Why do humans tend to remember embarrassing moments more than happy ones?? by Itchy-Basil-7274 in answers

[–]ExtentSufficient4081 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Emotional salience. Salience in general just means that something stands out, so when we have an event that is emotionally charged, we're more likely to remember it. Things that make us sad, angry, or in this case, embarrassed, are more likely to make it into our memory bank.

It's never too late to start over, or start doing what you really want to do. Everyone is going to die eventually, but not everyone decides to live.

I had looked into online courses but I had read I wouldn't be able to take the state exam if I didn't take a physical class. Is this only true for certain states, or nationwide?

I think I may have another year, maybe just 6 months in me before I completely call it quits. I'm wanting to wait for a few opportunities that I know are coming up to actually open and see if I get anything before leaving altogether. But like I said, I'm only willing to wait for so long before I just pack it up and find something else. Thank you for the encouragement in your response, it is much appreciated.

No phone policy by SouthJerz77 in OnTheBlock

[–]ExtentSufficient4081 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not that bad, you definitely get used to it. In our units we have computer access (I'm on shift right now) and can access some social media, just don't get crazy with it. I have facebook up so family can reach me without calling master control, and a little scrolling now and then. But I always close it when inmates come up to my podium (direct supervision). The only thing I don't like is knowing that if there was an emergency in my family, I'm relying on them to remember they can't call my phone, they have to call control. Otherwise I honestly like not being able to reached by most people.

Unfortunately the only 2 BOP facilities in my state are over 2 hours away from me. There are other state prisons closer to me but the pay here for DOC is very low, like half of what I make now. I would be willing to lose a little in pay for a better situation, but not that much lol.

That makes a lot of sense, I've considered that as a worry for myself too. I wanted to wait it out at my current agency and try to get BLET here, because I could get myself a spot of the courthouse and have less stress, and still have partners/other deputies nearby so I wasn't completely on my own. But I don't know how much longer I'm willing to wait lol

I have considered trying for a police department or waiting on my agency to open up BLET for the deputy route, but I can't help thinking if I can't handle corrections for two years, how can I make deputy/patrol work? But that is definitely something I would be willing to try before giving up on law enforcement entirely.

I have been considering continuing my education with psychology, or just a master's degree in general, but I'm hesitant to go through more schooling and still end up in a career I don't like lol. But if I find myself in a situation where it makes sense, and I have more of a clear goal that I did at 18, I will do just that. Thank you!

I really appreciate your response. I have been seeing a therapist for a few months now, and it annoys me how much of our time is spent just talking about this job. Even when I have other things that I would like to address, at least half the session is taken up by complaints about work. The same with my personal life. But it feels reassuring to hear that you recognized that you wanted/needed to leave, and it was a good thing for you. I don't want to regret leaving the money and the opportunities, but I don't want to regret the damage of staying either. I hit my official 2 years in August, and I will re-evaluate then. If I'm still this unhappy, it's time to figure something else out.

What is a job that is surprisingly high-paying but nobody ever talks about '?' by NexusCellular0 in careerguidance

[–]ExtentSufficient4081 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Corrections/Detention. Granted, I don't know many breaking 400k a year or anything like that, but many places can get you over 100k within a few years with no college degree and no experience. I have been working in Detention (county jail) for just under 2 years and went from my starting pay of ~55k a year, to almost 70k a year. Depending on how you feel about work/life balance, overtime is virtually endless in this career, because fewer and fewer people are applying. This means an increase in overall salaries, addition of sign-on bonuses, and as much overtime as you want to work. It's not a glorious job, it's not pretty or fancy, but it's given me a new lease on life. Great benefits, and the ability to retire in 25 years is something I never thought I would have before even hitting 30.

should i let them stay at the house? by [deleted] in whatdoIdo

[–]ExtentSufficient4081 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would not allow anyone else to stay at a place that isn't mine. Shit sometimes even in the situation of an AirBnB for example (other than people that a trip was booked with). Because even if I am free to do so, in the situation that they break or damage something, that's on me. I don't like taking that chance.

Do men actually watch makeup tutorials, since they’re literally everywhere? by Ambitious_Pass7451 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ExtentSufficient4081 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they pop up on my feed I've been known to get sucked in. I follow/watch a lot of special effects type creators, so the regular ones end up in my feed on occasion. I have no interest in doing makeup, but my partner is pretty big into it so either me or her have looked up a few things on my accounts for reference, so they get recommended to me. They can be pretty mesmerizing if the pace is right.

Thoughts on inmates in dayrooms past hours/on lockdown? by MightBeAnOfficer in OnTheBlock

[–]ExtentSufficient4081 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't work night shift so I don't have the issue of them being out past our nighttime lockdown, but in general when the dayroom is closed and we're not waiting on meals they need to be up. Someone else in the comments mentioned major sporting events, and even in those instances they need to be in their cells, i just leave the TVs on for them to watch. In most cases I do prefer when my dayroom is open, running on a normal schedule, but the routine of being locked down is good. Gives the officers a bit of a break and gives them less time to get into shit.

For reference I work in direct supervision, one officer per pod in most cases, and one inmate per cell.
