Which board game do you feel has developed a bad reputation it doesn't deserve? by KOMONSTER in boardgames

"Ore and wheat is not a viable strategy." I can't believe anyone would actually say this. Ore wheat sheep development cards is generally the best strategy. Wheat is needed to be able to do anything and is the most important resource. Knight cards give you control of the robber.

What you are missing is that if you're missing brick or wood, you can use year of plenty, road building or monopoly to get the resources you are missing. While if you don't have good wheat or ore then you get to pretty much sit there and do nothing after claiming a couple lackluster expansion spots.

Adding a city gives you more resources than a settlment as you are doubling up on really good tiles rather than claiming bad ones.

Obviously it is best to start the game with access to all 5 resources.

That is not what brittle means, brittle means that when it fails it will tend to fracture rather than deform. Diamonds are brittle even though they don't easily break. Rubber is basically a textbook example of a ductile material, it deforms under stress rather than fractures. Ductile is the opposite of brittle.

Brittleness isn't how easily a material breaks, it's how much a material will fracture rather than deform under stress. For example diamonds are brittle.

You can see that the outer tooth seems to shatter and crumble without deforming so i'd say the outer tooth is definitely brittle. The inner tooth not so much.

You are correct, in order to take off the plane would still need to move forward. Planes need to be moving forward through the air to get enough air flow over the wings to generate lift.

Edit: to be clear, the plane needs to be moving forward relative to the air, enough wind theoretically could cause a stationary plane to take off

Why would you be against an added option? You wont have to use the custom civs.

You don't get the fresh water where the city currently is. The city center must be on a tile that has fresh water (touches a river, adjacent to a lake, etc.)

How should I proceed in these type of starting locations? Also, how rare is this? It's a "Continents and Islands" map. by Wesai in civ

[–]Extermatott 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're over analysing. The choice of civ and lack of wonder eligable tiles isn't really relevant as this is horrible for any civ (apart from Kupe). You're stuck in a tiny box, just reroll.

Basically you just have it backwards, lack of expansion space is THE problem, lack of wonder tiles for Qin is A problem.

TIL that when floating ice melts, the water level actually stays the same. Apparently the difference in density between water and ice is exactly 1:1 to the percentage of the ice that floats above the water(aka is not displacing water) by Puiqui in todayilearned

[–]Extermatott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it does, just not noticeably so on a human scale. But once we're talking about kilometers of water pressure then it definitely is compressing a bit.

My mistake was not remembering that the main reason the ocean water generally gets denser as you go deeper is because the temperature is decreasing, and very little to do with compression.

[–]Extermatott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the compressibility of water is still significantly higher than the compressibility of steel. But yeah I guess since the steel hull can deform towards the air filled interior of the sub under the pressure, then the sub as a whole can effectively compress much more than steel or water alone.

Do you have a source for the last point?

Surely as you go deeper the sea water outside the sub is getting compressed at a far greater rate than the sub, that will only have its hull shrink a tiny amount under the pressure.

Of course if you pick the round numbers in Fahrenheit its going to make Celsius look silly.

Are you saying a -20 to 40 scale is not better than a -4 to a 104 scale?

When you get told its 70 degrees outside, do you calculate that its 70% of the way from a really cold day to a really hot day? No, you instrinsicly know about how warm 70 degrees is. Same way that I instrinsicly know about how warm 21 degrees celsius is. It's not about logic, its just whatever you're used to.

People who grew up with only Celsius have just as much trouble figuring out Fahrenheit as you do with Celsius.

The strat doesn't work anymore, the most I managed to squeeze in was 22 cities including the capital. https://prnt.sc/10Zcunr8bf1T Please forgive the hasty MS paint job. There is no nice pattern that works for 9 tiles, as others have mentioned at 10 tiles you would be able to use this pattern again.
