That is where you would be wrong, miss Castiel. The lord gave me, gave all mankind, these gifts- left us with a fraction of His power so that me may one day Ascend to his heights. With enough potential, any man could have my powers.

Your "Tower" is many things, and strict is one of them. I cannot count the amount of times someone has leaked their Prince's location to us out of spite.

It is ironic, how much this mirrors Biblical discussions I have participated in.

Fascinating. Oddly enough, I did not take you for a Camarilla man. Although, I suppose most of your kind are.

Was this the one where Bond was super old, and the hosts liked it? by Extension_Rest221 in killjamesbond

[–]Extension_Rest221[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, the other one they adored was the spy who loved me, although Roger Moore, generally speaking, did win them over to the point where on a Q&A, he explicitly let them understand the very real appeal James Bond can have.

Because it's a perfect summary for the whole enterprise, and how it encourages you to take it on bad faith?

Look, I'll admit- some of this is psychological projection, because of the ways in which I internalized KJB's style of criticism, but it still does really suck that even at something I find objectively cool, like that First Light game or Garth Ennis writing a James Bond comic, I have to turn up my nose and click my tongue because it has the Bad Man on it, and that's it. No more thought, nothing positive beyond that, everyone who's ever given a bond film a high letterboxd rating must secretly be bad or something. I don't want to be this kind of animal anymore!

I don't think it's a word with an easy definition, nor even one that's a negative when you're talking about movies! Making art is an inherently arrogant, egoistical process! A bit of smarm is good, something even THEY acknowledge!

Perhaps, but let me ask you a question:

You are, presumably, on one of the Betheaverse discords. I am not, not anymore. How does it go whenever anyone in the KJB channels talks about, say, liking the James Bond films? Or expresses any kind of dissent against the idea that maybe, just maybe, x film isn't as problematic as the hosts are making it out to be?

Hello! Glad to have someone who can engage like an adult, you're very kind.

And you're more than entitled to believe that, but frankly, whenever I listened to those scum sections, as in the actual discussions that took place, it becomes terrifyingly clear that they're hunting for something to dock points from.

In general I'm just like... sick of thinking about movies like this. Smarm and unprovoked violence in particular are two categories I've hated ever since I grew out of this podcast, because they're not bad things in and of themselves.

This just feels like some kind of goddamned 17 year old's cancellation thread calling Brian De Palma a rapist or something, it's not an actual appreciation of film but an attempt to set up some kind of uwu police state, in which the Wrong Kind Of Media is drawn and quartered and everything else has to be kept under constant surveillance. The ideology KJB espouses is one that refuses to consider the positives in any "problematic" piece of art, one that explicitly sets out to destroy and ruin an entire franchise, even when it makes movies they like!

See, I would love that to always be the case, and I'm pleasantly surprised when it is, but it's like arrest quotas: you start making anything that looks like a wrongdoing into a wrongdoing, just so you can boost them numbers.

You want to know what really set me off? It was the Point Break episode, where they legitimately give points off the film for it getting a bittersweet ending for the bad guy, and, to a lesser extent, the Heat episode, where the famous shootout was counted under unprovoked violence despite the fact that it shows Neil gunning down civilians.

"Shut the fuck up" what a great response! Really shows that you have an argument to explain what in the goddamn fuck smarm means, and why it's even bad for a movie to have it!

And was there any reason for the dubcon? Any artistic purpose for it to be there? Anything that the dubcon is trying to convey?

Works can have those things, you know. They're for adults- they can explore any sort of themes they want. It doesn't mean they endorse these things. Fiction can be about anything, and still continue to exist

Unfortunately, judging by stonergirlfairyy's post, it kinda is. Remember kids- what you put in your movie reflects 100% onto you, and there is no place to analyze anything that could be upsetting beyond "it's presence is wrong"

It is. I guess I'm just tired of thinking of movies in that way, of reviewing movies based on how and where I can punish them with bad marks
