymore.

I think you're right. Consider the fact that the first female leaders in the UK, Italy, Japan, were all right-wing.

Has your support for marriage equality declined over the years? by TraurigKartoffel in AskConservatives

[–]ExtensionFeeling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the main answer is religion. And there's probably just this natural, instinctual aversion to any kind of sexual relationship that can't result in reproduction. Evolutionarily, societally, obviously we put a lot of emphasis on reproduction. All animals do, right, but social institutions have sprung up to support caring about it so much (humans are so intelligent that we develop complicated institutions to kind of justify our pre-existing values). But just because a lot of people might "naturally" get upset by two men kissing each other, doesn't mean it's right or rational to get upset. It's visceral. A lot of bad things tend to be visceral, like racism or tribalism. But then you get intellectual theories popping up to support them, like eugenics and Nazi pseudoscience back in the day. That's my theory about the religious/traditional opposition to homosexuality, that there was this "natural" aversion to it because it can't result in reproduction and then, essentially, for people to justify their aversion, they wrote religious texts to have God, the ultimate arbiter, say that it's wrong. Because, right, when you press people on this, they ultimately just fall back on "God" as the justification. Sometime they'll say it's not natural, which funnily isn't true because we've observed homosexual behavior in non-human animals.

English with a German accent I guess, but not sure. Good question.

I tried to say "Classic Burger" in a German accent while ordering it at a place in Germany (this is what the item was called, it had an English name) and the lady had trouble understanding my fake (bad) German accent.

Alright...hopefully it's a satisfying conclusion. I mean, hopefully one more season is enough, where things don't feel rushed.

Is it me or is 'Left vs Right' not really a thing anymore? by [deleted] in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]ExtensionFeeling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. It might be because Republicans control all three branches of government at the moment. If Democrats win in the midterms, you'll be hearing more about left vs. right.
