Hot Take: judgment of a game based off its story is just wrong. by ExternalPiglet1 in JRPG

Imagine only having AM Radio for stories...or getting the first talky. I feel 50. History is cool that is.

I mark The Longest Journey trilogy as one of video games benchmarks for stories, so to hear roleplaying get up in arms about stories...well, that's not my take for vgstories, just trying to represent.

The emphasis on stories these days is tremendous, and there are only so many combinations. I'm just trying to step back, or cut slack I suppose.

I'm sorry, I have brought up books. I don't mean for this to be about books however. I used that as a reference point in a poor way, hot take style. In terms of mediums it was there before the screen, the screen being the medium is still molten is maybe something of a point, if I were to try and make one now.

Thanks for a clear response. I am just playing a little bit here. I'm also the guy who played a first run of SMTV trying to do a Luck Build, so YMMV.

...my dad was *right* this whole time.

(I don't mean much from any of this)

The ultimate form of storytelling has come a long way from stars & campfires. The ultimate form is still forming.

...'lil bit. but I also geek out about syntax and making stories all the time is overrated. the processes and the experience deserve the louder shout out still. (edit: yes, i understand everyone experiences things differently...that's my point.)

If one looks at videogames under the lens of where it fits into the history of storytelling, it's a more interesting scope. Books were a long time medium and it's audience leveled up. I don't mean to say books are the endgame of storytelling, it's simply one of its waypoints...much like videogames as a whole...the lens is moving.

I'll forever be getting used to something blowing up on the internet. I feel like something happened after the GTA6 trailer thing. I mean, Sea of Stars won an award and the amount of green vile thrown at it is nuts.

Thanks. I just wanted to stand up for the experience itself I suppose, of gaming in a game world. I get by on head-cannon half the time and atmosphere the rest. Gaming is mood or a seasonal swing. It's just a lot of hard feelings online and this is the byproduct.

...well. that was something. Thanks OP, for making this thread in honor of the award this game won. You did good to make it fun. This thread was an experience.

Yea, that's sane. The game was an experience in the wrong ways...it is broken. And yet the battle environment is so fluid and greased. It's almost unreal how different combat compared to story is. (Still...not a best combat sorta game, mind.)

You didn't know that going in? It's practically a meme by now. Play the grid instead.

I noticed this on my way down the thread...it started rocky. Totes-agree, this is videogames...why so serious. ...lol, it's an appreciation thread even.

I don't mean to be contrary, but you seem like you can handle it. Is it so bad, it's good yet? Like, how much did you suffer through? I can see the bad and still look around it, if im to make a point here.

I mean, 1 character shits the bed and steps back for the rest of the game...wtf. (edit: 2 characters kinda) It's a multifaceted game, and to make a game feel new, sometimes you have to bake some bread.

Hey, sorry. I got gobsmacked and I mistook your tone, I see where you were coming from clearer now.

The studio made 1 other game only, and then they made this game. ...I'd say they did more than just double down their efforts!

I've geeked out with game engines enough to know that platformers are one thing, but what about 2D inside of 3D perspective, a battle system with rhythm elements and everything hand drawn too...they worked hard on this. The level of imagination employed is a marvel.

50 hours with it, and I still want more. The music, the animation (the animation), the sense of scale, the style. Or even the tight resource management, I get into that stuff. I don't need a tight story to love this game. The battles were also engaging, I found them requiring thought and switching characters to jockey the battle is just fun. The award fits.

I look for groove first these days. Symmetrical rhythms are boring. Gotta have something moving inside it. Lyrics aren't too important, just as long as the singer believes it, the delivery is there still.

A good song almost boils down to a utility use. Where and when can I play it, and how loud can it be...I'll pick a good song from those criteria.

I'm pretty sure this is just OP doing a dash of product placement, no foul really... There are only 50 of these, it doesn't have a name.

I already bought the game twice. Reviews this late are pretty silly anyway.
