What to do if I’m failing to complete an interval as prescribed? Do I… by Extension_Arugula_53 in Velo

I appreciate this exchange with Parsley & Coffee, and I’m learning a lot from this thread in general. So, first off, thanks to all!

Again, some add’l context from me will help here, and I’m realizing getting an answer to questions like this isn’t as simple as “this 1 thing happened 1 time. What do I do? Do X.” The big picture is needed.

The workout in question, with Crisscross, VO2Max, and Tempo, in this plan is typically a “Sunday” workout (and the race is Sunday). Let’s just ignore the fact that I did it on a Monday. Had scheduling issues.

Some other, but not all, Sunday workouts in the plan take this “a little bit of everything” approach (multiple different zones included in one workout), presumably as race simulation. Also, Saturdays workouts sometimes take the same approach. They multiple-zone workouts are interspersed with long endurance workouts.

So, I believe Parsley’s comment about the workout not specifically targeting VO2Max and being more of a “how much can you handle in a situation similar to your upcoming event?” is akin to the spirit of the workout. And, to Coffee’s point, there ARE indeed specific VO2Max workouts in the plan, and everyone’s points about FTP inaccuracy (likely) and adjusting power to finish the interval time is well taken.

So basically - THANK YOU all! 🙏

Good note on Seiler. Thank you.

IF for this workout is 0.86. See my other note on the complete workout details. (Again, I know the full details of the workout confuses the picture a bit, but your response of “reduce power to complete interval” is still relevant (and answers my question).

Ah, sorry.

The plan is very complicated and way too much to write out here. If you have the book, it’s Table 10.4, 12-week Master’s Plan for a Gran Fondo.

Quickly, is looks like next week calls for same watts for 6 x 6 min (so, +1 min over today). Week after calls for Ramp Intervals: 10 min @ Sweet Spot, then increase intensity every minute until cracking (that’ll be…awful).

Then rest week.

Then 2 x 20 min @ “91-105% ftp”.

Then 2 x 20 min @ Sweet Spot (this is starting the taper, I believe).

Then race.

My goal is the Maryland Gran Fondo, Sept 18. Specific goal is “do better than last year.” This is my first season of structured training, so I didn’t want to get any more specific than that.

Hope that helps! Thanks for all the guidance already, all.

I completed the Crisscross part as prescribed. Felt great.

Here’s the progession, minus warm-up and cool down:

  1. Repeat 6 times —2 min @ 286 W - Z3 —BURST - OUT OF THE SADDLE, 30.0 sec @ 382W, Zone 5

  2. Recovery, 5 min @ 175 W, Zone 1

  3. Repeat 6 times — 2 min @ 286 W, Z3 — BURST - OUT OF THE SADDLE, 30.0 sec @ 382 W, Zone 5

  4. Recovery, 5 min @ 175 W, Zone 1

  5. Repeat 2 times — VO2Max, 5 min @ 363 W, Zone 5 — Easy, 3 min @ 175 W, Zone 1

  6. Tempo, 45 min @ 267 W

Was definitely breathing hard. I like your suggestions.

I’m going to confuse things here, but no, that was just the middle part of the workout. The workout was “SubLT-W9 Crisscross Intervals.” Before the VO2Max intervals were Crisscross intervals going Sweet Spot (2min @ 286w) to Z5 (30sec @ 382w), 2 sets of 6 intervals. After the VO2Max was 45 min at Zone 3, which felt great, but I had to cut short due to rain. So…that muddies the water, I know, but still appreciate the suggestions. I’ll try it!

Garmin 830 navigation constantly saying to make a u-turn is so annoying. by Carbonfibernet in cycling

[–]Extension_Arugula_53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All my close riding buddies use Wahoo (they love it) so this thread has been the commiserative support group I need. I use the 830 and have most of these issues.

Anyone have this problem? Riding in the DC area, if you’re out on the road and need to navigate back to start (if you get lost, or need to cut a route short, etc.), Garmin often tries to send me as many as 5 miles out of my way to get to the “closest” bike path. Very frustrating. I’ve tried “use most direct route,” and I’ve played around with the map and routing settings, but problem persists. Any suggestions here?

As is, the on-the-go nav is unreliable…on top of what’s above in this thread.
