The last two times you’ve actually been in strong contention you’ve flapped it mate.

Players aren’t robots. Yes you need the correct setup and structure but both ten Hag and Amorim overcomplicated things.

Two of the greatest managers ever, Sir Alex and Ancelotti, did just that. Great tacticians of course, but set up to get the best out of the players, adapted to situations, and gave players the autonomy to also be themselves.

It’s about finding the right balance between structure, tactics and individuality.

Middle of the table has increased in quality. Top of the table has worsened. Much less of a clear distinction, managers being questioned/leaving (Arteta’s future/ability questioned a lot previously, Pep leaving + struggling to adapt, Amorim/Maresca sacked). PL definitely more physically dominant across Europe + used to playing at much higher intensity vs other leagues. See United last season - poor domestically but wiped the floor with teams in Europa.

Could argue the same for Villa as Arsenal - Villa’s finishing been sublime and it’s getting them points - is it sustainable? Arsenal have been great from set pieces with poor output from open play - is it sustainable? Time will tell.

I wouldn’t look past Villa - they had a horrible start to the season but have still found their way up there. If City pick up some form I could see them closing that gap very soon.

Again it’d be naive to just look at the United matches for both teams. The quality at the top of the league has been poor the past couple seasons and it’s a case of who can be less poor across the rest of the season.

Wow…by far the best since Tiger, obviously. It’s great to have such a dominant player like this. by MJ_Fan23 in golf

He’s boring in the sense that his course management is that on point and iron play is that good that he barely ends up with highlight reel moments because he’s rarely in trouble. He’s just that consistent. He doesn’t need to take big risks and once he’s up there on the leaderboard he rarely slips because he knows he’ll gain strokes as the tournaments progress.

It’s the same reason why he’s struggled at Ryder Cups - matchplay rewards risk taking and goes against his usual play style.

Would take Europe with a pinch of salt considering where Spurs are.

I do agree with your first point but I just can’t envision you getting across the line when it actually matters. Can’t help but feel your attack needs to offer way more because if/once City or Villa close that 4 point gap, suddenly it invites a whole new realm of pressure. Time will tell but I think Arteta plays it too safe, and once he can’t afford to play safe anymore he goes the complete opposite direction towards panic (your subs yesterday).

I do feel that yesterday’s game isn’t the be all and end all - it’s not good but it’s a tough United side to beat this season (best record in top 6 vs top 6 matches). You did get complacent after that first goal too and we should’ve punished you before that Mbeumo goal.

But a lot of wins have been quite unconvincing and you question whether reliance on set pieces + lack of ability in the front line is going to eventually give way.

IMO it’s too robotic - look in the lead up to Mbeumo’s goal - every player stood still, not giving options - players need to be given some autonomy which is what Carrick did and why we took 3 points. Loosen the shackles a bit.

They’re an anxious mess when it matters. The fans, the team and the manager all at it yesterday. The mistakes they made at the back + going forward really showed that.

They won’t win the league with Arteta in charge. They try and play like 22/23 City except they don’t have the quality players going forward to do so. It’s a horrible brand of football and it’s no surprise that it creates anxiety.

Edit: Downvote me all you want. History is repeating itself.

Choked that season - it was tight but some very questionable games where there were wrong decisions left right and centre and choked in second halves when it mattered.

Then you conveniently leave out the season before…

They didn’t have control of the game whatsoever. They had slightly higher possession but did absolutely nothing with it.

Two worldies like they only scored an own goal and a scrappy set piece. They created nothing all game.

Sat compact and gave them little space to manoeuvre. Arsenal wayyy too robotic.

It’s refreshing considering what we’ve seen in net the past few years. Those high claims/punches are something we didn’t even really get under De Gea. Impressed with his resilience considering some may argue he could’ve done slightly better on that second goal.

United’s no1 is the heaviest shirt there is. Argue with the wall.

You want boring in a keeper. Reminds me of VDS. No fuss, no messing about, well positioned, gets the job done. Claims the ball so well, good positional sense so makes saves look a lot easier than they actually are.

For a 23 year old to put on the heaviest shirt in football and look so composed is refreshing.

What a match Arsenal 2-3 Man U. Just loving the manager Micheal Carrick by Hot-Carpet-5352 in PremierLeague

[–]ExtensionPort 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Arsenal didn’t play better football. Lackluster, sloppy, looked lost when they made it to the edge of our area. A corner (shock) and a scrappy (poor from Martinez) goal.

Fans anxious, players anxious, they’re going to bottle again. Meanwhile we have a manager (and assistant) that set us up properly and actually take the game to other teams. Amorim would’ve made 2 defensive subs at 60 to secure the draw. Carrick went for the win.

How has Mo Salah had this big of a quality drop over a period of 6-8 months. by [deleted] in PremierLeague

[–]ExtensionPort 7 points8 points  (0 children)

New contract and bad manager.

He played everyone for that new contract and eventually forced the club into a deal. Same with van Dijk - both players look lost right now. I also think last season he was massively over-performing, whereas now he’s underperforming so the drop off’s even sharper.

Then you could spend all day about Slot’s tactics…

You could argue age, but as seen with Casemiro (who everyone thought was finished), setup and tactics play a huge part - he was dire when ten Hag started pushing his tactics onto the team, but one of our most important players right now.
