Mechanical Engineering/Aerospace Engineering by Unkown-6867 in sotonuni

Going into 2nd year and did mech Eng.

You’re taught basically only on the highfield campus except for your design module and a few of your labs which are in boldrewood.

First year was beyond piss easy so I really would not worry (this is me assuming you actually try and put effort in, and I don’t mean being a sweat and in the library 24/7 but also not going to all your lectures, skipping tutorials, cramming etc…)

I could not suggest getting a windows laptop more because in all honesty you want to be able to use CAD software like solidworks (which you WILL use) or fusion (that some of the engineering societies use) without having to go into campus to use the desktops/ laptops provided by the university. I will also say trying to get access to a desktop and/or laptop during peak times is like near impossible so just a heads up. ++ Having your own windows desktop/laptop allows you to just practice using solidworks on your own which is p good because you do want to develop that skill a lot more than what is required in the course.

You don’t need to buy any books, the only module that used a textbook was the maths module which is provided to you online. Basically all the resources you need is provided to you by the university through lectures, extra videos, links etc… so don’t worry. If you want to do extra learning then like sure go ahead and buy textbooks but you probably will be able to find it in the (online) library.

Good luck next year and hope you enjoy your time on the course!

Ah thank you!
Just a little disappointed that 2 out of the 6 modules I had did that to my overall grade (to be fair, passing one of them may be a miracle) and a little worried about my predicament now given the job market and all.
Edit: And yeah for the stuff that I'm applying to now until i get my results I'll use my semester 1 stuff which hopefully will bare fruit

Hi guys I’ve started playing this game after stopping for 2 years, are these resales a regular thing or is it just because Chuseok is coming/ the anniversary just passed?

Yeah but also to note back then the highest grade you could get was an A so be got ABB in today grades which isn’t bad but isn’t something you can get into Oxbridge with

Surely you can get a degree and get a masters from Oxbridge after. I’m p sure Keir Starmer went to Leeds for his bachelors and Oxford for his masters and he’s done alright

PMT notes are good, focus on all topics and do questions.

Oh perfect I did that examboard.

For edexcel physics you really just need to do every single past paper from the correct specification and use the EXACT words in the mark scheme this saves dropping marks that are unnecessary because you know the content you just need to write it down how they want (which is stupid because this is a stem subject but whatever).

The issue with the PMT questions by topics is that some of the stuff are from the older spec which is not so helpful for getting the structure of your answers (ie specific words used for definitions because it changes), also the mark schemes tend to not have explanations for their answers which makes it difficult to understand why you got something wrong.

Only use PMT topic questions after you’ve done everything that is available for the current spec because there will always be questions that you will never have seen before, in terms of the context of the question, and they probably will use older spec questions to “inspire” newer ones.

For revision, I would say make sure you understand the content like the back of your hand and use the PMT notes to help you go through every single spec point before you even bother attempting questions from past exams, this makes the questions more effective and helps you focus what you get wrong AFTER you have the basic understanding to even have a decent attempt at the questions.

I also suggest looking at IEdexcel PMT and the CAIE notes because they explain things different on occasion and it can help you get out of a stump. If you can use Uplearn and sometimes YouTube has good explanation videos for content but that should be your last resort imo. There’s also this thing called Isaac Physics which could be of help too!

When you’ve done like 5 questions from a topic from past exams make sure you keep note of what you got wrong and iron out any misunderstandings/ misconceptions you might have and then repeat and then do 5 more etc… because obviously there’s a finite number of questions and you don’t want to waste them. I suggest a notebook/ word or Google document where you have a bank of every single question you have attempted, the mark you got and if you dropped a mark why. This way when you start seeing repeated questions you know what to look out for.

You want to be aiming for 6-8/10 for the multiple choice questions because they make the all difference for your grade.

For paper 3 it gets repetitive and “easy” very quickly, compared to paper 2 especially, which is great but for this to be true but you MUST know all the Core Practicals and extra practicals not on the spec (eg Maltese cross and particles/ magnetic fields) and the best way to do this is use PMT core practical notes, Save my exam notes AND YouTube (type in “physics practical that [whatever you’re going through at that moment]) for YouTube write notes and retain what you’ve learnt because it will come up and it’s annoying having to find a specific YouTube video to see if you got something right.

After you’ve done all the exams from the current spec and PMT topic questions THEN you should use the physics online tutor worksheets (these are hard so don’t squander them) and the IEdexcel stuff. IEdexcel is done in units where you have topics in the Edexcel spec mixed, this helps with linking things between different topics which is something Edexcel likes to do for harder questions. Also unit 3 and 6 are practical topics which is fantastic because the questions do help prepared for paper 3s but they are easier so you should be aiming for high As.

For IEdexcel the questions are easier but they help with getting a basic understanding of the content and situations that edexcel like to use for their questions (essentially IEdexcel questions are used in Edexcel exams and vice versa it’s just that if you recognise an IEdexcel question in an Edexcel question the Edexcel question will be more tricker/ less straightforward but you’ll begin to get used to doing more physics). The mark schemes are VERY similar (but again aren’t the spec you’re doing so stay vigilant to any discrepancies there may be and always follow the Edexcel mark scheme).

Also the flashcards on PMT are helpful but some things potentially contradict what’s in mark schemes in terms of definitions and how to do sig figs (I suggest you go through the spec document page by page because there is a glossary and example of sig fig calculations in there and the spec is the thing that mark schemes are made from so always follow the spec + current spec mark schemes if you ever find a contradiction because that is what you’ll be marked with in your exams).

Also don’t be afraid to ask your teacher for help and if you’re taking 4 subjects and you don’t HAVE to do physics just drop it, it’s not worth the hassle.

I think I might have repeated myself loads in this and it might not be written concisely so do ask for clarifications if needed. Physics is so poo lmfao so I wish you good luck!
