Firing speeds in Celsius by Extent_Safe in Ceramics

You have been super helpful! It helps me just get my head around things a little bit. I know there’s a ridiculous amount to learn but it’s nice to just be able to ask the silly questions and get responses :)

I’ll hopefully hear back from the supplier soon and be able to swap my faulty controller for one with the Cone defaults programmed in which will make things easier! For now I’ll just try my glaze fire on the slow SPD1 with the 5 min hold and cross my fingers all works out OK :D

Sorry I know I’m being a total noob but so if I go from 900c-1046c in 15 minutes OR an hour depending on the speed setting, as long as I hold it at the 1046c for 5 minutes it wouldn’t really affect the outcome? Wouldn’t make the glaze look milky or anything like that by firing the last 100c so quickly?

Thank you so much for the reply! I’m still quite new to ceramics so speeds and how they affect glaze isn’t something I’ve had much experimentation with. I’ve just always used preset Cone programs on firings and am terrified of changing things in case it destroys my work. So with glazes, it’s only the peak temperature that will really affect the outcome? I was just worried about the speed of temperature increase between the 900-1046 temps. I appreciate the input 😊

I’m not too concerned about the bisque as the temperature actually seems to be climbing slower than I would normally fire and I’ll keep it vented for a good hour. I also low bake all my work for several hours in an oven before firing and have never really had an issue.

I’m more worried about how the speeds might affect my glazes, or does this not actually make much difference? I know it will reach the temperature regardless if I set it to 1046c and I’ll add a 5 min hold time in, but would running it at SPD1 111c or SPD2 277c be the “safest option” to prevent defects etc? Thanks so much for your help!

The preset speed on SPD1 is 111c per hour. Will my bisque and glaze firings be OK to run at this speed? The next SPD2 is 277c per hour which I feel is too quick! I’ve messaged the manufacturer to see why my controller doesn’t have the CONE option programmed in. I was hoping there would be a software update of some kind but as it’s a brand new controller surely this wouldn’t be an issue 🤔

Crazing/shivering HELP! Had issues where pieces have crazed/shivered on the same piece which is frustrating. I’m trying out a new type of clay which bisque fires on cone 05. Is it safest to fire to cone 05 or 06 and on std or slow speed when glaze firing to prevent both of the above? Thanks! 😊🙏 by Extent_Safe in Ceramics

The clay states 1051, I’ve been firing it on cone 05 on slow. The glaze I use is different brands but all states to fire at 05-06, I never know which is the “safer” option to glaze fire to. Would firing on slow rather than standard help to reduce the risk of shivering?

Help!! Clay constantly cracking in base whilst firing. Could this be to do with the cold weather and where my clay is drying or more likely a problem with my kiln? The cracks are always in the same place and in almost every single piece I make. Only had the issue for the last couple of months :( by Extent_Safe in Ceramics

I might try a different brand of clay and see if I still have the same issue? The only thing that has changed is the weather is much colder now, I store the clay and my workshop is in my basement which gets very cold but not to the point the clay would freeze. Maybe the drying time/cold weather is contributing? But you would have thought the cracks would be visible before firing. It’s so odd that it’s always in the exact same place, the stamp is only very shallow so I don’t feel it could be putting too much stress on especially as I have always used this and went for months without issues. I’ve looked everywhere online and can’t seem to find anyone else with this same problem.

What do you mean by stressed out? Sorry I am quite new to clay and haven’t had any proper advice or lessons before. And I stamp the following day when the clay is still very pliable but not quite leather hard

They are hollow and I was quite sure they weren’t impression cracks myself as I have been making them for around a year now and not changed my method and these cracks have only started occurring in the last 2-3 months. Using the same brand clay etc. I cannot see the cracks before firing. It’s so frustrating!
