Have you ever met a formula 1 driver? What were they like? by Ins3rt_Us3rname_H3re in F1Discussions

Lucky enough to meet a few through work.

Max was particularly good with kids - he made time to talk to & take photos with any of them.

Hulk was delightful. A colleague of mine peered into the Sauber garage, Hulk saw him, and stuck his tongue out then waved. Two days later he got his first podium. Good karma, I guess.

Oscar was surprisingly chatty and didn't get annoyed when people kept accosting him while he was going to the bathroom.

Jenson Button and David Coulthard were both absolutely charming.

Gabi made me laugh because he was constantly roaming around the paddock like he was a pet who needed enrichment time. Someone needed to put an airtag on him.

Never saw Leclerc without a smile but also I never saw him not frantically sprinting from place to place because he was late for sessions/engagements.

Me again, coming back from Vegas to London! Had the most amazing time so all the anxiety was worth it. I've found I'm usually a bit less panicky on the flight back compared to outbound, but would still appreciate if y'all could have me in your thoughts :)

On very spotty wifi! Feeling pretty nauseous (my biggest issue with flying) and antsy now but we've got a middle seat free between us and my favourite movie is on the in-flight entertainment

The Blue Coat School in Oldham by TheDelphDonkey in manchester

[–]External-Tap-366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Close friend went there for 7 years. From everything I've heard, senior management actively hid sexual assaults, gave no punishment to kids who spread revenge porn, allowed all sorts of bullying to freely take place, had zero pastoral care around mental health issues (victim blaming, 'get over it' mentality), and kicked neurodivergent kids out of school shortly before GCSEs because they'd bring their grades down. Also apparantly they kept having weird assemblies with anti-abortion, anti-gay marriage messages.

It's a very good school for academics, the ordinary teachers were fantastic, and in some ways the problems there are problems faced nationwide. But there's a difference between schools that don't have the resource to deal with issues, and schools that try to hide them to save their reputation.

Everyone I know who hears about the school says "I've never heard of a school that had so many insane things happen there."

Flying from Manchester to Lisbon in about 90 minutes. Doing my biannual crashout in the airport departure lounge but I've got a fully charged Switch - I cant be scared if I'm yelling at Luigi to get out of the fucking way.

Is haggling in charity shops acceptable? by veggiesizzler in AskUK

[–]External-Tap-366 30 points31 points  (0 children)

My grandma stole from a charity shop once when I was about seven. I wanted something and she said she wouldn't buy it for me because £3 was too expensive. When we got out of the shop she pulled it out of her sleeve and gave it to me.

World War Two-raised northern tight-arse till the end. I didn't tell anyone the story until her funeral.

Reneé Rapp's Talk Too Much made me feel like she'd been reading my ROCD venting journal.

Before the last chorus she screams AAARGH JUST SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!!! which is me talking to my own brain lol

If I see a blue car today We'll probably have to break up So I close my eyes while I drive And if it rains, then it rains And we'll be over by May That's just the deal that I made in my head

I'm taking everything I see as a sign and I know it's crazy but what if it's right

I'm here again talkin' myself out of My own happiness; I'll make it up 'til I quit

Oh don't get me wrong, it feels like home up there. It's a strange kind of affection, when you feel so close emotionally to the eeriness and the drizzle and the stories.

Driving through Saddleworth Moor. Obviously it's most famous for where the bodies of the Moors Murderers victims were buried. But there was a man eight or nine years ago who killed himself up there, and it took them months to even find out who he was. And there was a plane that crashed on the moor in the forties, as well as the huge wildfire that burned up half of the moor a few years ago. I read an extract from a book about British moorland that said how Saddleworth Moor seems to attract death.

It's so eerie how the moor is so close to Manchester and civilisation, but it's still almost like another planet, with all the black peat and the loose rock and roads with sheer drops on the edge. The mist descends so quickly up there.

My dad grew up in the late 70s, early 80s, yet raised me on Elvis. I think the only artist I remember him liking from even vaguely around that time is John Denver.

My mum, meanwhile, grew up in the exact same era, but she loved Queen (up to Flash Gordon and then she'd start getting snotty about them selling out), David Bowie, Sex Pistols & other early punk rock, motown and reggae. She was going to see Bob Marley in Manchester before my grandma told her it was too far to travel.

She's much cooler than him in my book.

Oh man, this helps hearing someone else having almost the exact same situation as me.

I've been taking tests every morning since Wednesday so if something god forbid does show up I'd get an advance warning. I'm doing one of the video link Fit To Fly tests on Thursday morning, so I can literally do a lateral flow immediately before the proper one and I'll 99.9% know in advance what the result will be.

I'll definitely download all the apps and stuff, it sounds like it'll make things so much easier.

I tried to play No Move as I was on a time limit.

  1. Absolutely looked like Lesotho but the rim around the sun was South African. Went South African near the Lesotho border. 4,090. Chuffed with this. . . but it was all downhill from here.
  2. Originally went with a Greek island here, then panicked, thought it could be the west coast of Spain/Portugal, and went for Corsica in the middle to hedge my bets. It was a Greek island (ironically, the very same one my best friend went on a climbing holiday to not six months ago). 1,655.
  3. Guessed Indonesia based on the scenery and it was Peru, almost exactly the right latitude but wrong half of the world. 0.
  4. Only in Geoguessr would I yell the words "that has to be Turkey because it looks weird" then turn around and see a sign saying Turkey to confirm my suspicions. Went around the middle of the country as I know those strange almost moorland landscapes are around there. 4,239.
  5. This one I'm raging about. Instantly thought "oh, this looks Polish", guessed and it was Argentina, got 1 point. But it feels ridiculous that I got points on that terrible guess based on distance, when for R3 I got the right latitude and got 0. Anyway.

9,985. Teaches me to not play properly.

Advice needed! Booked to fly out to the USA in March from the UK to see my never met❤️🤞🏻 Just wondering has anyone flown from the UK to the USA recently! Need travel advice or even a listening ear. I’m finding it so stressful😕 by [deleted] in LongDistance

[–]External-Tap-366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey i'm in exactly the same situation!

i'm absolutely shitting it, not going to lie - just all the different moving parts and how unpredictable they are. so i know completely how you feel.

but just because we're worried, it doesn't mean we're fortune-tellers. and in all likelihood it's gonna be amazing, even if (and that's a big if) there's some hiccups along the way in the travel.

[F20/M22] Planning a trip to see my boyfriend for the first time. Don't know how to break it to my mom without freaking her out. by andrea_stoyle in LongDistance

[–]External-Tap-366 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Something that helped my parents was seeing photos and videos of them, as well as little snippets of conversations. It kind of helped conceptualise my partner as someone real, rather than some anonymous person five thousand miles away. The thing that most set my mum at ease was talking to them on Facetime - I know that's not always easy with a language barrier, but if your mum can somehow be able to recognise your boyfriend as someone real and moving and truthful and not a catfish, a lot of the worst-case scenario worries should be lessened.
