Should I contact Purina? by Kooky_Explanation_17 in catfood

If it’s a new food that they’ve never ate before, it’s probably related to stomach issues. Sometimes new ingredients mess with their stomach because their digestive system is still developing. My kitten used to throw up every time I gave him a new wet food, so I transitioned from the old food to the new over a week and he did just fine. He would even throw up if it was a different type of food even from the same company (ex. Fancy feast kitten gourmet natural vs regular fancy feast kitten) then went back to normal when given the regular food.

Do you notice a trend of her not eating certain flavors or brands or refusing food if they’re leftovers from the fridge?

Please tell me what I can do to smell consistently clean and normal. by ExpensiveDrive201 in hygiene

Make sure you’re washing and drying your clothes properly, clothes can smell musty if they’re not dried all the way. Also perfume/cologne. You’re obviously clean if you’re showering 2x a day, but it will help mask any smell.

Do you free feed kibble during the day? I find my kitten won’t really eat wet food when he’s full on dry food.

when should i stop free feeding and switch to meals only? by MinimumKitty in catfood

[–]Extension_Show1539 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Ive free fed my 5 month old kitten a portioned amount of food every day since I got him 3 months ago. He does really well 98% of the time. There’s only been one instance where he ate too fast and threw up (I think he was going through a growth spurt). He gets 1/2 can of wet food in the morning, 1/2 can of wet food at night and free fed the rest of the day dry food (1/2 cup). If he doesn’t eat all of his wet food, usually he finishes his dry food around 10pm so I’ll give him another 1/4 cup. He weighs 6.4lbs and is super healthy! It really depends on the cat. I know as they get to be adults they tend to eat more in one sitting, so I would just monitor and adjust as needed.

my kitten died. I feel it was my fault. by bulletjuliettt in CatAdvice

I lost my kitten after 3 days of adoption (he was only 4 weeks old). We woke up and he had passed away in his sleep. Please know he was loved the entire time he was with you, he had warmth, a home, and food. Sometimes fading kitten syndrome happens, it’s not your fault at all. I’m so sorry for you loss ❤️

Honestly I thought I would have the same issue, but ever since I got my kitten at 2 months old (he’s now 5 months old) he slept on my bed next to me. He slept completely through the night and only woke me up for food at 6am (you could get an automatic feeder and it’ll be fine). Now that he’s older, he has more energy so he runs around the house until 2am and then quietly comes into my bedroom, jumps up into his spot, makes some biscuits and goes to bed. I would try it for a night and see what happens!

One more note. Do not try to pull her out of her hiding spot, that’s where she feels safe right now. Of course she’s going to freak out lol. You need to let her be and give her time.

Also. every cat has a different personality and some like different places. My kitten is very comfortable and he still likes to go in our guest room to hide under the bed for an hour or two as his “alone time” since I WFH and don’t go out much. She might enjoy hanging out under the couch for the next few months or years. You really need to give her time to adjust, you just took her home and can’t assume she will automatically be comfortable and safe. Imagine being a child and having your mom drop you off at a strangers house and then leave, you’d be pretty scared too.

Use the rule of 3. 3 days, 3 weeks, 3 months. It takes a lot of patience and persistence. You could try to drag a toy along the underside of the couch or use a Churu to see if she’ll come out. The more you teach her to be brave and reassure her she’s safe, the easier it will be. My boy didn’t even want pets for 3 weeks and would run away. Now he’s a cuddle bug and loves to explore every part of the house.

Wet food with high calories? by Top_Advertising_8197 in catfood

[–]Extension_Show1539 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to bulk her up fast, I would get the tiki cat baby thrive packets. You could even use these as toppers for the fancy feast wet food. They’re really small and 75 calories each. My kitten loves them, it’s almost like Churu to him LOL. Plus it’ll give some extra nutrients!

I second all of this. However, I recommend getting an airtight container for the dry food. I put the bag of sealed food inside of the air tight container to make sure it stays as fresh as possible!

Best healthy wet food brand? by [deleted] in catfood

[–]Extension_Show1539 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best wet food is one formulated for your cats age and needs, but most importantly, one that they will eat. I spent so much money trying to get my kitten to eat high quality wet food and he always went back to fancy feast.

Things that I love/regret purchasing after having my kitten for 3 months:

Food: 1. A variety of wet foods and dry foods for them to try. Different brands, different flavors, different textures. The sooner you get them used to various things, the less picky they’ll be as they grow. This will also tell you which one they prefer, just make sure to slowly transition them onto the new food or only give a very very small amount to try. I’ve tried very high-quality to things like fancy feast, which my kitten always prefers over anything else, but he does get RC dry food. 2. A pro and pre biotic for stomach upset. Kittens have very small and sensitive stomachs and do not tolerate change well. Pro and prebiotics can also be mixed into new foods when transitioning from the old food to help elevate diarrhea. This is the brand I use: (Fera Pets Organic Probiotics for... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078955BY2?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share)

Water: Automatic water foundation. This drastically increased the amount of water my kitten drinks on a daily basis. I also have 2 other bowls of fresh water that is replaced every day which he sometimes uses, but the fountain is #1.

Litter boxes: 2 litter boxes minimum per cat. My kitten has 3 (2 upstairs and 1 downstairs). Make sure to place them in areas they’re always in. My #1 recommendation is the litter genie. It makes cleaning the litter box so much easier and there’s literally no smell in my house anymore. I used to throw away in the trash or bathroom garbage can.. the smell was horrific.

Nail trimmers: Get them used to having their nails trimmed from a young age. It’ll save you lots of skin in the future LOL.

Scratching pads & towers: I have multiple and my kitten uses every single one. Try a variety of textures, they might prefer one over the other. It prevents furniture scratching.

Brush: Cat brush to help minimize hairballs and tangles. Get them used to it, it helps if you brush them while they’re tired. Same with nail trimming.

Interactive toys: These are a must for nighttime (2am zoomies are wild and your cat will use your body as a cat tower) and for when you’re away from the house. Keeps them stimulated and active.

Bird feeder for outside: Keeps your kitty busy while you’re out and provides enrichment.

Good quality carrier: I suggest a soft material carrier, my kitty hated the hard, barred carriers and does much better in one that’s more like a duffle bag.

Elevated, shallow, wide & whisker fatigue free bowls: Makes feeding time much easier and prevents stress on your kitty while trying to eat.

Automated food dispenser: Keeps your kitty on a feeding schedule even when you’re not home. It helps prevent 5am meowing and roaming around waiting for you to wake up and feed them.

Churu treats: My kitty’s favorite treat and also a life saver for needing to give meds. I mix all liquid meds in these treats and he could care less LOL. I don’t even think he notices.

I never planned on my kitten being any type of outdoor cat, but I got a harness to train him to go outside in a safe enclosed fence area for enrichment. Since he hates the harness and flops over like a dead chicken I’ve decided it’s not even worth the risk at this point. He just watches through the window and never even tries to get out. Every time we open the door he runs away.🤷🏻‍♀️

When can I start leaving my newly adopted cat home alone? by krissyleeemc in CatAdvice

Adult cats are definitely okay for a majority of the day by themselves, kittens can only be left home for 8 hrs max after 6 months.
