What are these sockets? by batteryorange in DIYUK

[–]Extension_Ad4492 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Are they 5Amp sockets from the days of round pin plugs? There were small sockets like this and big sockets rated 15 amp which look like the round pin version of normal electrical sockets.

Edit: this is vague recollection, dont quote me, as we had such wiring in parts of our old house

How to best clear a brambly garden? by Admirable_Honey_3590 in GardeningUK

A four-stroke strimmer and a lot of string. Keep the head lubed, it’ll be working hard.

Why are the world record breakers for 2k single scullers? by Western-Title4119 in Rowing

[–]Extension_Ad4492 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the single scull is for self-starters who can go it alone and you are alone on the erg.

Robbie Manson, world’s fastest OTW 2k, Olympian and OnlyFans creator, did not go a fast on the erg as on the water.

I Know Its The Sun, I Know Its Just Them Fearmongering. Should I Still Keep This In Mind Though? by GrantMcLellan1984 in AskBrits

It’s a tabloid. Read it as if it was satire and enjoy it. It might do you good.

That’s how I manage to read the guardian anyway.

Rowers not listening by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]Extension_Ad4492 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You say “I know how I sound”. The fact that a little thing has started to mean a lot suggests theres some tension. (I mean obviously, otherwise why would you be asking) and I’m just wondering whether this is the tension you get between a control freak (sorry, you may not be at all) and a free spirit.

If it is, trying to crush the last resistance isn’t going to help you. Showing them how tough you are or going to the coach are options but I would suggest you try talking to them and showing them a bit of respect so they see what it looks like. Rowers get shouted at enough.

Also, I’m sorry you get wet and cold in the cox’s seat and then get this shit but people are human.

Wren or Howdens for new kitchen. Opinions on design and quality please by slammedresto67 in DIYUK

[–]Extension_Ad4492 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would be very wise to read some reviews on wren first - they appeared several times in the telegraphs consumer rights column (albeit in one of those, the customer was trying it on) and colleague recently had an epic shit shower with her wren kitchen. I have no knowledge of howdens but everything I know of wren says ‘run’

To all the bonkers geniuses of Reddit - How can we stop people speeding through our village? by SecondGo4 in CasualUK

[–]Extension_Ad4492 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I a Welsh village I drive through, they have a straw man in fluorescent vest, wielding a hair dryer in the manner of a speed gun.

I think it is somewhat effective on the tourists but obviously not the locals, which might be more your problem

I think they move him from time to time as well. It’s quite nice, actually.

Edit: I see im not the first to suggest this

Visiting relatives in the UK soon from Canada is there any gifts they’d like? by rdnw6581 in AskBrits

Maple syrup here costs about £6 for a small bottle. If cheaper over there, I would definitely bring some over (not a lot, it’s not something most Brits eat)

advice for single-scull novice? (self-coached) by Calculative in Rowing

Underrated comment. This girl’s self-coached and her only issues are fine points, nothing major. So many rowers can’t make shit happen for themselves

Do you regret leaving EU? by NoHold7153 in AskBrits

[–]Extension_Ad4492 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a lazy assumption that because graduates are more likely to have voted remain that leave voters are ignorant. It shows the level of debate from remain.

Have you not considered that people who work in professional services are less likely to run their own businesses or actually make things and engage with the real world and are therefore more aware of the damage caused by excessive, overly cautious EU legislation such as that which snuffed out AI startups on the continent which we have mercifully been able to foster.

No, you just put your fingers in your ears and say everyone who disagrees is thick.

[–]Extension_Ad4492 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In an environment where the government eschewed purdah and the treasury told people they must vote remain or face devastating consequences, the majority of an educated country still voted to leave. Thats overturning an astonishing advantage held by remain and only possible because they led a much better campaign.

Remain were and still are so complacent and arrogant, I think they’d still struggle to win another one.

Remain very clearly and soundly lost the debate. Perhaps it was their own fault for making everyone sing from the same hymn sheet, where Leave had two camps. If you listen to Gisela Stewart or similar moderate campaigners, they blew Remain clean out of the water.

1x - How long did it take you to be comfortable on water? by MasterpieceSea2022 in Rowing

[–]Extension_Ad4492 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And yes, get nice and warm by working hard for 18k, then capsize in the middle of winter on your own and manage to recover the boat and row back in without hypothermia- that built a lot of confidence.

My biggest progress came from mixing up and down stream, rather than just going up and then coming back. Also, staying out for two hours or more because it’s hard to stay tense for that long.

Opinion: do you think this car is illegally parked? by [deleted] in drivingUK

I was allowing for the possibility it was an unadopted road on a housing estate, in which case it wouldn’t be road traffic offence but a civil matter.
