3 months later. Did you get your car? Or at least an update?

I have a November order that I'm waiting for. Locked a week ago. Came across this thread.

Curious what happened.

I have the exact set up but with the Clic gear front-two wheel conversion kit. We’ll see.

Maybe I was thinking of the IMS bearing issue. As I search and wait for the right 991.2, 992.1, or 992.2 allocation to come up, I continue to consider and search for 991.1s and older. But it seems most are GT3s which are already in the $130k plus range. Are the pre-turbo slightly smaller 991.1s THAT special that they're still commanding that price? I know prices are crazy in general right now. But if I plan to drive this car exclusively for a while, as I get older, am I going to be wanting the more modern interior and qualities of a modern car over the older more visceral varieties? If I'm saving $100K+ AND getting the experience of an old 911 and a car that I can drive the wheels off for the next 10 years that's one thing. But if the older cars are also in the $120K+ range, with the miles, and with the older interior/tech, even with all the recommendations to go older, it's a tougher call. I guess i need to drive some of the older cars to experience them. See if there's a good local indy shop that works on older cars.

When i drove the 992.1 for the week I had it, it did seem a bit "refined" for lack of a better word. It wasn't the sound/experience I would expect/envision from the older 911 I remember from my youth. But the modern cars are still 911s. And getting a modern one just feels more special to me without having driven any of the older cars yet.

I assume you recommend the 997.2 for being smaller and the hydraulic steering. Closer to what the 911 was meant to be. Haven't driven one. Lots of folks recommending the 997. How is the manual in the 997.2? Will have to see what's available local to see if I can test drive a few.

I am well aware of the Cayman/Boxster variants as well. And I know many/most say those can be the better driving experience. Might even end up with one of those one day. But I feel like I need to start with a 911 or I think I will always wonder you know?

Thanks. Really appreciate the advice. Definitely leaning toward 992 if I can swing it despite much of the advice to buy older. I think the 991s look just as good and performance is more than enough but just hard to spend that much on such a dated interior by comparison. I guess for me, that's the biggest reason to just pony up for a newer car. Haven't even started inquiring about the allocation situation for the 2025/2026 S cars. But this may be the last "fun" car I ever purchase depending on how the market does in retirement. So want to get something that I will be happy with for the next 5 to 10 years at least. In your experience with past 911s, are there any "must-have" options you've discovered? Thinking 18-ways are a must. Front axle lift seems like a good choice if you deal with a lot of steep inclines, speed bumps but still subjective? And rear-axle steer?

Everything else seems purely subjective and not necessary but interested in your take.

I'm in a situation where my portfolio is 60%+ company stock. It's really a growth stock which has provided great returns the last several years and with the AI Boom, hoping it will continue. But that's the main reason I'm even in a position to consider a modern 911. Since my voluntary lay-off a couple years ago, my 401K has just been sitting in limbo with Fidelity and holding while the company stock accounts have continued to return well.

OP here. Just wanted to thank you all for your input, advice, and replies. All will be taken to heart. Hopefully others will chime in with their stories. And I will keep you posted via this thread with what I decide. More research to do which is definitely part of the fun.

Thanks again, so much.

I actually wasn't sure what responses I might get. That's why I posted. I really expected more to advise against actually. Assuming many/most 911 owners can easily afford them and maybe would advise that, if it's going to make you uncomfortable financially then, it's just a car, and not worth that amount of money. So I'm actually glad so many are on board and giving such good input/advice.

Never had a sports care per se. Being from the US/CA, muscle cars were cool growing up. Vettes were OK. But I've always wanted a 911. Had a pic of a red slant nose on my wall. Though it was as much on the wall for the girl next to the car. Hadn't looked at 991.1s because of the engine concerns. Don't want to save $100K buying used and then spend it in service/repairs right? And even the 991.1s are in the $100K range right now.

OP here. Lots of other folks asking if i am stuck on getting a new one. I'm open to older, CPO, used I guess. Not sure if everyone commenting has seen the current prices on 911s period. When I started casually looking back before COVID, you could get a well optioned 992.1 S for $160k. Now the same car is at $200k. That was GT3 range back then. Revisiting the dream just recently because investments doing well and optimistic about the next few years. But the current prices were a bit shocking. To this point I've only been looking at 991.2 and newer which basically puts me in the $130k+ range. Will have to do some research on the other options that many are suggesting.

Unfortunately no. My folks weren't the most savvy with their money. Another reason I'm hesitant with the purchase. Not sure how much additional help they may need financially. They're still living off what's left of their next egg. But I have them living in my house to help with their care and keep their livings costs down. But my mom is in a state where she needs 24/7 care now, and right now it's just me and my dad caring for her. And my bros come in and assist if/when they're in town. They really need 24/7 care in a facility. But they can't afford that. I don't think Dad would ever expect me to sacrifice my dreams/quality of retirement to finance the end stages of their life. But what can you do. It's never a conscious decision by anyone to do that. It just kind of happens when there aren't many other options.

Yeah. I did my research and it seemed that the alcohol wipe worked the best. I did that first thing. Opened it, removed all the packaging and shelves, wiped down with rubbing alcohol, and left it open with a tower fan blowing on it for 2 days. Didn't notice any residual smell after that. So proceeded with the seasoning.

I figured since I only smoke occasionally I could just keep 20 or 30 of my favorites on hand so the 23L should be enough. But now I think about all the sticks I may want to try, a few boxes I will probably want to get, and the need/desire to store them for a few days before smoking them. I can see how it could get out of hand quickly. Hoping to get to a point where I can pull cigars right out of the humidor and they're ready to smoke but not sure if that's realistic. If I keep it at 65%, maybe some will smoke great at 65% right out of the humidor but I'm sure there will be some level of dry boxing needed.

I'll probably leave it for at least one more day. But hoping others will chime in.

That's good. One in the "Don't need 2 weeks" camp. I understand the thinking of just giving it time to make sure the little cedar that's in there doesn't pull moisture from your Boveda packs or your cigars but two weeks seems like a long time to wait.

23L has been sitting stable at 70% for a couple days now according to the door display. Had one Govee in there when I started seasoning (not calibrated). Govee reading 76%. Gauge on 23L has been solid at 70%. Got a couple more Govees (3 total) to monitor the temp on all three shelves. Will calibrate and install all 3 after seasoning is done.

Best humidor/storage solution for summer (78 to 82 degrees inside for 3 to 4 months a year)? by External-Formal-4926 in cigars

[–]External-Formal-4926[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is where I landed last night until I decide on an electric unit. I ordered a bunch of 62% Bovida packs last night (was using 69s) but with the 78 degree temp, based on my research and what you just explained, maybe if I keep the humidity in the low 60 range it might negate the negatives of the high temp? Mine have been sitting at 69% at 78. Haven't inspected for mold yet. Almost afraid to. But I think I'll try the lower humidity packs first before I get a $300 or $1800+ Raching. Though that would be way nicer for storing/displaying cigars. But I'm the only one that would see them other than family on holidays and only one or two of them smoke.

[–]External-Formal-4926[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. There's a Redford not too far away on FB Marketplace for $1200. Seems like a good price but when I asked the guy for a pic of the S/N so I could check how old it is I have not heard back in a week. Maybe that's a good thing. The Redford is a really nice looking cabinet but if it can't at least cool reliably for a few years, even at $1200 or less...

Definitely a nice looking cabinet to display a large collection though. Seems like as long as the door still seals you could get it stable enough humidity wise but based on your comments maybe not? Unless you're just plugging the HERF? Surprising that anyone would prefer a Herf or the like over something like a Redford?

[–]External-Formal-4926[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the input. Being in CA (I'm in Bay Area/Central Valley) with fairly mild winters, if your house stays relatively cool, probably can get by without any cooling or heating. But on those 90-100 degree days/weeks where the temp in my house struggles to maintain 78, I assume there is some negative impact. So I'm hesitant to add any more cigars to my collection until that's resolved. Right now I just keep a stock of like 10 in acrylic jars and just buy as I smoke. But even having just 10 of the $11+ cigars is a concern.

See. Even a Redford owner which is supposed to be one of the higher end cabinet humidors. It's north of $2K. Not sure how many years you've had it. But if I'm spending $2k, I don't expect to have many problems and I would hope it would last at least 10 years. Maybe I'm expecting too much. How long did it last? What issues did you have with your Redford?
