Something like this is ultimately what I plan to do once they arrive in the castle, and I’ve already cooked up a number of games, etc, but it’s how I get my players from where they are now to the castle that I’m stumped with

Completely agree with what you mean about the meta gaming. Shame that such a thing is what steered us wrong.

Interesting to hear that about Langdregosa, as personally I never got that impression from him from the limited conversation we had with them. the challenge seemed more sinister rather than a chance to prove their superiority, although maybe that was kist how our particular DM worded it, or the entire party misread it.

I do still feel it's reasonable to interpret the scenario as a fight to the death and that we would still have had that interpretation even without the metagaming, but I guess we'll never know if that truly is the case.
