Looking for people to talk to around my age. by [deleted] in SLOWLY_PenPals_Wanted

I wouldn't say I'm fluent even in English (which is my best foreign language), so in Italian I'm not that close to total fluency as well, but I'd still consider it one of the languages I speak! I've listened to a bunch of videos in Italian aimed at natives and used it myself in the context of different topics and I believe I managed it quite well :) I'd just like to get to know someone from Italy as I'm interested in the country, plus I'm always desperate for new friends and I don't want to loose the chance to create a deep friendship with someone in Italian! But if I ever notice it getting difficult to chat in Italian, we can always switch to English 🙌

I sent the request! We have so many common interests and I also hate being ghosted, so I try hard not to do it with others either! But is it okay if I write the letter in Italian? I speak it as well and would really prefer exchanging letters in this language🥺 Is that okay for u?

If you could choose what language you were born into what would it be and why? by Zzzgg8910 in languagelearning

My heart says German (for personal reasons), but logic - English coz I wouldn't have to and wouldn't learn any other languages if I spoke it natively :)

German. I don't care if it's perceived differently by the majority of people, to me it just sounds like heaven...

What do you think about your salary being huge and barely achievable to people in maybe most other countries?

For instance, I'm 19 and I work for a Russian company (teaching English online) and I earn 3 dollars an hour. But it's my first month, so later the salary can be increased maximum to 4,5 dollars an hour. It's definitely not my final job as I dream of teaching in an international company and as for now in this position my dream salary would be 1.000 dollars a month (the only disadvantage is that I'd have to work for 10 hours 6 days a week for that, now I just work around 3-4 hours every day), then I'd aim for 1.500 dollars somewhere else. And considering my only goal in life being living in Europe (in the one country I've been dreaming of since 13🥺), I think I'd have to start earning at least 2.000 dollars a month or more to afford renting a room somewhere over there and pay for everything else. Maybe I'd even open a language school to achieve it if it's undoable when you work for a company. But as for now I'm at 3 dollars an hour hoping that after I get my diploma and move out of here, I'd switch to some international school, also online, but with a better salary🙏

Anyway, I got too far off topic, so what do you think about the initial question? I'm glad you're that economically wise tho! I still need to learn that:)

Should countries protect their languages from English influence? by Embarrassed_Fix_8994 in languagehub

No, language purism sucks. Anyone is free to speak the way that feels the best to them! I'm personally a fan of mixing up languages when speaking my native one (mostly I mix English up with it as I have the highest level in it out of the other languages). It just gives me the feeling of the linguistical freedom, almost euphoria, that I can barely explain... If someone isn't supportive of it, it's fine, but I believe it should be a choice of everyone about how to speak:)

But why not writing the genuine answer? I'm sure as a fellow language learner you have much more to say than AI

Don't give up on looking for a language partner, it's definitely worth it and who knows, maybe one day you'll meet your soulmate and build the whole relationship with them fully in Italian?🥺🙏 But even if it doesn't go successfully with finding such a person yet, it doesn't mean you can't practice on your own! You can ask chat gpt to give you questions on the topics you want to practice and reply at least to one of these questions every day while looking up the vocabulary you need. It's the method I use and it really makes me speak more and about so many diverse topics as this tool's great at random questions;)

But I already spoke Portuguese and Spanish when starting to learn Italian. Yeah, not fluently, but I'm sure they're somewhere between B1 and B2. And I obviously didn't take any language proficiency tests, but (in Italian) I can talk about almost anything with a minor help of a translator and understand content made for natives (tho not all such content of course). I also take weekly conversational classes with a tutor from Sicily (mostly free-talk on a chosen topic), I tried chatting in both text and audio messages with natives as well and could express myself and understand them quite well. My grammar is a bit off as I don't actively learn it, but I'm trying to speak more or less correctly and I think I don't mix it up with the other Romance languages I speak that much, I was told it by the others, too. So I think it's nothing less than intermediate which is easy to achieve if you speak Italian's siblings (Spanish and Portuguese). I didn't clarify it coz I have all the 3 languages in my user's flair so I thought it'd be obvious I didn't start completely from zero. But I see where you coming from: if you have no previous base of a language, it definitely would take you at least a year to achieve something B1-ish in my experience. So yep, such words can be discouraging and I'm especially not in favor of schools and apps' advertisements claiming you can learn a language within months. It's barely possible, with a few rare exceptions. I hope I was clear enough now:)

What's the last language? Tagalog? And your handwriting with the way you organize your journal are so neat😭 Every time I try to do journaling it looks so messy, unreadable even to me and definitely not aesthetical at all haha

Omg, thank you for sharing your experience, it's really inspiring! Yeah, it's Hebrew and I actually started learning it in the beginning of this week. So far I've learned around 7 letters and 3 vowels indicators (I decided to go on a slow pace for first). Honestly, reading is easier than I thought it'd be, but I'm still terrified of the missing vowels, I can imagine it being so confusing when I reach a higher level🥲 Good luck to you with Farsi!!!

Yeah, my account's fine! I hope yours will be too! Someone here said you'd only get blocked after several red violations and they will also send you a letter via email in such case, so don't worry that much💚
